Chapter 8: The Soul of the Team (Part 3)

“Ji Xiangkong got shot as part of the strategy!” Lu Yiyi exclaimed with a laugh.

Legend’s jungler, Huo Yao, had shot Ji Xiangkong with an arrow. As he was knocked out, Huo Yao moved to attack him, and from the bushes behind Ji Xiangkong suddenly rushed two of his teammates, reversing the kill.

It hadn’t even been a few minutes when Classmate Ji was shot again.

But this time Legend’s members hesitated, not daring to follow.

The audience who was watching the game from God’s perspective laughed: “But he’s alone this time…”

Qiu Ying couldn’t help but give a thumbs-up. “Great, just pretend like there are a hundred thousand troops behind you.”

After another few minutes, Xiao Xi slapped her leg. “Just when you think his abilities are all gone, he releases all of them. Did Ji Xiangkong graduate from Beijing Film?!”1

Qiu Ying waved her hand. “You just don’t watch enough of his games. His playing style is weird and always changes: in one moment, he’s a master of escape, slipping by faster than everyone; in another, he’ll fight fiercely against you. It’s impossible to guess how he’ll react before he moves.”

Lu Yiyi added, “Battlefield fraudster, that’s Void’s nickname.”

When the game reached the mid-late period, VPG went to “split push four/one”!

“Split push four/one” was when four people attacked one lane together, while the remaining person used a hero with a either teleporting or a full-map support ability and went to push the wave on their own. When a team battle broke out in the lane the four people were at, the solo hero could choose to support them or continue pushing. In this way, they were able to either destroy either the tower or the opponents.

This is pushing your wave of minions toward the tower in a certain lane.

Seeing that the person who left the team and went to the top lane alone was Ji Xiangkong, Qiu Ying’s heart suddenly jumped into her throat. In a “split push four/one,” the person who was alone could not be killed by the enemy, or else when they lost a person, it would be easy to annihilate the rest of the group! Moreover, he had to destroy the tower decisively and also quickly support his teammates — it was a sacrificial position!

Lu Yiyi took a breath. “VPG is really brave, letting the handicapped Ji Xiangkong do this kind of risky thing in a deciding match.”

On the commentary stage, Luo Tian appeared worried. “Void is going too far forward! It’s quite dangerous to move in his position.”

But Cris couldn’t help but laugh. “This guy is starting his performance again…”

Legend refused to give up the top lane tower, but no one predicted that the person going up to meet Ji Xiangkong would be Pei Xi!

Xiao Xi’s face was full of dissatisfaction: “Such a background character like Ji Xiangkong’s actually made Emperor Pei go out personally, excuse me?”

On the huge monitor, they could see Pei Xi get closer and closer to the top lane. Obviously, Ji Xiangkong had eyes, but he pretended not to see. Before he entered Pei Xi’s range, he suddenly and instantaneously ran away, his figure diving into the forest. Not to be underestimated, Pei Xi quickly chased after him.

Ji Xiangkong was equipped with mostly HP and defense support, such that he was basically a tank. Pei Xi destroyed 80% of his HP, but Ji Xiangkong escaped once more.

On Legend’s side, its team members signaled repeatedly for Pei Xi to return. Unfortunately, it was easy for players to become irrational when the game reached a stalemate.

Commentator Luo Tian analyzed the situation: “Void has been harassing Summit ever since the beginning of the round, so Summit’s obviously decided to kill him here.”

A scream suddenly erupted from the audience.

VPG’s other four players were fighting at the bottom lane!

Ji Xiangkong found a crafty and hidden corner and teleported to the teamfight at bot!

With bot now at 4v5, Legend, who didn’t have Summit, was completely overwhelmed and annihilated!

VPG seized the chance to take their tower and snatch the first round!

After a 15-minute intermission, the second round began.

Pei Xi was probably too annoyed by Ji Xiangkong’s aggravation in the last round, so this time, he grew braver. VPG’s jingler and support ambushed him at mid multiple times, but he actually killed them thrice. In the late game, he went alone to VPG’s nexus, weaving in and out to run rampant.

Xiao Xi’s face was full of pride. “He’s just using his actions to tell his opponents: ‘Get away from me! You’re not allowed to defend! Because I’m angry!’”

Forty-five minutes later, Legend regained a game!

In the third game, VPG targeted Legend’s lineup to win again.

In the fourth game, VPG chose a rare lineup of five long-range heroes; Luo Tian lamented, “Ji Xiangkong’s wild style is beginning again.”

Cris explained, “He wants to use the ‘aura,’ which will buff all of the players when they’re long range. It grants them stronger attacks, but the overall team will be very fragile.”

Before the game reached 20 minutes, all three of VPG’s towers collapsed.

Cris helplessly shook his head. “This strategy is really good, but it was just unfortunate that some of VPG’s members weren’t careful enough in their position.”

2 to 2. Both sides matched, they entered the tiebreaker round.

“VPG’s changing formation from ‘split push four/one into a ‘split push one/three/one’! It’s a multi-tower assault, and it’s not like Summit can make copies of himself!”

The tiebreaking game dragged on to the late stage. Both sides were evenly matched. Seizing the moment, VPG struck first.

“The soldiers on all three of VPG’s lanes are being attacked, Legend is nearing!”

“Legend’s top lane has been destroyed!”

“VPG is unstoppable! 0 to 4! Legend is left with Summit alone at their base!”

Xiao Xi squeezed Qiu Ying’s arm: “Pei Xi isn’t dead yet! Legend still has a chance!”

Inside the venue, the commentators’ voices surged with passion—

“Summit is so fierce, still defending to the last second! There are still 40 seconds left until his teammates resurrect!”

“VPG has destroyed Legend’s bottom tower!”

“Summit has killed Poker and Lion!”

“VPG isn’t retreating! They’re continuing to attack at mid!”

“Summit’s HP is low, but he still hasn’t given up! There are still 25 seconds left until his teammates resurrect!”

“Legend’s middle tower has been destroyed!”

“Oh my God! Summit’s destroyed another one! Right now, we’re at 1 to 2! The other members of Legend are about to resurrect!”

“Ahhhh! Summit god! Emperor Pei!” Xiao Xi’s eyes were red as she shook Qiu Ying’s arm in agitation. “Did you see? Did you see!”

Qiu Ying stared blankly at the monitor. The hero Pei Xi was operating had a “Bloodlust” passive skill. The lower his HP went, the stronger his attack was. If it kept getting lower, him solo-killing five other people wouldn’t be impossible.

If they were annihilated here, with the resurrection time being over a minute, Legend would take the opportunity to push forward and VPG would be sure to lose!

Amidst lightning and fire, as Legend’s top tower crumbled, Ji Xiangkong released his ultimate to keep Pei Xi in place. Just as everyone was thinking that VPG’s two people would do their best to kill Pei Xi, they turned around and assaulted the tower!

As soon as Pei Xi recovered from the stun, Qi Yue and Ji Xiangkong connected seamlessly to quickly put him under their control again.

“It’s a fight to the death! VPG is demolishing the tower!”

Qiu Ying took a deep breath. Facing an enemy who had only a sliver of HP left, yet Ji Xiangkong chose to control and not kill him. In such a hotblooded game, he was able to be so calm!

Legend’s ancient ruins fell under the precarious shadow of attack, and Legend’s fans throughout the entire venue anxiously shouted out the countdown until the other Legend players resurrected—

“5 — 4 — 3 — 2 —”

“Legend’s ADC is finally resurrected! And VPG has no ultimates left!”

Seeing the rest of Legend’s members emerge from the Wellspring one after another, Qiu Ying’s heart climbed up to her throat and she nearly forgot to breathe. The next second, a deafening scream arose. Legend’s base exploded!

“GG! Congratulations to VPG for becoming the champion of this Fall Season of CPL!”

Qiu Ying let out a long breath. Xiao Xi collapsed in the seat next to her, face ashen.

The large monitor broadcast the scene inside VPG’s glass room the moment before they won.

“Destroy it!”

“Destroy it!”

“Keep on destroying it!” Ji Xiangkong had one hand on the keyboard and the other on the mouse. His eyebrows were knit together as he ordered, “Destroy it! Don’t mind them!”

The moment the host declared the victory, VPG’s members leapt up from their seats and raised their fists above their heads in exhilaration. Shen Yue hugged Qi Yue in excitement, Lu Sheng slapped the table, and Tong Wu flipped his keyboard over!

Two years! The former world championship team, the team that had been unable to climb up to the top after losing its captain for two whole years, the team that couldn’t be saved even after pulling in “China’s number one mid,” had finally regained its former self!

Within the stadium, the roiling audience shouted as one—

“Yue! Poker! Scar! Lion! Void! V! P! G!”

“VPG! Strong! Invincible!”

At the commentator’s desk, Cris smiled as he said, “Did you pay attention? Within VPG’s five rounds of games, they never once chose the same heroes, and their strategies for all five rounds were completely different.”

Luo Tian realized something: “That’s… Legend’s playing style from last season!”

Cris silently nodded.

Although Conquer had over 100 heroes, as professional competitions progressed, most teams would all look to find a few combinations that worked best, or something similar to that. But there was one person who was different. His way of thinking was bold and imaginative, and he could implement all of the rarely-used, unpopular, ideas as core development tactics. In one year, with an endless stream of new lineups, new play styles that made everyone cry out, “Acrobatics!”, Legend had thus been given the label “smart.”

If a professional player went to a new team and the entire team’s style then transformed, then they were undoubtedly the soul of that team. With the current Legend, the soul of the team was Pei Xi. And VPG’s—

Cris looked up at five people holding up the trophy surrounded by flowers and applause on the stage.

Was Ji Xiangkong.
