Chapter 7: The Battle Horn Sounds (Part 3)

Ever since the training session last time with Ji Xiangkong in Dream Traveler, Qiu Ying basically opened up her Ren and Du meridians1 and her game commentary improved in leaps and bounds. Moreover, thanks to her extraordinary efforts, the popularity of her livestream room on Tanuki quickly rose to the top of the Conquer niche. Recently, her fortunes had been extremely good. Several professional commentators one after another followed her on Weibo, which also led to frequent private messages. It was like she was halfway into the doorway of the professional circle.

Among them, there was a commentator who said after the latest victory of VPG’s: “From the beginning, VPG was famous for its fiery aggression. But launching a siege refers to the entire team and not just one person. Thank you, Ji Xiangkong, for letting me see the previous VPG.”

Then, he suffered under a wild siege.

“What do you mean? Mocking Pei Xi? Who gave you the face?”

“Say it more clearly, where is Ji Xiangkong’s operating dazzling?! The champion team members have recovered their condition, what does it have to do with Ji Xiangkong’s ass!”

“Pei Xi makes up over 50% of Legend’s total attack stats every game, you know! What can you do to blacken this kind of player? I’m scared that your family’s beloved Xiangkong doesn’t even make up 20%!”

Qiu Ying reblogged the commentary on Weibo and added the words, “No matter how much debate there is, it’s only guesswork. Let winners and losers be decided by the one who emerges as the champion this year.”

In December, after persistent efforts, Qiu Ying was finally admitted into the gaming TV station STV as an intern Conquer commentator to live report on the site of the CPL playoffs. Only two people were admitted in the same group. When she learned that the other person was Qiao Xin, Qiu Ying felt like she’d just swallowed a fly. The upside was that during the competition, all of the commentators and staff would stay in the same hotel as the participating professional teams. Thinking that she would soon be able to frequently see Ji Xiangkong, Qiu Ying grew excited to the point of sleeplessness.

Unfortunately, the reality was very skeletal. Qiu Ying and Qiao Xin were arranged together as roommates. At night, considering she would have to breathe the same air as Qiao Xin, Qiu Ying wanted to go out and sleep on the street.

The night before the game, the professional players checked into the hotel one after another. As soon as Qiu Ying got off the bus, she saw Ji Xiangkong at the entrance. He was surrounded by a ring of female fans twittering with loud voices. As soon as she neared them, she could hear what they were saying.

“Kongkong, Qi Yue and Shen Yue are the Double-Moon Duo, Lu Sheng and Tong Wu are master and servant, are you lonely all by yourself at VPG?”

“Kongkong, who do you think is more handsome, you or Pei Xi?”

“Kongkong, would you date a fan?”

Qiu Ying felt chills up her arms; what Kongkong, like Wukong…2

She didn’t dare to listen to his answer to the last question, afraid that this guy would reply with, “I would, you aren’t bad.”

Qiu Ying bowed her head and hurried on. When she passed by Ji Xiangkong, he suddenly reached for her arm. Surprised, Qiu Ying turned her head to see him waving casually at his fans. “Sorry, I need to get interviewed now.” After speaking, he pulled her toward the hotel.

Qiu Ying blankly stared at him, looked at the group of dumbfounded female fans who were getting further and further away behind her. He actually pulled her away in front of everyone…

Hey! Who was interviewing who?

When they arrived at a corner without any people, Ji Xiangkong let go. He crossed his arms and blocked Qiu Ying’s path. Tilting his head, he smiled cloudily. “Commentator Qiu, are you so pretentious now that you ignore me to my face?”

Qiu Ying glared at him. “Aren’t you busy.”

“Pretty busy lately.” Ji Xiangkong’s posture eased and he said softly, “Wait until this busy period ends. I’ll take you out to eat some good food.”

Qiu Ying’s face instantly burned. She asked carefully, “Is it the benefit of being your number one fan?”

Ji Xiangkong froze for a moment, then reached up to mess with her bangs, making her close her eyes in surprise. “Yeah, you need to keep it a secret from everyone else.”

Up until he went to a meeting with his teammates and took the elevator up, Qiu Ying was still frozen in place, heart pounding.

The playoffs lasted for one week. The commentary of the first day went very smoothly. Although it was nervewracking to stand in front of several million viewers, Qiu Ying fortunately had plentiful stage experience in addition to being extremely well-prepared. In the commentator’s seat, she could speak easily in response to the game situation. Meanwhile, the superb-operating, “valkyrie streamer” of livestreaming, Qiao Xin, could only giggle on the sidelines, unable to add a single word.

In the evening, Qiu Ying took out some time to prepare materials for the next day, sitting in the room along while nibbling on some bread. Unexpectedly, the esports reporter Lu Yiyi suddenly ran into the room and slammed the door closed.

“I was just eating in the cafeteria near VPG. I accidentally dropped some coins, so I went under the table to pick them up, and then can you guess what I saw!” Lu Yiyi snorted with flashing eyes. “Qiao Ying was rubbing Qi Yue’s legs with her feet, my God! Pei Xi was just sitting next to them like normal! The two of them are so annoying!”

Qiu Ying almost choked out of fright. She slowly stuck out her thumb. “City folk really know how to play!”

“This is big news!” Lu Yiyi winked at her excitedly. “What do you say! Is it that Qi Yue poached, or did Qiao Xin wander off?”

“There’s no difference between the two, the unlucky one is still Pei Xi…”

While Qiu Ying didn’t like Pei Xi, he was the first person she had met who was certain of Ji Xiangkong’s strength, and he’d also gone to the trouble to explain to Ji Xiangkong that he was not the culprit in kicking him out… anyway, whatever she said, he could be considered an ally.

She struggled to swallow her bread. “Slow down first, let’s wait for the competition to finish to discuss it again.”

If this news overwhelmed tomorrow, she was afraid it would influence Pei Xi’s mood in the competition.

“Then what should we do if he finds out early?” Lu Yiyi seemed to understand something and narrowed her eyes ambiguously. “Could it be that you…”

Seeing her gossip radar point to herself, Qiu Ying was too lazy to explain the details and immediately changed the topic. “I’ll look for a good time to skirt around it with him.”

Lu Yiyi glanced vigilantly at the door. “How do you plan to tell him? ‘You should pay attention to Qiao Xin and your old teammate’s current whereabouts?’”

“For example, saying…” Qiu Ying thought for a moment and seriously said, “I recommend that he pay attention to whether the color of the water when he washes his hair has turned green?”

“…”

The assignments in the next day’s competition weren’t heavy. After VPG’s team members finished eating dinner, they went to the lounge to play pool. Ji Xiangkong was going back to his room to get something, but while he was taking a shortcut to the elevator, he heard a small peal.

“Qiu Ying was recruited by STV, so her background must be very strong.”

Hearing Qiu Ying’s name, Ji Xiangkong halted. He followed the voice and discovered that Qiao Xin was gossiping with a group of people.

“I still don’t understand her. She doesn’t have any real talent for studying, her game operating isn’t up to standard, and honestly, she’s just an idiot who’s selling her sex appeal. Since she didn’t dare to sing and dance because of being cursed that she was skirting the line, her ratings dropped. She deserved to get kicked out by Youxing!”

Remembering the numerous commentators who had praised Qiu Ying during the day, Qiao Xin clenched her jaw. “Her words on stage are empty and fake, or stolen, what’s so great about her!”

“Hello,” Ji Xiangkong interrupted her, folding his arms and casually leaning against the wall. “Tomorrow’s opponent Dragon has the newcomer Chaos. Chaos, as a support, uses some excellent heroes. Do you know which ones?”

In front of the spotlight of the audience, Qiao Xin hesitated. Her face mottled.

Ji Xiangkong smiled and lazily said, “You don’t know, yet you’re still so idle. You should use your time wisely to study.”

Unexpectedly, after he got his items and went downstairs again, he bumped into Qiao Xin again in the elevator.

“When you rejected me that time, I really thought you were a serious person. But now, you’ve been settled down by Qiu Ying.” In the cramped space, there were only the two of them. Qiao Xin snorted disdainfully. “Protecting her on Weibo, or spending money to delete her black posts, or giving her the celebration ticket, or even that she was able to go to Tanuki was all thanks to you.”

Ji Xiangkong shrugged neutrally. “Seems like you have quite a lot of spies.”

“She’s just using you, too. If she wasn’t able to seduce men, she would just be a tiny streamer. Before, what did she use to become a female master on Youxing? Be careful, she’ll dump you when she finds another backer. When that time comes, all your efforts will be wasted.”

Seeing that Ji Xiangkong was unmoved by her words, Qiao Xin was unwilling to give up and pressed close to him. Her right hand flirtily brushed his chest. “Where am I worse than Qiu Ying? Why won’t you even look at me?”

“The reason is very simple…” Ji Xiangkong raised the corner of his mouth, but his curved eyes were completely expressionless. He caught her wrist and coldly threw it aside.

“No man will waste time on a woman who isn’t interested in him.”

1 In traditional Chinese medicine, the Ren and Du meridians are Extraordinary Vessels of the overall meridian system that supposedly control all the Yin and Yang meridians of the body respectively. In Chinese wuxia books, this is a common term used to describe a rebirth and improvement in martial arts. Author really likes making wuxia references.
