### Chapter 4: A Passion for Acting

#### 12th "Young Acting Festival"

The largest-scale youth theater festival in the country, organized by the Department of Performing Arts and supported by the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Performance Production Association, took place. The previous winners of the festival have achieved great success in films, dramas, and theater, making it the ultimate gateway for aspiring young actors. It was also a matter of pride for the participating schools and academies.

The format was simple: participants had to perform a three-minute act of their choice on stage, allowing them to showcase their skills to the fullest. The venue was bustling with family and friends, reporters, and event staff. This year, a record 3,000 participants made it through the preliminary rounds, with 250 advancing to the finals. Casting managers from entertainment companies were also in attendance, as this was the best opportunity to discover genuine talent.

"This year is even more competitive than last year."

The casting team leader of Soul Entertainment, one of the top three agencies, was reviewing the list of participants with his subordinate.

"New faces will pour in like a fountain."

"Our company's ace, Cha Min-hyuk, won the grand prize at the 9th festival."

"Exactly. Look over there. FNT, Rose, S&A, Golden Kiwi, M&A Studio... The competition for talent will be intense. Stay sharp."

"Yes, Team Leader."

"Pay special attention to the participants from Seo Won High School."

"Understood."

Seo Won High School, a prestigious performing arts high school, had produced grand prize winners for three consecutive years: the 9th, 10th, and 11th festivals.

The backstage waiting room was chaotic with 250 participants and their mentors. The space was so crowded that people overflowed into the hallways. They practiced their lines repeatedly, determined not to miss a single word.

While other participants observed each other's lines and movements, Kim Do-han and I did stretching to release tension. A relaxed body allows for better breathing and more fluid expression.

"What should I do when I'm on stage?"

"Nothing but the breath in your sentences."

Mr. Min Sang-gi's smile widened.

"Remember, your voice, movements, and emotions are already in your head, body, and heart. Don't force them out or even be aware of them. Got it?"

"Yes, sir."

Mr. Min Sang-gi treated us more gently than usual. Then,

"Hello, senior."

A man pushed through the crowd and greeted Mr. Min Sang-gi. Another boy stood beside him.

'That face looks familiar... Ah, right. Kang Jung-woo!'

I immediately recognized the boy. He was Kang Jung-woo, who had starred with me in my debut film in my previous life.

'The film was a huge hit, and not just the lead actors but the supporting cast, including Kang Jung-woo, also gained fame. I'm meeting him here.'

"Hey, Park Jung-man? Long time no see."

Mr. Min Sang-gi recognized the man.

"I didn't expect to see you here, senior. What brings you here?"

"One of my students is participating in today's competition."

"Oh, so it's true. I heard you've been training students... Oh, right. Let me introduce you. This is Mr. Min Sang-gi, a legend in the theater world."

"Hello, I've heard a lot about you."

Kang Jung-woo bowed deeply to Mr. Min Sang-gi. His voice was solid and weighty.

Mr. Min Sang-gi introduced us to Mr. Park Jung-man.

"Hello."

I bowed to Mr. Park Jung-man. He looked at my face intently and asked my name.

"I'm Bae Woo-jin."

"Bae Woo-jin. You have a face that's a work of art."

"He's had plastic surgery."

Mr. Min Sang-gi's expression suddenly changed.

"Plastic surgery? On this face?"

"Yes. You'll see later."

'Let's see about that.' One corner of Mr. Park Jung-man's mouth curled up.

"Hey, Jung-woo. You need to be more nervous."

Mr. Park Jung-man spoke to Kang Jung-woo with a mocking tone. They both looked very relaxed, as if they had already won the grand prize.

As the announcement over the speakers began, the mentors left, and only the participants remained.

"Hello. I'll introduce myself properly. I'm Kang Jung-woo."

Kang Jung-woo confidently extended his hand for a handshake. His balanced physique and face exuded a sense of stability.

In my previous life, the supporting actors were chosen to complement my mediocre acting.

Seeing Kang Jung-woo brought back old memories.

"I'm Bae Woo-jin."

"You've been standing out. Your face glows from all sides."

An ambiguous compliment.

A strange tension filled the air.

"Thanks."

I didn't want to engage in a power struggle, so I ended it cleanly.

"Since you're Mr. Min Sang-gi's student, I have high expectations. Work hard."

"You too."

He seemed subtly annoyed.

His attitude was as if he was trying to teach me something.

His confidence that my acting was terrible was evident.

Coincidentally, the order of participation had him last and me right before him.

***

The backstage buzzed with the host's announcement. Some participants quickly took calming pills or deep breaths.

"Participant number 1, please come forward."

The competition began. The first participant walked to the center of the stage, illuminated by a bright orange light in the dark auditorium.

He took a deep breath and bowed.

"Hello, I'm number 1."

He took another deep breath,

"The kid, where are you going? You haven't even eaten the food I made. I'll send you later..."

His first sentence was muffled, likely due to his forced effort to speak loudly.

BEEP

The bell rang before a minute had passed. The bell signaled the end of the performance, indicating a lack of acting skills.

The first participant walked off the stage, collapsed to the floor, and burst into tears.

"Next participant, please come forward."

The second participant's bell rang quickly as well. He spoke words entirely different from the script, likely due to nervousness.

The order continued.

Next was Kim Do-han.

"Begin."

"I've already said I'm quitting the thieving!"

His voice was powerful, immediately capturing the audience's attention. The judges stopped their chatter and focused.

"I swear!... I keep my word. I've learned to read and write. From now on, I'll work... The old man wants to go to Siberia as a volunteer. What do you think... Are you coming with me? You think I like this life, but I don't. I know it well..."

He controlled his emotions, manipulating the stage with ease.

"I'll do it. I'll really become a thief. That's how I started stealing, and this is where I am now. It was my rebellion against the world. I hated it! I wanted to destroy it! Any bastard..."

BEEP

"Thank you."

The bell rang just before his last line, nearly filling the three minutes.

Indeed, he was impressive. Kim Do-han was the first to receive a "well done" from the judges.

The order continued smoothly,

The last participant of the first part, a girl from Seo Won High School, stepped onto the stage.

"Why are you looking for me? Who are you to give me orders? Have you ever thought about what it would be like to be in my shoes?"

Her voice was piercing, and the three minutes passed in an instant.

Her breathing and emotional flow were perfectly synchronized, and her movements were precise.

All the judges nodded in approval.

After lunch, the second part of the competition began. As the event progressed, the judges' faces showed signs of fatigue, and they pressed the bell more quickly.

It was my turn.

"Participant number 249, please come forward."

I walked onto the stage calmly, determined to pour out the character within me.

The judges whispered to each other.

"Indeed, the Seo Won High School student was excellent. It seems there won't be any surprises. The last participant, number 250 from Seo Won High School, is a strong contender for the grand prize."

"Number 46 was also good. I noted it down. Kim Do-han, I think."

"Right. He was good. His voice was excellent, and he was flexible. His natural acting left a strong impression."

The judges seemed to have already written me off, as if the competition was over.

"Begin."

I steadied my breathing and relaxed my shoulders.

I immersed myself in the mind of a psychopathic serial killer with two personalities: one trying to save a woman and the other trying to kill her. The personality trying to save the woman confessed to the police.

"The devil didn't suddenly appear to me. It didn't rise from the ground or fall from the sky. It was with me from the beginning... from my mother's womb."

I calmly narrated the killer's thoughts, starting with a composed and methodical explanation.

"While swimming, the demon suddenly strangled itself. It said it wanted to live with me... It said it would leave its body and come to me... It was the first time I saw its terrifying eyes in my mother's womb. My voice began to tremble."

"Scared... Scared... From then on, I did what the demon told me. I kicked and hit my mother's belly, stole, and killed... as it commanded."

My pulse quickened, and my breathing became rough. My body's rhythm became irregular.

The judges leaned forward, their eyes intense, as if they were being pulled into my breathing.

"No, no... I didn't kill the woman. She's an angel I can't kill... No, no, don't come out. Don't come out!"

The demon inside me emerged.

Its hoarse voice shook my head.

"Bring it! Bring it! Bring her neck!!..."

"No! No!..."

"Then I'll kill your mother. I'll smash your brother with a hammer and stab your father... Ahh... Ahh... Ahhh... Please, just leave me alone! Get out of my body! Go away! Go awayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
