Ch2 - What's Wrong With Betas?
3 min read848 words
After the physical examination was completed, around a third of the applicants were eliminated. The beta didn’t expect that he would still be in the running.
He was slightly rejoicing in his heart, when an alpha behind him said, “My God, there’s a small beta here. You actually passed? Oh right, the standards for betas aren’t the same as those for alphas, hahahaha.” He didn’t even care to moderate his loud voice.
It was a red-haired alpha. He was particularly tall, almost a head taller than the beta. The beta clenched his fists, discomfort filling his chest, but he didn’t retort back. He only gritted his teeth and walked away.
His back appeared quite desolate and tragic, as if he knew that he had no way of beating alphas.
But in fact, he had only walked away due to his psychological shadow. “Alpha… QAQ!”
The remaining 700 or so people then began their written examination.
The beta carefully answered each question, though he didn’t believe this written exam to be of great importance. However, almost half of the remaining applicants were eliminated after the exam, much to his surprise.
Noticing that the beta was still there, the redhead raised his middle finger at him, eyes filled with condescension.
The beta didn’t pay him any mind but secretly returned the gesture with a scoff. He was just a bit stronger. His hair was just a bit red. What was the big deal?
The final round of assessment was 1v1 combat, best of three rounds. Those who win two rounds would pass.
The redhead bared his teeth at the beta. “You better hope our paths don’t cross!”
The beta continued to ignore him. Except inside, he felt aggrieved. Why was he being targeted just because he was a beta?
As the beta stood in the crowd, he drooped his head, looking somewhat lifeless.
To wrestle with alphas and what not… QAQ
Too many terrible memories!
The marshal, who was watching from the second floor, pointed at the small black-haired figure whose head was lowered. “That’s one beta. What about the other two betas you mentioned?”
Sweat dripped down the adjutant’s forehead. “This…”
The marshal shot him a cold glance. “Arrange them in one dormitory.”
The adjutant saluted. “Yes!” Then like a hoodlum who had been pardoned, he ran off, disappearing in an instant.
The marshal shifted his gaze back to the fighting grounds, an almost imperceptible smile hanging from his lips.
The redhead fought with such incredible ferocity that he knocked down two opponents in quick succession.
After he was randomly assigned an opponent for his third match, the redhead confidently walked into the fighting ring, shoulders not a bit tense. However, he was surprised to see the beta in front of him.
“This your first match?” the redhead asked, his voice uncertain.
The beta raised three fingers.
These alphas were so clumsy, far worse than his two brutal alpha brothers. Their punches were so slow and rigid, it was a piece of cake to dodge their attacks, then trip them once they became off-balance. Simply easy victories.
In his mind, the beta threw his hands up. This wasn’t so hard after all. Such clumsy people could actually also become soldiers?
He thought that all soldiers were as amazing as his dads and brothers.
The redhead obviously didn’t believe it. The beta didn’t bother convincing him otherwise, only getting into a fighting stance.
Seeing this, the redhead charged at him like an angry red yak.
For a moment, the beta froze in fear. However, he quickly got over it and got into the zone. He dodged twice, then thrice more, and then punched the raging red yak with all his strength, sending him out of the fighting ring…
Silence reigned over the fighting grounds for a few seconds before all the spectators burst into laughter, loud enough to shake a mountain.
His defeat angered the redhead, but he felt too humiliated to speak up. He simply got up and walked away.
Meanwhile, the gazes of all the alphas in the fighting grounds changed, now staring at the beta with amazement.
No one knew who initiated it, but after hearing someone clap, the alphas followed suit one after the other. Some even cheered, their eyes showing the sincerity of their actions.
One alpha yelled, “That was awesome! How did you learn to fight?”
The beta scratched his head, his face flushed. “I… I have two alpha brothers. They often team up to beat me…”
The alphas let out good-natured laughs. Then that same alpha said, “Your brothers must love you very much. They taught you how to protect yourself. ”
He felt slightly at a loss. Did loving a person mean making them your punching bag? QAQ
On the second floor, the marshal, who had initiated the applause, silently lowered his hands back to his sides. He chose not to reveal himself. Afterward, he sent a message to the adjutant. “Once the assessments are over, bring that beta to my office.”
The adjutant cleverly didn’t ask which of the “three betas.”
