"So, what exactly does helping people entail?"
The day after summoning Focarol.
Since it was already late, I had them leave and summoned them again the next morning.
"Hmm, let's go to the lower town first."
So, the three of us—me, Focarol, and Orbus—decided to take a carriage to the lower town.
Incidentally, it's a school holiday today, so we can move around freely from morning.
"This is my first time going to the lower town," Orbus suddenly said in the carriage.
"Yeah, you usually don't leave the noble district, do you?"
Here—in the Diter Magic City State—the places where people live are divided between magicians and non-magicians.
The area where magicians live is the noble district.
The area where others live is called the lower town.
My house is technically on the outskirts of the noble district.
The magic school is in the noble district, so I rarely leave it unless I have a special reason.
"So, what are we going to do in this lower town?"
"Well, it'll be a surprise when we get there."
So, the carriage headed for the lower town.
"Here is our destination."
What he showed us was, well, a completely ordinary building.
"What is this place?"
"Well, you'll see when we go inside."
It's faster to show you than to explain.
"Oh, right. Could you both materialize before getting off the carriage?"
So, both of them materialized.
Orbus transformed from a centaur into a dandy-looking human.
When Focarol materialized, her gargoyle wings disappeared.
Then, we entered the building.
"Ugh, it smells like alcohol in here," Focarol said as soon as we entered.
Indeed, the moment we stepped in, the smell of alcohol hit our noses.
Looking around, burly men were holding mugs of alcohol and making a ruckus.
It was still daytime, yet they were already this rowdy.
Since it was my first time entering, I couldn't help but be surprised by the scene.
"Hey, kid! This isn't a place for snot-nosed brats like you! Get out of here quickly!"
"I'm a magician," I replied.
"Huh? A magician, huh? That means you're a noble. I don't like nobles."
"Hey, you! I consider that an insult to the master! Even if the kind-hearted master forgives you, I won't!"
"Hey, you, are you up for a fight?"
Orbus and the man glared at each other.
Then, the other men at the other tables shouted, "A fight's starting!" and gathered around.
"Orbus, don't overdo it."
I gave that instruction and headed to the counter. A receptionist was standing there.
"I'm here for the first time and would like to register as an adventurer."
"I heard your conversation. You're a magician, right?"
"Yes, that's right."
"What about her?"
"Um, yes... She's a magician too."
I answered for Focarol, who was at a loss for words.
Since she can use magic, it's better to register her as a magician.
"What about the man fighting over there?"
"He's a, um, martial artist."
If Orbus had weapons, he would be a swordsman or a spearman, but since he doesn't, I registered him as a martial artist.
"So, what exactly is this place?"
"Can't you tell?"
"I can't."
"This is the Adventurer's Guild."
"The Adventurer's Guild...?"
"Basically, it's a place where people help others."
"Your registration is complete."
The receptionist at the counter said this while we were talking.
"Here are your guild cards. There are three of them."
"Thank you."
I said this and took the three guild cards.
"Everyone starts at E-rank, and your rank increases as you complete quests."
"Understood."
Since this is the only time we'll be working as adventurers, our rank won't go up.
Nobles, or magicians, in the Diter Magic City State aren't very interested in the Adventurer's Guild.
Some even consider it barbaric.
Only extremely poor magicians might work as adventurers to earn money.
At the guild's bulletin board, there were various requests.
From monster hunting to finding lost dogs, the content varied widely.
So, we came to the Adventurer's Guild to take on a request and help people.
The request that matched our purpose was:
"There it is."
I said this and picked up a request. It read, "Escort a cart."
Looking around, I saw that Orbus and the men he was fighting with were now drinking together.
What are they doing while I wasn't looking?
"Hey, let's go, Orbus."
"Yes, Master! I'm all ready!"
Orbus, who said this, smelled of alcohol.
Is he really okay?
But I decided to take him along anyway.
I would be grateful for your feedback.
