Chapter 21

The next day was a downpour from morning. Al was a bit anxious, feeling the need to earn some money for his armor, but there was nothing he could do about it.

"Well, don't get so down. There are other ways to earn money."

Under the eaves facing the backyard, Al and Orson sat side by side, maintaining their weapons and tools. Nearby, the innkeeper's daughter, Laurein, and her mother, Iris, were doing the laundry. While Al was intently sharpening his knife, Orson, wiping his sword with a tattered cloth, said in a carefree tone,

"Thanks, yeah... I know, but..."

"Sometimes a break is good. You can drink during the day. How about a drink, Al? If you don't have money, I can lend you a little."

Orson made a gesture as if holding a cup in one hand, but Al, without looking, focused on sharpening his knife. Orson smiled wryly at this.

"By the way, that physical enhancement spell yesterday was amazing. I thought it was only for yourself."

As if hoping to change the subject to magic, Orson said, and Al immediately nodded and became more talkative.

"Yeah, but it's hard to adjust when casting it on others. It's fine for specific tasks like heavy lifting or running, but in combat, it becomes complex, so it's not very useful unless you do it yourself."

"Is that so? Could that spell fix... this?"

Orson tapped his left ankle, which had been broken by a monster's attack. The wound had healed, but the bone was misaligned, and the ankle was completely immobile.

"Sorry, but that's impossible."

Al shook his head.

"Figures... I knew it. But I just couldn't give up. I had to ask."

"Recovery spells didn't work?"

"Yeah, it seems only high-level regeneration spells can do it. Powerful spells that can regrow a severed arm in one go. Only the saints in the capital's church can use them."

"I see..."

Al tested the edge of the knife with his thumb, satisfied with the result. He wiped it with an oiled rag and sheathed it.

"You mentioned you're practicing another spell. What is it?"

"Yeah, it's a transportation spell. The shopkeeper said it's quite popular, but I've only seen it used twice."

"What kind of spell is it?"

"Transportation."

At Orson's question, Al cast the spell. A black, semi-transparent disc appeared in front of him.

"What's this disc?"

When Orson tried to touch the disc, it reacted and moved away from his hand.

"You can place items on it. If someone else tries to reach for it, it moves away."

Al placed his sheathed knife on the disc. As Orson reached for it, the disc moved away.

"Hmm..."

After Orson muttered this, he quickly moved his hand. The disc tried to move, but the knife was already in Orson's hand.

"It's not that fast. It's easy to take from the side."

Al nodded several times at Orson's words.

"Yeah, and when you try to navigate through a crowd, the disc can get stuck and stop. If you don't return quickly, it will disappear. It's not useless outdoors, but it's hard to use in a city with many people."

"I see. How much weight can it carry?"

"From what I've heard, it can carry about 50 kg, but I haven't tested that."

"50 kg, huh? A bit over, but can I ride it?"

Orson was quite a bit over the limit. With his equipment, it was probably double. But the idea of carrying a person was intriguing to Al.

"Hmm, let's try. Wait a moment."

"Transportation."

Al dispelled the disc and cast the spell again. The disc turned brown and shaped like a chair without legs, complete with a backrest and armrests. Al supported the chair-shaped disc with his hand.

"Wow, you can change the color and shape?"

"Yeah, I tried and it worked. Not too complex, but it can take many forms. Try sitting on it gently."

Orson placed his hand on the armrest of the floating chair, pulled it closer, and sat down. However, the chair slowly touched the ground and stopped moving.

"Hehe, too heavy."

Al couldn't help but laugh at the sight. Laurein and Iris, who were watching, also giggled.

"Damn, maybe people can't ride it."

Orson retorted, so Al asked Laurein and Iris if they wanted to try.

"Huh? No, I... I don't think so..."

"I want to try."

As Laurein hesitated, her daughter Iris raised her hand enthusiastically.

"Alright, go ahead."

Al approached Iris with a smile, placing one hand on the chair and the other out to her. Iris took his hand and carefully sat down. The chair trembled slightly but didn't touch the ground like it did with Orson; it floated gently in the air.

"Wow, it works with a person. Amazing."

Al couldn't help but grab Iris's hand with both of his and exclaim. Iris blushed slightly and nodded. Orson and Laurein were also surprised.

"Alright, Iris, hold on."

Al jumped lightly on the spot and circled the small courtyard under the eaves. The chair Iris was sitting on followed him, floating in the air.

"Kyaa, it moves on its own, it's fun!"

Iris, gripping the armrest, couldn't help but shout. Al and Iris enjoyed this for a while.

"It follows well, and the movement isn't too rough. There might be many ways to use it."

After a while, Orson asked Al, looking a bit envious.

"Yeah, I thought it might not work, but it seems better than I expected."

Al said, thinking about various possibilities.
