Chapter 1: The City Surrounded by Zombies

At one o'clock in the morning, a hurried alarm sounded over the Nanwu Base.
Jiang Qingshan and Gu Yu simultaneously rolled out of their warm bed.
"What's going on in the middle of the night?" Jiang Qingshan muttered unhappily as she put on her coat.
"The zombies are attacking the city," Gu Yu replied solemnly. "Quickly pack up the things at home; this time it might be very dangerous."
Hearing her husband's words, Jiang Qingshan paused, then came to her senses and immediately stored the bed, wardrobe, living room furniture, and kitchen utensils into her spatial pocket.
When they went out, each of them held a long sword. In the corridor and the square, there were adults shouting, cursing, and children crying, while the sirens in the base continued to blare.
A large number of psychics rushed to the city walls. The couple exchanged a glance and followed the main group.
The city walls were brightly lit. Standing on the wall, they saw the dense crowd of zombies outside the base, stretching as far as the eye could see. Jiang Qingshan asked her husband, "Shitou, how many?"
"I don't know," Gu Yu replied gloomily. "Qingshan, if we can't get through this crisis, can we still be together in the next life?"
Hearing her husband's words, Jiang Qingshan felt a sudden panic. Her husband's mental power could cover a radius of ten thousand miles. If he said this, it could only mean that the number of zombies was enormous. The Nanwu Base had a population of a million, with psychics making up only ten percent. It was already the fifth year of the apocalypse, and the highest-level psychics in the Nanwu Base had reached level seven, with over a hundred at levels five to six. They were both level five psychics. Ordinary people fighting zombies would only end in death.
"We will," Jiang Qingshan said, looking deeply into her husband's eyes.
Gu Yu also looked into his wife's eyes, both wanting to engrave the other's image in their hearts.
"God, there are so many zombies. They don't want us to live anymore."
"What can we do? What can we do? I have elderly parents and young children. Will we all die?"
"Brother, you're luckier than me. I don't even have a woman yet."
The couple was pulled back to reality by the words of the surrounding psychics. Looking at the endless sea of zombies, they both felt an involuntary sense of despair.
Currently, the zombies outside the city walls were mostly levels two to three. Although their levels were not high, their numbers were overwhelming, and they could drag them to death. Moreover, the zombies behind were of higher levels, as Gu Yu had told her.
At this moment, the base's loudspeaker sounded, "Fellow psychics, at this critical moment, as the base commander, there's no point in saying anything else. I only hope that all of you will do your utmost to defend our home and our loved ones against the zombie attack. Thank you all." The base commander's voice, old but strong, was filled with sorrow and encouragement.
Hearing the base commander's words, the psychics fell silent. Could they not do their utmost? Otherwise, they would all die.
"The zombies will reach the city gate in about ten minutes. Please, psychics, prepare yourselves," the base commander's voice sounded again.
Gu Yu was a level five psychic with a strength-type ability, while Jiang Qingshan was a level five spatial and wood-type psychic. From the outbreak of the apocalypse to now, it had been five years, and their abilities could only be considered above average. Since they met, they had always been a pair, without family or teammates, supporting each other through the ups and downs. They understood each other's thoughts with just a look.
