Shouxian Peak (1)
Lao Tzu!
Pei Yu didn’t worry that Lao Tzu would be slaughtered, she was a nearly mature cow. She just wanted to let her go free.
Unexpectedly, she would be brought back by Zhao Jianyi.
She was quite moved. Zhao Jianyi should have learned about the scalper when he went back to see Chu Xiaotang.
With thousands of mountains and rivers, he still did not forget to bring Lao Tzu back.
“Hey, is there still a cow?”
Huai Bai thought, if you dare to love, you can open a zoo.
In the future, Shouxian Peak can expand its business, with a ticket costing two spirit stones, and also let those children see the world.
Da Bai called “quack quack” and flew, Huai Bai’s eyes lit up, and a white dumpling was pulled out from Da Bai’s back.
“What are you doing here!”
Xiao Bai smiled and changed back to the appearance of a little girl, and said: “I just saw Miss Sister flying in the sky.”
She blushed and looked at Da Bai, twisting her clothes corners, “Miss Sister is so pretty.”
Da Bai: “Ga?”
“My Da Bai is so good-looking, do you want to ride it?” Huai Bai was heartbroken, “The world is going downhill, and the demons of today are degenerates! You actually climbed on her back secretly and bullied someone who can’t be transformed!”
Xiao Bai’s face was blushing, she glanced at Da Bai, then hung her head quickly, and said, “I treat Miss Sister sincerely.”
Da Bai: “Quack?”
Huai Bai raised her eyebrows, “Cang Hai, please translate it.”
The young woman in the blue dress listened carefully to Da Bai’s screams, and said: “She said that different species cannot love each other. She likes ducks.”
Huai Bai held her forehead, “This… Anyway, Da Bai won’t accept you, give it up.”
Xiao Bai made a fist, “I won’t give up!”
Her eyes are firm, and she vowed to be able to embrace the beauty.
Da Bai: “Quack!” Then she fluttered and flew, and white feathers fell like snow.
Huai Bai said: “The hair loss is so serious, she will be bald sooner or later, are you sure you want it?”
The little idiot didn’t change her mind, “Even if she ends up bald, I will pick the heads from the snow-capped mountains and the roots by the waterside, and find all kinds of elixirs for her to cure her hair loss.”
Huai Bai was very moved yet poured cold water unceremoniously. “But she likes ducks.”
(T/N: pouring cold water means to disappoint someone with the cold reality)
Xiao Bai thought for a while, suddenly turned into a snow-white duck, flapping its wings to chase Da Bai and flew away.
Cang Hai’s eyes were a little moved, and she said, “It’s a pity that Da Bai has a bright eye in broad daylight, so she can see through her disguise at a glance.”
Huai Bai smiled, “Let them go.”
Cang Hai asked, “Would you like to tell her that Da Bai likes to eat and drink water from the Li Spring, and likes to sleep on the branches of parasol trees?”
Huai Bai curls her lips, her eyelashes are like feathers, and it trembles slightly, “Chasing someone, you don’t need so many twists and turns. You don’t need Li Spring water, you don’t need parasol tree branches, a sincere heart is enough.” She paused, and then said: “The same goes for chasing a peacock who thinks she is a duck.”
Cang Hai glanced at Rong Jibai, and suddenly realized, “That’s it.”
Pei Yu glanced at Huai Bai, and silently remembered, “That’s it, the master really understands everything, even how to chase an evil spirit.”
Lao Tzu was chained to the back mountain.
It only heard the footsteps of a few people, and started pouting its hooves while raising itsneck, “Moo-moo-moo!”
Zhao Jianyi crouched in front of her with a cabbage, “Ancestor, what’s the matter with you?”
“Apprentice!”
Zhao Jianyi turned his head and smiled and waved: “Master, Junior Sister.”
Seeing Lao Tzu, Pei Yu also smiled a little on her face. The previous life, Lao Tzu had already passed away at this time, but this life she is still alive before her eyes.
Destiny really can be changed.
She walked quickly to Lao Tzu, raised her hand and touched her head.
The moment her hand touched the cow’s head, Lao Tzu’s body shook and suddenly fell to one side.
Everyone present was shocked.
Huai Bai reacted first, touched its neck, and whispered: “It’s dead.”
Cang Hai and Rong Jibai came over, chatting around Lao Tzu’s corpse.
“Died on the spot?”
“No, it was okay just now. Is it possible that there is a hidden illness?”
Rong Jibai said, “Senior Brother, did you make it sick?”
Zhao Jianyi wanted to cry without tears, “I really didn’t, alas, I don’t know what’s going on, I even wash the cabbage myself and eat it.”
While they were all looking at Lao Tzu, Pei Yu took a few steps away, secretly took out the reincarnation stone from her arms, and glanced at it.
The most central gem has already lit up.
Animals are different from humans. Humans have three ethereal souls and seven material souls, while animals only have one life soul, not heaven and earth souls.
Lao Tzu has her mother’s life soul.
Pei Yu was stunned, and a line of tears suddenly fell from the corner of her eyes.
Lao Tzu was born shortly after her mother’s death, and she was born with extraordinary humanity.
During her most helpless period, this little scalper stayed with her all the time.
Later, Lao Tzu ran thousands of miles with her on her back, trekking through thousands of mountains and rivers, and died at the foot of Gushan.
She never dared to expect her mother’s love. As far as she can remember, that beautiful and stupid woman has never paid attention to her.
She won’t sew warm winter clothes for her, won’t make fragrant beanbags for her, and won’t breathe lightly on injured hands.
Mother, she wouldn’t even give her a look.
But she did not dare to ask for it.
She thought that she was born guilty and missed her mother’s life. The children of other people’s families came from marriage and born out of love. And she was just the opposite.
She put herself in the dust and lived in the world humbly with her head lowered.
No one will love her.
It turned out not to be so.
“Cub,” Huai Bai was stunned for a moment, then bent down, gently wiped away the tears on her face, and said softly: “Don’t cry.”
Pei Yu stood on tiptoe, wrapped Huai Bai’s neck, and leaned against her chest without saying a word.
The warm liquid spreads across the chest, seeps through the thin green shirt, and flows freely in Huai Bai’s heart.
Huai Bai hugged the child tighter, pity flashed under her eyes, and she sighed lowly, “Pei Yu…”
“Little Junior Sister, I really didn’t mean it.” Zhao Jianyi collapsed and was about to cry.
Huai Bai waved her hand to signal them to leave, and then stroked Pei Yu’s thin back. The child is very thin, with a protruding spine behind her back, and she feels a little stubborn.
She remembered a stray kitten she had picked up when she was in the original world. The cat was like this, thin, small, and defensive. When she saw the cat food, she approached cautiously, and jumped into the grass with a slight movement, watching the surroundings vigilantly.
But after getting acquainted, the kitten will gently rub her hand with her small head.
It is afraid of this crisis-ridden world, but it has given her the trust and tenderness of a lifetime.
Pei Yu hugged Master quietly for a long time, then let go, and said dumbly, “Master, I’m fine.”
The tears on her face were dry, but her eyes were still red and swollen.
Huai Bai patted her on the back.
They buried Lao Tzu together.
Pei Yu stood beside the small mound for a long time, while Huai Bai stood silently beside her, putting her hand on her shoulder.
The sky gradually dimmed, the bright moon rose, and the bright moonlight sprinkled layers of silver on the ground.
Shouxian Peak is like Changchun in all four seasons, but Huai Bai is still worried about the child being cold, so she puts a coat on her.
Pei Yu recovered, smiled, and said softly, “Master, let’s go and rest.”
Huai Bai held her, “Well, you can sleep with me tonight.”
After returning to the residence, the two of them simply washed and prepared to go to bed.
“Pei Yu,” Huai Bai sat on the bed, leaning against a round of bright moon behind her, tucked the quilt for the child, “I also raised a small pet before.”
Pei Yu looked at her with shiny and wet eyes.
Huai Bai leaned on the edge of the window with one hand and smiled: “It was a kitten with wet eyes. It was cute.”
Pei Yu asked: “Is it Nine Tails?”
Huai Bai shook her head, “It’s not a demon, it’s just a very ordinary little orange cat. I wasn’t able to wait for it to become a fat orange, and it was no longer there.” She sighed, with some emotion, “Human life is like this. No one can accompany ourselves for a lifetime. The only thing we can do is to have no regrets when we accompany each other. In this way, we will not be sad when we part.”
“Is… Is there regret in your heart?”
Huai Bai’s figure paused slightly, as if thinking of sad things, slowly lowered her eyes to hide the water, “I once had three friends, and they were all amazing people. I know if they were alive, they should have reached the top of the immortal road, and have a splendid and glorious life.” Her voice trembled a little, as if thinking of some old things that she could not bear to think about, but did not dare to forget, “It is a pity that the world is unpredictable. They should have moved the world, but they silently died in a dirty and dark corner.”
Pei Yu’s heart trembled, and she held Huai Bai’s lowered hand, “Master, is this Shiling?”
Huai Bai was stunned. “Have you heard of that?” She smiled bitterly, and the pain in her eyes was cut into countless pieces by the moonlight. “I used to be cold and selfish, and I never regarded this place as a home. He Qing, Ruxue, and Changfeng didn’t care, because I was the youngest and they always took care of me. The reward for the Sword Test that year was In the Clouds. They secretly lost to me in order to get me the sword.”
“He Qing is the first disciple of the Mo Sect. There is no second of him in the world of mechanism skills. He should have been a venerable of the Mo family. Ruxue had the phoenix’s bloodline, her bow skills and Daoism were first-rate, and Changfeng, that person is the most talented person I have ever seen. “Huai Bai smiled slightly, “I often think that to be able to seek the Great Dao of Heaven and Earth, to have such a group of bright and beautiful friends, this is something I never dared to think about before, so even in the future… what regrets can I have?”
“It’s just that in the end, I still leave regrets.” Huai Bai slowly closed her eyes, “I never thought that their fate would change because of me. They died in front of me, and they died in Shiling. There is no sound in heaven, and there is no corpse left.”
“Master,” Pei Yu carefully held Huai Bai’s hand, trying to comfort her, “Don’t be sad.”
Huai Bai opened her eyes and smiled at her. Her eyes seemed to be full of water and moonlight, “I am not sad, it has been three hundred years, and few people still remember their names. Now that I have you, I have already asked for benevolence, and have no regrets anymore.” She touched Pei Yu’s soft hair and took out a small lens from her arms. “This is what I got from when I traveled in the past, and it has supported me through the most difficult years. You see, as long as your mind turns, you will see those people.”
Three energetic young people appeared in the mirror, with their upright blades flying among the clouds.
Huai Bai released her hand, and the picture disappeared immediately, “Pei Yu, I will give it to you, and if you have someone or something you miss, please use it to see.”
Pei Yu took the lens, and felt a jade-like texture, similar to the other lens in her possession, but slightly smaller.
“Master, what about you?”
Huai Bai shook her head, “I don’t need it.” She smiled in her eyes, and her voice was softer than moonlight, “They have returned to me.”
Pei Yu was stunned and looked at her puzzledly.
Huai Bai didn’t answer, but said softly: “Tomorrow we will have a morning meeting, go to bed first.”
Pei Yu nodded, put the lens away, glanced at Huai Bai, and then slowly closed her eyes.
When the child was asleep, Huai Bai stood up silently and jumped out of the open window.
With her current cultivation base, naturally, she doesn’t need sleep.
Moon stars are rare, and the blue sky is bright and deep.
The geese returned to the cliff and the wind was icy. The young man sat on the edge of the cliff, his robes blown up.
Huai Bai sat beside him and handed over a glass of sake, “What’s going on? Sit here in the middle of the night?”
Zhao Jianyi tightened his lips and looked a little sad, “Master, I didn’t mean to. When the cow came to Gushan, it was fine.”
Huai Bai drank from the jug, “I know, you are not wrong, the cow is not sick, even its soul has disappeared.”
Zhao Jianyi opened his mouth wide, “Ah…what is going on?”
Huai Bai shook her head, “I don’t know, maybe it’s a curse it’s been hit with long ago, maybe it’s fate, anyway, it has nothing to do with you, don’t blame yourself.”
“But, Junior Sister is still sad.” Zhao Jianyi lowered his head and said dejectedly: “I’m really useless, I can’t even do a good job of driving a cow. When the Junior Sister came to guard Shouxian Peak, I made her cry.”
“Okay, okay,” Huai Bai looked at bright moon in the center of the sky, “You are just getting started earlier than them, a little older, but don’t take all the responsibilities on yourself all the time. Besides, if you really want to compensate, why don’t you make some little things for your junior sister. She is about to go to Feiyu Peak to learn the Six Daos, and I am afraid that the people of Baidai Peak will also make things difficult, so she might need some little things.”
Zhao Jianyi’s eyes lit up, “Yeah! I can make a few , and I can also make a Yan model guardian or a Yan model cow to give her.”
(T/N: the original translation of Yan model etc is something else but since I’m pretty sure he’s referring to inventions that are like model figures that would work like a magic puppet or a container of some sort, calling it a model would make more sense to people reading)
Huai Bai patted him on the shoulder, “Don’t blow the cold wind on the cliff, go back soon. I don’t want to run around to be a spiritual mentor at night.”
As soon as Zhao Jianyi got up, he smiled and said, “Thank you, Master, for your enlightenment.”
Huai Bai waved her hand, “Quickly go home.”
Zhao Jianyi nodded and said, “You drink less wine!”
“I know, I know.”
Watching the young man walk away, Huai Bai raised her head and drank the drink in the pot.
The clear drink ran down from her jaw, fainting a large wet mark on her tsing yi.
Huai Bai put the wine glass aside, her hands behind her, her feet dangling on the edge of the cliff.
A reddish cloud flew slowly over her snow-white face, and she shook her head, actually a little bit drunk.
People only dare to be drunk when they are safe, and she has not been drunk for hundreds of years.
There seemed to be three young men and women in the bright moon, one in red hunting clothes, with fierce temperament; the other gentle, always regarded as her elder brother; the other was broad-minded and cynical, saying that she would ride the long wind to break the waves.
Huai Bai held up the wine in a daze.
Vaguely, four shadows appeared under her feet, and they invited her to have a drink together.
“A toast to invite the bright moon, and the shadow becomes four people.” Huai Bai laughed idiotically, and then the laughter became louder and louder, echoing on the empty cliff.
After a long laugh, she hugged her head, and her face was covered with tears.
Is today’s bright moon the bright moon of the past?
Is the old deceased at this time the same old deceased?
She didn’t know, but she could only do her best to have no complaints and no regrets.
“The dead are like water in a river, gone forever in the stream,” she muttered in a low voice. After a long time, she smiled softly, her eyebrows were the sharpness of the past years, and the sadness of the vicissitudes of life.
“I want it to return, and it will return.”
Zhen’s thoughts:
I think you have some inkling of what’s going on with what Huai Bai said about getting her friends back. If not, well you can probably figure it out if you think about it. I won’t reveal it myself since it does get addressed in a more concrete way later.
Also RIP Lao Tzu, the reveal that it was actually Pei Yu’s mother’s soul in her is kinda devastating. I think finding out in this life was the best option since in the last life, I don’t think she even had the reincarnation stone to collect her mother’s soul. That knowledge would just be very painful with no reconciliation for it.
BTW, the schedule for this will go back to normal tomorrow. I just released this late so that I can make the double post like I said I would after getting better.
P.S. I’m also gonna need to go back and edit all of Lao Tzu’s pronouns. :’) I thought that there would be some kind of shock that Lao Tzu was a female cow all along or something when I was first translating, but I just remembered it wrong.
