Your Scale
Zhu Heng had been on the verge of breaking the law since he was born and had never once crossed the line and gotten himself into trouble, but he didn’t think that this time he would’ve gotten into big trouble and got directly involved.
When he followed Bao Jin into the Zhangwei Group’s building and saw the three letters “AMB” plastered in the elevator, his legs weakened like noodles.
Before returning home, he had heard that there seemed to be a formal administration for non-humans in the country and thought it was similar to the Vampire League or Witch League abroad, which didn’t care about anyone but itself, but now it seemed he might have been wrong.
As the elevator ascended, Zhu Heng almost collapsed limply to the ground. Zhen Zhizhang was no better, his eyes rolling white and wondering when he would faint.
The two men were instantly frozen stiff by the sweep of Bao Jin’s eye, standing straight up in the lift.
Bao Jin led the way into his office, where a young man with white hair was sitting in his place.
Seeing Bao Jin enter, he sat upright at once. “Huh, you’re back?”
Bao Jin frowned. “What are you doing in my office?”
The white-haired youth curled his lips and quietly sat aside. Although this person had no cleanliness, he had a really strong sense of territory. If he hadn’t still been useful as a deputy director, he might have been thrown out by Lord Candle Dragon for his lack of territorial awareness.
Bao Jin hadn’t loosened his brows yet. “What are you doing here today? Next time don’t just randomly come in.”
The young man with white hair crossed his legs. “Let me remind you that that one has a week left in his observation period, and it’s time for you to prepare your hazard report, which I’m going to file in the archives next week. Hm, who’re they?”
The white-haired young man was Bai Jue, the deputy director of the AMB, and as a divine beast who had inherited the Bai Ze1 bloodline, all the information of the entire AMB had passed through his hands, and he had counted the countless lists in the archives in his heart, and the ones Bao Jin brought today had obviously not been registered in their bureau.
Bai Jue waited for a moment, but before Bao Jin could answer, he looked up in surprise.
Bao Jin paused turning on the computer – he had been discussing the video with Pei Shiyi before he returned to the AMB. It seemed that the three-month deadline was still far away, but now Bai Jue was telling him that there was only one week left?
Light flashed on the screen and the computer finished booting up, but Bao Jin didn’t do anything for a while.
Bai Jue, “Boss?”
“Mhm.” Bao Jin responded and opened the document for the hazard statement.
What does “Mhm” mean? Say something.
Bai Jue had no choice but to repeat his words.
Bao Jin said, “He went to the cat cafe to steal a cast, claiming to be a foreigner. It just so happens that there was a group of troublemakers recently, so go and find out if he has anything to do with that group.”
When it came to business, Bai Jue’s expression was much more serious. “I was just about to tell you that we got a lead this morning and have sent someone to follow it. Can you guess what that gang came here for?”
Bao Jin was sitting in the sunshine, and without Pei Shiyi to keep him busy, he couldn’t raise his spirits, and soon began to get sleepy, struggling to muster up some energy to listen to Bai Jue’s chatter.
Bai Jue, “The black market is much more rampant abroad than here. Aren’t pets always popular among the wizard and elves there? Some of them are so unscrupulous that they don’t want to spend the money, so they go around catching dogs and cats that are close to humans. When they are done with their own domestic woes, they have come to us and are doing some sneaky things. We are now fishing for the big fish, uprooting them and sending them back to the West.”
Hearing this, Zhu Heng’s legs went limp and he fell straight to the ground.
Bai Jue was startled. “What’s wrong with him?”
Bao Jin combined the information Bai Jue had given him with what Zhu Heng had done last night and had already guessed Zhu Heng’s connections abroad. When he heard the fluttering sound he just lifted his eyes and swept them over. “As I said earlier, these two went to the cat cafe last night to steal cats.”
Bai Jue froze and immediately narrowed his eyes- oh right, so these two people were probably part of the same group!
He clicked his tongue. “I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to attack without evidence, but it’s like the evidence was delivered to me. Boss, I’ll take these two away.”
Bao Jin said, “Deal with the fatty first and then give him to me later, he’s useful.”
Bai Jue made a noise of acknowledgement, and on his way out he admonished, “Boss you remember to write the hazard statement, it needs to be signed by that rare creature, I want it filed at the end of the observation period.”
He took the two men to make a note, detained Zhen Zhizhang, who was on the verge of passing out, and sent Zhu Heng back.
Bao Jin smoothly drew out the statements from the printer and gently folded them twice. “I’m going back to the cat cafe now, you guys check things out over there first, call me again if you need to.”
After he finished, he walked over and grabbed Zhu Heng by the collar with one hand and disappeared in the blink of an eye, leaving Bai Jue scratching his head, always thinking that Bao Jin’s words just now were strange- what do you mean going “back” to the cat cafe?
It was normal to go home or to the AMB, but it was strange to go back to the cat cafe… has the boss made the cat cafe his home?
……
The cat cafe was particularly crowded today, they all basically came for the little tortoiseshells.
These two little things, rubbed the entire cat cafe floor, always followed by a group of people holding up their phones and snapping away.
Little hips that wiggled when they walked.
The fat tail that stuck up high.
And…cough cough2.
As soon as Bao Jin entered, Dai Dai, who was near the door, saw him and rushed over, meowing. Bao Jin leaned down and Dai Dai immediately climbed up his sleeve and onto his shoulder, looking curiously at Zhu Heng behind Bao Jin’s back.
Dai Dai cocked his little head. “Meow ow?”
He felt that this fat uncle looked familiar.
A cat at this age usually thought about what he ate morning, noon and night, being able to remember the human he met last night, he was definitely qualified as having a good memory.
Bao Jin reached out and put him down. “He came to make a video for our cat cafe, where’s your boss?”
Zhu Heng wanted to cry, was he actually filming?
Of course he was going to film. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for, and since Zhu Heng could no longer do the documentary, he simply needs to make a video for their cat cafe.
But while Bao Jin was serious, Pei Shiyi only mentioned it casually.
Pei Shiyi faced Zhu Heng, whose legs were trembling, held his jaw and pondered. He was just joking at the time, not really thinking about it, but he didn’t expect Bao Jin to be serious.
Pei Shiyi, “Forget it, I was just joking. I don’t have a camera here for him to use either, so you’d better take him back and question him well. Focus on your serious business first Director and stop letting that gang run around.”
He probably couldn’t talk to Bao Jin properly, and when he couldn’t get a proper sentence out of him, he had to find an excuse to probe him a little. For example, the second half of the sentence just now was completely blurted out without thinking, not that Pei Shiyi really intended to argue, he was just used to it.
Pei Shiyi pressed his knuckles against his lips, feeling idle as well.
Bao Jin also very skillfully pushed back Pei Shiyi’s idle paws. “That would also require a helping hand from a warm-hearted person like Boss Pei.”
It only took a mortal twenty-one days to develop a habit. Bao Jin was born a divine object that did not match his mortal body, and in less than three months he had actually developed an inexplicable “skill”.
Pei Shiyi scoffed. “Fake seriousness.”
The cat cafe was open for business and it was not convenient for Pei Shiyi to stay in the corner with Bao Jin to talk. He was just about to turn around when he suddenly remembered something and fished out a greenish-black scale from his pocket.
“Here, your scale.”
Bo Jin remembered the hazard statement he had just printed out, paused and said, “Keep it, you might need it later, you might as well pay more attention to the cat cafe these days.” It wouldn’t be long before the AMB closed the net and blew out the foreigners who were stealing cats and dogs everywhere. This was the time of year when they were desperate to make one last score, and the number of lost pets in Yu Chuan had risen sharply.
As the saying goes, you’re not afraid of a thief that steals but of a thief that thinks. Pei Shiyi didn’t understand that foreign system and was easily exploited.
Bao Jin finished his instructions, rubbed his hand over the paper for a moment and pulled the statement out. “Right, there’s still a week left in the three-month observation period, I’ve finished printing the statement, just sign it if there’s no problem.”
Pei Shiyi almost didn’t respond. “Hmm?”
He froze and said half-heartedly. “Okay, I understand.”
With a slight frown, he slowly took the statement, his expression unusually hesitant, as if he was holding back something.
Bao Jin’s heart was slightly moved: Perhaps Pei Shiyi had already gotten used to his presence? He had been at the cat cafe for three months, hanging around in front of Pei Shiyi’s eyes day in and day out, even if he was an inanimate object, he should still have some feelings.
Once this subtle idea hit the ground, it immediately took root and broke through the soil, sprouting a divine seedling.
Most godly creatures that swallowed rivers and drank the sea were a bit overwhelmed with pity and love. Pei Shiyi was like this, and Bao Jin was no exception. Once he thought that Pei Shiyi might have that little bit of reluctance in his heart, Bao Jin squeezed his fingers without moving, intending to say a few kind words.
Pei Shiyi unfolded the statement and read it at a glance, he held back for a while, couldn’t hold back, looked backed over his shoulder and suddenly laughed, “Wonderful… I can go order a cake tomorrow.”
Bao Jin’s face was expressionless as he plucked the flailing seedling.
