They dared not shout for help, fearing it would attract the undead monsters that had already emerged.
Chunan picked up a broken steel bar along the way, one end still attached to a piece of concrete as big as two or three fists.
Tang Sanli, with his keen eyes, spotted a police baton in a crevice and pulled it out to use as a weapon.
Beneath the baton, a police officer from the detention center lay buried, half of his body already rotten, still wriggling as if trying to squeeze out.
Another undead monster.
Tang Sanli swung the baton and, together with Chunan, rushed away without stopping.
This area originally belonged to the Jiangtian City First Detention Center, but now there were almost no living people left.
The hundreds of people imprisoned here were likely all dead.
Suddenly, Tang Sanli and Chunan stopped, their faces turning grim.
In front of them, the ground had split open, the crack stretching for four or five meters, too wide to jump over, and deep without a bottom, extending in both directions without an end in sight.
"Damn, no wonder it's so quiet here, this path is blocked," Tang Sanli cursed. On the other side of the crack were vast fields of rural farmland. Although many places had split due to the earthquake, there were no dead bodies, so they didn't have to worry about undead monsters.
The First Detention Center was built in the outskirts of Jiangtian City, surrounded by many fields and farmland, and further away were rural houses, but they were all completely collapsed.
"Let's go, we'll circle around from the other side," Tang Sanli licked his lips, and Chunan had no choice but to run along the crack toward the other side.
Suddenly, a sharp scream came from the distance.
"Huh?" Tang Sanli and Chunan's faces changed, and they looked at each other.
"Is there still someone alive over there?"
After a moment of hesitation, Chunan tightened his grip on the steel bar and said, "Let's go," then ran toward the source of the scream.
In such a bizarre and dangerous place, if they couldn't escape immediately, saving another person would make them safer together.
These undead monsters, though terrifying, were not very intelligent and reacted slowly. As long as they weren't in large numbers, they could be dealt with.
Tang Sanli didn't speak but followed Chunan.
The scream continued for a few moments and then abruptly stopped. When Chunan and Tang Sanli reached the area, they suddenly stopped, the scene in the distance making their hair stand on end.
About twenty meters away, on a pile of collapsed walls, a group of people were crouched on the ground, tearing and biting a body.
This group included prisoners in detention center uniforms and police officers in uniforms. Each of them was in tattered clothes, some missing limbs, some with their guts spilling out, and some with half their heads gone, all of them undead.
There were about seven or eight of these undead, surrounding one person, tearing and gnawing at them. The person being surrounded had stopped screaming and was only slightly twitching, clearly not going to survive.
Seeing this bloody scene, Chunan and Tang Sanli's scalps tingled, and a chill ran down their spines. They didn't dare move and immediately began to quietly retreat, fearing they would be discovered.
Suddenly, one of the undead monsters in the group turned its head and looked directly at Chunan and Tang Sanli.
"Discovered?" Chunan and Tang Sanli's hair stood on end, and they couldn't hold back any longer, turning to run away without a second thought.
Their steps were uneven, and they ran until they were out of breath, circling around a half-standing wall. Suddenly, they realized the other side of the wall was littered with dead bodies, at least twenty or thirty of them.
These dead bodies were in terrible condition, most of them only half-remaining, with signs of being bitten by large creatures.
From their clothing, most were women, likely the detainees, and a few were police officers in uniforms.
The Jiangtian City First Detention Center had separate male and female sections, with many female detainees.
The presence of so many female corpses suggested they had reached the original location of the female section of the detention center.
"How did so many people die? It looks like they were bitten by something. This place is not right, we need to turn back quickly," Tang Sanli said, sensing something was off and wanting to turn in another direction.
Suddenly, a voice came from the distance, "Wait for us—"
Chunan looked over and saw a fat woman in a police uniform and a bald young man in a tattered detention center uniform rushing out from the ruins of a collapsed building.
Both were terrified, covered in blood. The fat woman was holding a police baton in front of her chest, and the bald young man, around twenty years old, with a shaved head and tattoos on his arms, was usually a tough guy, but now his face was full of fear.
Chunan and Tang Sanli, surprised to find more survivors, immediately stopped.
The fat woman, drenched in sweat, was a police officer from the female section. Seeing Chunan and Tang Sanli, she let out a sigh of relief, her fear slightly reduced.
With four people, their sense of security and courage increased significantly.
"Have you been hiding here? Do you know who did this?" Tang Sanli pointed to the two or three dozen mutilated bodies, which he was very concerned about.
The fat woman shook her head and retched on the side. She had already vomited many times from the terrifying scenes she had seen, and her stomach was now empty.
The bald young man licked his lips and said, "We just ran here..."
He had a stronger adaptability than the fat woman. Although he had vomited at first, he had now become somewhat accustomed to the sight of internal organs and brains, and wouldn't vomit anymore.
Chunan frowned and said, "Let's leave this place first."
The fat woman, who was retching, quickly said, "Let's find a place to hide. When it's light, rescue teams will surely come. This place... it's too strange... there are... zombies..." She shivered, her face full of fear, instinctively gripping the police baton tighter.
Tang Sanli's eyes darted around, but he had other thoughts. He didn't want to stay and wait for the rescue teams.
He had been caught for drug trafficking, and with the large amount of drugs seized, he would likely face a sentence of ten to twenty years, or even life or death row. The earthquake had destroyed the entire detention center, causing numerous deaths. If he could escape now, he wouldn't want to be found by the rescue teams.
If not for the terrifying undead, he would have already fled.
"No, staying here is waiting to die. If you want to stay, stay alone. We're leaving, get out of this cursed place," Tang Sanli immediately interrupted the fat woman, turning to leave.
Chunan nodded, still shaken by the strange and horrific dead bodies, and also wanted to leave.
The bald young man hurried to follow, and the fat woman, after a moment of hesitation, had no choice but to follow. She couldn't bear to stay alone for the night.
Just as the fat woman took a step, she suddenly felt something furry touch her shoulder.
Startled, she screamed and instinctively turned around.
She saw a dog's face covered in yellow fur, with eyes glowing with a faint bloodlight, and then a large mouth opened.
With a "snap," the large mouth bit into the fat woman's throat, tearing off a large piece of flesh. Her throat became a bloody hole, and blood spurted out like a fountain.
Chunan, Tang Sanli, and the bald young man, who were walking ahead, suddenly heard the fat woman's scream and turned around to see a common yellow rural dog, its front paws on the fat woman's shoulders.
The fat woman turned around, and the dog's mouth bit into her throat, tearing it open. She screamed, and a bloody hole appeared on her neck.
This scene made Chunan, Tang Sanli, and the bald young man's hearts tighten. Just as they were about to turn to save the fat woman, the dog opened its mouth again, biting into her neck and tearing it off. Her head rolled to the ground, blood seeping from her seven orifices, her eyes wide open with fear and disbelief, not closing even in death.
The dog had torn off the fat woman's neck in two bites, which required immense strength. Chunan, Tang Sanli, and the bald young man were chilled to the bone. The dog, with the headless body of the fat woman, leaped into the air, several meters, and pounced toward Chunan, Tang Sanli, and the bald young man.
"Ah—"
Chunan shouted, grabbing the steel bar with a piece of concrete and swinging it at the dog.
Chunan had always liked animals and later became a veterinarian, treating countless pets. But now, he couldn't afford any mercy. If he hesitated, he might be the next to die.
Tang Sanli also swung the police baton fiercely.
The bald young man, with no weapon, immediately turned to run.
Two bites to kill the fat woman, this was no ordinary rural dog, but a monster.
Like the dead people, this dog had also turned into a monster.
Chunan and Tang Sanli swung their steel bar and baton, and the dog seemed to be cautious. The bald young man ran in the other direction, and the dog, landing, suddenly leaped to the side, avoiding Chunan and Tang Sanli's attacks and chasing after the bald young man.
Clearly, the fleeing bald young man had attracted it, and compared to the unarmed young man, the weapons in Chunan and Tang Sanli's hands posed a threat.
This time, Chunan noticed that the dog was missing an ear.
"Go," Tang Sanli growled at Chunan, his eyes filled with fear, and turned to run in the other direction.
Chunan hesitated for a moment but finally followed Tang Sanli.
He didn't have the courage to help the fleeing bald young man alone.
