Chapter 89

This is a wondrous place. Despite having seen many similar scenes in the sea, Lin couldn't help but marvel at it. Just like the coral reefs in the sea, the variety of life in the forest was rich beyond description. Lin was amazed that such a marvelous scene had also evolved on land.
The true destination of the worms should be here. Relying on the abundant food here, they were able to grow to enormous sizes. However, this was also thanks to the oxygen produced by plants. If the ultraviolet rays were still intense, no living things could survive on land.
In the forest, Leviathan strolled forward. Its feet were covered with a layer of green moss, which felt soft and spongy underfoot. With each step, some small arthropods would jump out, most of which could fly, using wings that looked very different from those of dragonflies.
Regarding flight, Lin still needed to study it thoroughly. If flight was impossible with wings alone, the floating jellyfish would be Leviathan's only option. Unfortunately, although the variety of life here was rich, Lin hadn't seen any floating jellyfish yet.
Moving around here, many small arthropods would fly onto Leviathan's body. They were probably parasites, with needle-like mouths trying to drill holes or find gaps in the carapace. However, they quickly became food for the small scorpions.
The small scorpions from the desert scorpion always stuck to Leviathan's back. Since they didn't do anything special, Lin didn't pay much attention to them.
Lin was now looking for a place to settle. With Leviathan's large size, most creatures would choose to avoid it, but Lin couldn't be sure what might appear at night. Lin didn't want to encounter a situation like the one in the forest of spires at night, so it had to find a safe place.
The air was filled with the sounds of living things, but there were other sounds mixed in.
The sound of flowing water.
Confirming the location of the water source was also important. Lin followed the direction of the water sound.
The deeper it went, the more peculiar the trees became. Unlike the trees at the edge of the forest, which grew by twining around each other, these trees grew in various shapes, like coral tentacles, standing upright, coiling, and forming nets. These plants seemed to grow in a completely random manner, and calling them 'twisted trees' was quite fitting.
After crossing a twisted tree trunk in front of it, Lin finally saw the source of the water sound.
It was a small river about two meters wide, flowing from deep within the forest and winding its way to the other side. Some small creatures were drinking from the river, and what caught Lin's attention the most were two millipedes over three meters long.
This river seems quite narrow, almost like a stream. Is this really the source of water for the forest? If possible, I should go downstream to see if it connects to the sea.
The sky was gradually darkening, and it was time to find a safe place.
Leviathan walked near the stream, and the small creatures around it ran away when they saw Leviathan approaching. However, the two millipedes not only didn't run but also raised their heads and hissed at Leviathan.
Wait... These aren't millipedes.
Lin noticed that these creatures looked like millipedes but had fewer legs and were much thicker and longer. Their bodies were also slightly wider, and they had another name: centipedes.
They were completely unafraid of the much larger Leviathan. They kept shaking their bodies and getting ready to charge, but Lin ignored them and slowly walked past them, crossing the river to the other side.
The centipedes stopped their aggressive posturing when Leviathan moved away and continued drinking water.
This place should be fine.
After reaching the other side of the river, Lin looked at the gradually darkening sky and the ground beneath its feet. This place was different from the original one; the moss wasn't covering the entire ground but was sparsely distributed. It was a suitable place to build a home. Although the moss here wasn't a type of insect, Lin still thought it should be careful and not dig it up carelessly.
Leviathan started digging in the mud with its tentacles and front limbs. It now had three pairs of arthropod legs, with the back two being larger and used for support, while the front pair was relatively slender and had more functions.
It didn't take long to dig a hiding hole. During this time, Lin noticed something peculiar: the small scorpions all climbed down from Leviathan's body and used their strong pincers to help dig the hole.
I didn't expect them to do this. It's quite interesting.
As the sky darkened, Lin quickly dug a hole large enough to accommodate Leviathan and some small scorpions. After backing into the hole, Leviathan used the suction cups on its tentacles to pull the surrounding soil over itself, burying itself.
This is the first time Lin has done this, and it feels quite good. Lin noticed that the small scorpions continued digging without stopping, but since it didn't know how to make them stop, it didn't interfere.
However, Lin still wanted to see what the forest was like at night, so it created three flying creatures with the ability to emit light and sent them out to explore in the darkness.
The flying creatures flew over the river, navigating between the massive branches. The forest was twisted and complex, blocking most of the daylight, but the ground was covered with moss. How did it absorb light?
As the sky darkened, Lin noticed that the moss seemed to emit a faint glow.
The flying creatures landed on the ground and used their front limbs to dig up a patch of moss. Lin discovered some fine powder on it, which was emitting the light. The darker the sky, the brighter the powder glowed.
Could it be...
As the night deepened, the ground around seemed to welcome the daylight, with all the moss emitting a bright white light. It was like a river of stars spreading through the dark forest, instantly illuminating the entire night.
It's as if the light source in the sky has been transferred to the ground. Although the light from the moss isn't as bright as daylight, it's enough to illuminate the entire forest.
This is truly wondrous... No wonder the twisted trees don't just grow straight up but also twist and coil in the forest. It's to receive the light from the ground, isn't it?
Lin was quite familiar with these glowing substances. It wasn't the light from the moss itself but... crystal fragments.
The flying creatures also had small mouths and could ingest the glowing powder for analysis. The composition of these crystals was the same as those in the sea, but their effects were completely different.
The crystals in the sea only glowed when they received light during the day and were dark at night, but the crystals here glowed at night and were invisible during the day.
Perhaps the moss uses some special method, or there are more secrets in the crystals that Lin hasn't discovered.
The crystals here probably absorb light during the day. Although the forest blocks direct sunlight, there is still enough light to illuminate the entire forest. These crystals seem to have the ability to store light...
If this can be utilized, Lin could create green carpets in various places, but it still didn't know where these crystals came from.
Lin had Leviathan dig in the surrounding soil with its tentacles and found a small amount of crystal fragments in the mud.
Perhaps the crystals are hidden deep underground? But Lin didn't need to dig specifically; it could just take them directly from the moss.
However, Lin needed to confirm that the moss wasn't grown by some Aztec-like insects.
In this glowing night, Lin noticed that many creatures seen during the day were still active. On the ground, some reptiles about two meters long were chewing on the glowing moss. Lin saw the centipedes again, hiding among the moss, waiting for a reptile to pass by before charging and piercing its neck with the tips of their front limbs. Another centipede then joined in the attack, and the other reptiles scattered but didn't run far, resuming their feeding on the moss.
It seems that the moss here isn't grown by any specific creature and can be freely consumed by others. The crystals, unable to be digested, are excreted and then reused by the regrowing moss. It doesn't seem that any strange creatures appear at night.
So, it's time for me to take action.
Although only a small part of the forest has been explored, Lin believes this can be determined as a new development site.
Lin will change its previous approach and no longer cover everything with a green carpet. Instead of sending Leviathan out to explore alone, it will create more armies to directly occupy the entire area.
