After all the trouble, Cheng Ya sighed at children’s creative descriptive skills.
They have slightly gotten more familiar with each other probably through their interactions.
Huo Xiaoman, with a full face of tears, seemed to have calmed down. Once they entered the shop, she sat by the window cradling a cup of ice cream, digging into it with a small spoonful at a time.
Cheng Yan took his phone out and saved the phone number that called into his contact list.
He also searched the phone number up on WeChat 1, but he hesitated and didn’t add that account as friends.
When he made up his mind and looked away, he saw Huo Xiaoman looking at him as she held the spoon.
Cheng Yan asked in a small voice, “What’s wrong?”
Huo Xiaoman tilted her head as she looked at him, and then she poked Cheng Yan’s glasses, giving him a fright.
Seeing his reaction, Huo Xiaoman blinked and asked, “Brother, what is that? One of my classmates also have that, but it’s round.”
Cheng Yan chuckled and leaned towards her. He told her, “These are glasses. You’ll need them if you don’t take good care of your eyes.”
Huo Xiaoman said, “Brother, I want to take a look at it.”
“My glasses?” Cheng Yan asked.
Then the girl sitting on one side nodded heavily.
Cheng Yan hesitated but gave her the glasses. Unexpectedly, someone behind him happened to pass by and the plate they were carrying bumped into him. Then his glasses flew off.
His sight blurred and Cheng yan heard an apology coming from beside him. He wanted to ask where his glasses were but then he heard the sound of plastic breaking. The person once again apologised hastily. “Sorry, your glasses dropped and someone stepped on it.”
Cheng Yan felt troubled and Huo Xiaoman sounded as if she was about to cry.
He quickly soothed her back and gently told her, “It’s okay, Xiaoman. Don’t worry.”
He rummaged through his bag for his contact lens case while telling that person who apologised, “It’s okay, I needed to buy new ones anyway. You can go, don’t worry about it.”
Contact lenses were usually in his bag, but he had never used it on a day-to-day basis. After all, glasses with rims gave him a sense of security but in this situation, he had no other choice than to wear the contact lenses.
The good news is that, other than restoring his vision, it comforted Huo Xiaoman.
The little girl was not crying anymore while her eyes were still watery and there was ice cream around her mouth.
She leaned over and held her hand out until it was in front of his eyes and then she shrank back again. It was as if she saw something magical, something otherworldly.
Her expression made Cheng Yan laugh. He rubbed her head and explained to her, “These are glasses that you put on your eyes.”
“On your eyes?” Perplexed, she nevertheless remembered to scoop out some ice cream to let it melt in her mouth. Then she said, “Brother, the hair on top of your eyes are so long.”
Cheng Yan took a moment to figure out that she was talking about his eyelashes. He looked at Huo Xiaoman with smiles and replied, “You too. Those are called eyelashes.”
“Eye bashes.” Huo Xiaoman replied with ice cream in her mouth.
Cheng Yan waited until she swallowed the ice cream before patiently teaching her the new word. “Eyelashes,” Then he said, “eat up, your dad will probably arrive to pick you up at any moment.”
Huo Xiaoman quickly scooped up a few more, getting it everywhere around her mouth.
Cheng Yan used a tissue and wiped her mouth and heard Huo Xiaoman speak again, “Brother, are you and my dad colleagues?”
“Yeah,” Cheng Yan answered, “why?”
“Then do you like my dad?” Huo Xiaoman asked again.
“I do, I like Xiaoman’s dad.” Cheng Yan froze for a moment before answering, even though he knew Huo Xiaoman wasn’t talking about the question he feared.
Huo Xiaoman pushed away the ice cream cup from her embrace. Then she grabbed Cheng Yan’s sleeves and asked him, “Then is my dad mean?”
“Why did Xiaoman ask me that?” Cheng Yan said, feeling strange that she asked him that.
Huo Xiaoman looked unhappy as her little mouth puckered really high up. She said with a heartfelt tone, “My dad was very angry when I was sick last week.”
“Why was Xiao Man’s dad angry?” Puzzled, Cheng Yan asked.
“I don’t know either, but he was very angry. This part here,” Huo Xiaoman stretched her hand and squeezed her eyebrows together then continued, “this part on dad was closed together. He wasn’t smiling as well so he must be angry.”
Cheng Yan smiled knowingly. “Then did you ask him?”
Huo Xiaoman shook her head and blinked her eyes, her eyelashes fluttering.
Cheng Yan rubbed her head in response and told her, “You dad isn’t angry. He’s worried.”
“Worried? Then he’s not angry?” Huo Xiaoman asked again in suspicion.
“No, he’s not. I can assure you.” Cheng Yan said and held up three fingers to make an oath.
That finally made Huo Xiaoman happy. She asked, “Brother Cheng Yan, do you like theme parks?”
Before she finished, Cheng Yan’s phone rang.
He looked at it for a second and, before answering the phone, whispered to Huo Xiaoman, “It’s from your dad.”
Immediately, he heard Huo Sheng said, “Where are you guys, I’ll come now.”
Cheng Yan looked at Huo Xiaoman who was looking at him eagerly. When the call ended, he quickly smiled and told her, “Look, your dad is worried about you. He said that he’s coming to pick you up.”
Huo Xiaoman grinned happily and she raised her hands up and cheered, “Dad is coming to pick us up!”
