Chapter 70

These creatures, emitting a blue glow, were spread like threads across the sandy seabed. Although their light was not bright enough to fully illuminate the area, it was sufficient to light up this dark sea.

What are these? Some resemble plants, but Lin had never seen plants that could emit light. While self-illumination and self-absorption could more efficiently utilize energy, there would still be some loss, and it would be impossible to maintain a perfect energy cycle.

Leviathan once had such a system, but it had degenerated after a hundred million years.

Regardless of what they were, using their light, perhaps she could create a green carpet here...

However, she first needed to deal with the current trouble.

Leviathan swam quickly through the seabed covered with glowing threads, following the ammonite cluster. The massive fish continued to follow closely behind. Suddenly, a few ammonites slowed down and fell behind Leviathan.

Lin did not turn her eyes to look, but she could clearly feel the peculiar water vibrations when the ammonites were crushed by the Dunkleosteus.

The Dunkleosteus did not slow down at all. It was not satisfied with just a few small ammonites. The ammonites seemed to be slowing down, and a few more fell behind, being crushed into pieces by the Dunkleosteus.

The Dunkleosteus could not catch up to the ammonites in speed, but it seemed the ammonites lacked endurance. 'Fatigue' was caused by the inability of cells to promptly expel waste and supply nutrients, and to repair the damage caused by intense activity. In terms of endurance, Leviathan had evolved to be the most perfect. As long as it had stored nutrients, it would never run out of energy.

The ammonite cluster began to disintegrate due to lack of stamina. Almost half of the ammonites were swimming slower. At this moment, a two-meter-diameter giant ammonite suddenly turned around, opened its shell, and extended dozens of tentacles, seemingly preparing to face the approaching Dunkleosteus head-on.

Would an ammonite really make such a move?

The Dunkleosteus did not care whether the ammonite was large or small. It charged forward, opening its powerful jaws and biting into the ammonite's hard shell.

The shell, as hard as stone, instantly developed large cracks. The ammonite's numerous tentacles wrapped around the Dunkleosteus's head, primarily attacking the gills.

The Dunkleosteus's gills closed. It had a way to defend its weak points, while the ammonite's goal was to pry open the gills and destroy the oxygen-absorbing structures inside.

This seemed to be a prolonged battle, but under the pressure of the Dunkleosteus's jaws, the cracks on the ammonite's body spread like a web. Although the ammonite's head was not exposed, only the tentacles were attacking, the pressure seemed to be causing significant damage to the internal organs, and the tentacles gripping the gills were losing their strength.

Two meters against seven meters, it had tried its best, but it was still not enough?

The Dunkleosteus's jaws had evolved specifically to deal with hard-bodied creatures like ammonites. It could be described as a 'natural enemy.'

The smaller ammonites had long since fled. Even if this giant ammonite failed, it had bought time for its fellow ammonites to survive.

Leviathan watched the struggle from a distance, as the Dunkleosteus could not catch up to it, so Lin had nothing to worry about.

The Dunkleosteus eventually shattered the ammonite's shell. Most creatures would not eat the shell, but the Dunkleosteus crushed and swallowed both the flesh and the shell.

Watching the Dunkleosteus continuously eating the ammonite, Lin suddenly had an idea.

Attack it and see, after all, it is the largest creature we've encountered so far, and defeating it would be quite interesting.

Is it just for fun? There must be another purpose...

Indeed, if Lin wanted to create a green carpet here, she needed to first determine the extent of the glowing threads in this area.

Without further ado, Lin searched for some useful units within Leviathan. She found that throughout its history, Leviathan rarely attacked creatures larger than itself, as there was no need. Even half its size could sustain it for a long time, so Leviathan only had some units for driving away, not for directly attacking large creatures.

Although evolution was excellent, it sometimes lacked diversity and did not reach perfection.

Thinking this, Lin directly created over a dozen Crushers and sent them to attack the Dunkleosteus's skin.

Like other large creatures, the Dunkleosteus initially ignored the Crushers. It only reacted when the Crushers began attacking its skin.

The Dunkleosteus suddenly twisted its body, and the water currents generated by its massive size instantly swept several Crushers far away, rolling them for several turns before they stopped. Some even collided with the glowing threads on the seabed.

The Dunkleosteus turned its head, trying to find what was attacking it, but its vision seemed unable to clearly see the small Crushers in the dimly lit seabed. It did not connect the attack with the distant Leviathan, so it turned back to continue eating the remaining ammonite.

Conventional tactics don't work on such a large creature, do they? Should I use the Carnivores? However, for some reason, Lin did not like using poison or similar tactics; she preferred to directly destroy the enemy.

Lin first had Leviathan retrieve the Crushers.

Suddenly, Lin felt a strange sensation. Some Crushers returned, but others were unable to move, as if they were entangled by something.

Lin sent an eye to observe the Crushers and found that they were wrapped in the glowing threads. These threads continued to grow on the Crushers' bodies, eventually forming a glowing ball that completely enveloped them.

The Crushers did not have eyes, but Lin could feel that they were being corroded by a dissolving liquid, starting from the outer skin, with cells being killed one by one until the entire body was destroyed.

These strange glowing threads have such abilities?

Lin felt puzzled. Just as she was about to have Leviathan approach to investigate, a strong water current suddenly came from nearby.

Leviathan immediately retreated at high speed. In the next moment, the Dunkleosteus's jaws snapped shut where Leviathan had been.

It almost got cut in half...

At this moment, the Dunkleosteus turned and bit again, but it had lost the element of surprise. Lin made Leviathan swim over ten meters away at a faster speed, and only then did she relax and observe what was happening.

The ammonite had been half-eaten by the Dunkleosteus, and the remaining half fell onto the glowing threads on the seabed, being completely enveloped by them. The Dunkleosteus seemed to know the danger of the threads and abandoned the ammonite, instead attacking Leviathan.

Although it moved slowly, the Dunkleosteus's ambush ability was truly strong. Lin only noticed the abnormal water currents when it was close, and there was no smell at all. She did not know how it managed to get rid of the smell of the ammonite's internal organs, but perhaps the smell had spread too much in the water, and she did not notice it.

Now, the Dunkleosteus seemed to realize it could not catch up to Leviathan. It had already eaten enough, so it gave up the attack and swam away.

Lin usually did not let go of creatures that attacked her, but killing the Dunkleosteus here would mean its body would be quickly enveloped and decomposed by the glowing threads on the seabed, making it meaningless.

Compared to killing a monster that could bite Leviathan in half, studying these threads was more interesting.

Lin created a small unit with a sharp, small pincer at the front and had it cut a small segment of the thread. She then used a spherical unit called a 'Research Sphere' to suck it into its body and released a large number of cells and micro-units to study it.

These threads... their structure was quite simple, with a layer of glowing cells as the outer layer and some muscle-like cells inside that allowed them to move.

Additionally, they could extend fine, needle-like threads from their surface, which could release a powerful dissolving liquid. This dissolving liquid had a decomposition ability that surpassed any other dissolving liquid Lin had seen. They probably used these small needles to pierce into other creatures and decompose their organs from the inside out.

These glowing threads probably fed on various debris. Due to the scarcity of food, they were so aggressive, immediately surrounding anything that fell.

However... in this place, the surface is covered with ice, and the seabed is dark and cold. Is there really enough food to allow these threads to cover such a large area?

If there is, perhaps Lin could mimic them to create a new green carpet... Yes, a green carpet does not necessarily have to feed on light; it mainly needs to collect a large amount of food in one place for a long time.

So... let's give it a try.
