The place in front of the alley was half illuminated by the moonlight and half hidden in the dark. The evening wind gently blew and a cloud quietly passed the moon. The alley however was completely covered in darkness.
The wind was getting stronger and the dark clouds covered all the stars in the sky. A heavy rain seemed to be coming.
Zhuang Yan knew that since he was led to this place, there was no way to escape, but he still wanted to ask Zhao Wei why.
For many years, he helped Zhao Wei out, when he owed debts of than more 300,000 yuan because of his gambling. He even gave his winnings to him, so he could pay off the debt and now he is returning his favor in such a way.
When Zhao Wei saw Zhuang Yan come, he uneasy took two steps back. He bit his lip and said: “Sorry, Brother Zhuang but I also have no other way” . Although he said these words, Zhuang Yan couldn’t find any apology in the eyes of the other party.
When did he start to change? Or had he never changed?
Cool rain started to pour from the sky and fell on Zhuang Yan’s face. Without waiting for him to ask his questions, a somewhat husky male voice sounded behind him: “You run very fast, ah. Why aren’t you running this time, hmm?”
Zhuang Yan turned his head and under the yellow street light at the intersection, he saw that the road had been blocked by more than 10 people.
“Zhao Wei, this kid told me that you could run away from us but I didn’t believe him”, the leader of the group showed a sarcastic smile, “And in the end we still caught you.”
Zhuang Yan looked back to Zhao Wei. Zhao Wei was wearing a helmet for protection.
“Let’s start, catch him alive or dead, in the end it will all be the same.” Under the command of the leader, the group of younger brothers behind him, immediately shouted at Zhuang Yan and rushed over.
They thought that they could catch Zhuang Yan easily, but the result was not as they imagined. They were in the dark, even if there was a flashlight to light a small area they were still like a blind man, unable to even touch a small corner of Zhuang Yan’s clothing.
Zhuang Yan once practiced boxing. His reaction speed, punch speed and the strength of his fist was not comparable to ordinary people. He was agile, his actions were flowing, not procrastinated and even surrounded by so many people he was still at ease.
The rain was getting stronger and a loud thunder could be heard. Zhuang Yan fought with his attackers with each punch fiercely hitting them. Every impact was accompanied by a painful howling.
He just ran for a long time and has wasted too much energy, so although these people had no way to take him on, the situation was still not optimistic. He must hurry up to resolve all these people.
A silver lightning suddenly crossed the night sky like a dragon, piercing the darkness. Zhuang Yan’s figure illuminated by the glare of the lightning seemed indestructible.
Throwing punches, jabs and combinations of those, he had not been so happy for a long time. The fight seemed to put him in a trance, he seemed to be back on the stage, but his opponent this time was inexhaustible. Soon after the opponent on his side was taken down with wailing cry. The voices, sounds and scoldings mixed with thunder and wind and in the pouring rain a tragic symphony appeared.
The rainwater converged into a small stream which flowed along the alley, glistening in the shimmering light.
Zhao Wei, who had already fled to the intersection who knows when, shouted to the crying man who fell on the ground: ”Get him! All of you!”
Zhuang Yan looked up to Zhao Wei, in his eyes a thousand words, but in the end he choose to remain silent.
Even after many years as brothers, he still betrayed him.
The boss of these thugs saw that they weren’t Zhuang Yan’s opponents, so he took out a phone to call another group of people and soon after, these people arrived at the battlefield. With their hands full of iron bars and hammers, they swarmed the area.
Zhuang Yan fists collided with his enemies, but more and more iron bars from all directions hit him. His back was hammered heavily, a sharp pain traveled up his spine. The intense pain seemed to announce a fracture. Zhuang Yan let out a muffled noise and spit out a mouthful of blood. The red stain quickly disappeared with the falling rain.
More and more poles hit Zhuang Yan’s body, driving out his strength and life.
Despite being in such a hopeless situation, Zhuang Yan still tried to escape from here, but the other side was just too powerful. Even if they didn’t have weapons, with their number alone they still easily overwhelmed him. He could not escape.
Zhuang Yan was hit hard and the bones in his chest seemed to be displaced.
Finally, Zhuang Yan fell, his limbs were stepped on, blood seeped out from his clothes and the original white shirt was dyed bright red. The rain had already drenched him, his gray eyes looked to the sky, blinked twice and gradually lost their luster.
He was raised from the ground. His mouth cracked, his clothes hung in tatters and his skin was full of bruises and wounds.
The leader of the group punched Zhuang Yan’s chin. When he heard Zhuang Yan faint muffled humming, he still hadn’t let out enough steam, but when he thought that he would later let this person sink to the bottom of the sea, to feed the fish, he withdraw his hand and said to the younger brother: “Tie him up, let’s see if he can run away this time!”
Zhao Wei also followed these people on the van.
In order to prevent the emerge of future incidents, they intended to throw Zhuang Yan directly in the sea to let the water to deal him.
The heavy rain, the turbid sea creating towering waves and the glowing foam in the dark, between heaven and earth. The depths of the ocean issued a loud roar and the sky the sound of a thunder.
The boat staggered on the sea. Someone picked up a sack and stones from the bottom of the cabin, ready to throw Zhuang Yan into the sea.
“Wait a minute, we have to make a little video to send it to the employer later.” The leader of the group took out the phone, aligned Zhuang Yan and after gathering enough evidences, he smiled and said, “Well, put him in the sack.”
Even if he didn’t die in the sea today he would most likely be severely disabled.
When the sack was about to be sealed, the tape on Zhuang Yan’s mouth was torn off.
Zhuang Yan opened his eyelids to look at the leader. He didn’t speak, he knew that he made a mistake and now it was useless to talk about it.
“If you have nothing to say, then seal the sack.”
A huge wave came, the hull rocked and the crowd exclaimed. Zhuang Yan’s line of sight fell in endless darkness.
In the dark, he seemed to hear Zhao Wei’s flattering voice: “Brother Jian, when will my money arrive?”
“Boss Wu will give it to you, just wait.” Brother Jian smiled, “This makes two loads of money. Ah! When I get off the boat, I’ll take my brothers to a nice meal.”
Zhuang Yan realized another layer of meaning in these words. There were two groups of people who wanted him to die.
He should have asked this when he had the chance, but now it was to late.
“Well, now that the shore is very far away, the weather getting worse and with the wind growing stronger, we aren’t safe at sea. Throw him down.”
He was probably really going to die here today, but he had already thought about this possibility before, so everything had been arranged. Even if he wasn’t there, grandpa would be taken care of.
“I’m sorry, Brother”, Brother Jian kicked Zhuang Yan’s back through the sack. “Someone wants you to die. We have no other choice.”
“Boss, what shall we do next?”
Brother Jian shouted at the younger brother: “You still need me to teach you? Wastes! Tie a stone to the sack and thrown him in the sea.”
The two younger brothers quickly acted according to the instructions of Brother Jian and tied the stone to the sack. Then they counted to three and threw the sack in the sea together.
With a thump, the sack fell into the water and was soon swallowed by the waves and disappeared.
Bright lightnings cut through the night, the deafening thunder was like a roar of Poseidon, all sins would lie in the bottomless sea.
Brother Jian put away his mobile phone. He had sent the video to his two employers, his task had been completed.
……
With a loud noise in his ear, the cold and salty sea water poured in all at once, from his ears, nose, mouth, into his throat and into his internal organs.
He was about to die and Zhuang Yan knew it very clearly.
All the memories of the past began to flash in his mind.
Mrs. Wen kneeling before him, crying and begging him to be her son’s stand-in;
Mr. Wen sitting in his office, coldly telling him that he found a suitable medicine, which as long as he promised to be the bait, could be send immediately to Mr. Zhuang;
Old Grandpa Zhuang lying in the hospital, taking his hand and telling him to come back early and take good care of himself;
Also, that night, in the magnificent manor, when he came to the banquet of Mr. Qin;
And … and … ……
It was a long time ago, he stood on the ring, purple and blue spots across his face, the audience and their loud cheers, those flashlights merging into a sea of stars, the countless flowers thrown to the stage, countless people shouting his name and he held up his golden belt.
Those thoughts gradually floated away from him.
……
Zhuang Yan knew that he was going to die. He had no strength left to fight against this fate.
Or perhaps, he was about to become food for the creatures in the sea with nothing left of him.
His body was sinking in the seemingly endlessness and all he could see was darkness. In his nose, throat, stomach and lungs was water.
He could not breathe and he could not move. So he let the water carry him to a uncertain place, which would be his grave.
The process of death was painful and long. Slowly pictures of the past unfolded before his eyes, seemingly covered by a layer of gloom which made them no longer look real.
Slowly, he began to lose his remaining consciousness.
Vaguely, he felt that the sack that had been placed on himself got cut open by some sharp weapon.
Before he could stretch his limbs, his body was seized and his lips were covered with a cold, soft object.
Zhuang Yan subconsciously opened his mouth.
