Chapter 22

Facing the impending army of Portland, the merchants in the town were in a state of panic. Some were wailing and wringing their hands, trying to sell off their soon-to-be-unsold goods at a discount to convert them into coins and leave the place.
Those who controlled the food, medicine, and weapons and armor were overjoyed, drastically raising their prices to take advantage of the impending chaos and make a substantial profit.
Compared to the merchants who were profiting from the chaos, the common people of the town were leaving with their families, carrying their household items, and fleeing in groups along the roads outside the town to reach Lian City, dozens of kilometers away. There, the walls were higher, and there were more soldiers, making it much safer than the front-line town of Cedar.
"Sir, respected knight, could you escort us to Lian City? I will offer one gold coin as a reward."
A plump merchant, dressed in a luxurious robe, saw Lin默 and his two companions, his eyes almost glowing. His short legs moved quickly, pushing through the crowd to rush in front of Lin默.
Draped in dark heavy knight armor, with a large bow and a two-handed knight sword crossed on his back, the knight leading a tall black horse was a striking presence on the street.
"Get lost!"
Lin默 frowned. He detested these merchants who hoarded goods and raised prices, finding the stench of copper on them repulsive.
"Two gold coins! Just for this trip, you can earn these two gold coins!"
The fat merchant was not giving up. Through the equipment, he could roughly guess the strength of the other party, who must be a very powerful knight. Having such a warrior as an escort would greatly increase the safety of the merchant caravan, and he might even charge other merchants who wanted protection a high fee.
"What, you miser, do you think you can get the protection of this knight with just two gold coins? Dream on! I'll offer four gold coins! Sir knight, if we reach Lian City, I will certainly offer you a generous gift."
Clearly, Lin默 was not seen by just this one merchant. More and more merchants realized something.
"I'll offer ten gold coins! Double the gift!"
"You bastards, you're insulting the honor of the knight! I'll offer fifty gold coins!"
"Fifty gold coins? Are you crazy? That amount of money is enough to hire a hundred-man regular army to escort you to Lian City."
"Do you think a hundred-man squad can compare to this knight? Fine, sixty gold coins."
"I'll offer a hundred gold coins, begging for the knight's protection. The Hayes family will remember your kindness."
Clearly, the wealthy in Cedar Town were not just the local lord's family, the Bart family. Some influential families in the town also had a significant demand for strong protection.
More and more people surged towards Lin默, offering increasingly higher prices for his protection. Just as these unscrupulous merchants raised their prices during the chaos, gold and silver coins were far less valuable than their lives.
As long as they were alive, they could spend money. If they were dead, everything was gone. Their wives would become others', their money would fill others' pockets, their property deeds would change to others' names, and their children would be mercilessly driven out of their homes, wandering the streets...
Despite their greed and stinginess, the merchants still shouted out their offers.
The expression of the dragon knight inside the "Dragon General" tactical helmet grew colder.
Behind him, the Gemini sisters raised their 95-type automatic rifles, pulled the bolts, and began to scan the surroundings with the black muzzles, ready to deal with any sudden situations.
The black stallion gifted by the Bart family pawed the ground restlessly, snorted, and its hind legs twitched, ready to kick anyone who dared to approach from behind, giving them a taste of what it means to be kicked and flown through the air.
The black stallion seemed to dislike too many people approaching, as it made it feel insecure.
"Scram!"
With the surging combat aura, Lin默's roar was like a thunderclap, making the surrounding people dizzy and their blood boil, causing them to retreat in unison.
The surface of the "Dragon General" tactical armor was enveloped in surging light flames, a show of force!
If he didn't give these lowlifes a taste of his power, they wouldn't know the might of the dragon knight. These greedy merchants would dare to take advantage of any opportunity.
"My God, it's combat aura! What powerful combat aura!"
"Indeed, a powerful knight. Which family does he belong to?"
"You fools, how dare you anger the knight? You're courting death, look at what you've done!"
"The knight is angry, back off, you damned fools, why are you crowding so close? Do you want to die?"
The effect was immediate. The people who had gathered around turned pale and retreated one by one. At this moment, if they were killed by this powerful knight, it would be a waste of a life. No one was willing to risk angering him and rush to their death.
One roar made these money-grubbing merchants and town gentry realize the reality. This powerful knight would never accept their employment.
The crowd, intimidated, scattered immediately, as their lives were more important.
"Charlie!"
Free from these copper-stinking fellows, Lin默 breathed a sigh of relief and saw a familiar figure in the crowd.
Several town guard soldiers were beating a young man. As a member of the town guard, Three-Eyes Charlie was certainly not the one being beaten.
He was almost unrecognizable from yesterday, holding a spear and kicking the unfortunate man on the ground.
"Hey! Morin, uh, Sir Morin, you haven't left yet?"
Three-Eyes Charlie, hearing someone call him, turned and saw Lin默 and his companions, immediately stopping his actions and waving at them.
He was not surprised by Lin默's attire; the heavy knight armor signified strength, and not just anyone could wear such top-tier gear.
"I want to see what I can do for the town. After all, this was once my hometown. What are you doing? Why are you beating him?"
Lin默 and the Gemini sisters walked over.
The chaos in the town was completely unexpected. Without the Bart family's restraint, the town guard, lacking in numbers and experience, could not control the situation. Surprisingly, Three-Eyes Charlie and some of the town guard soldiers were still doing their best to maintain order, though it was like a drop in the bucket for a town with thousands of households.
"He's a damned thief, an outsider, who dared to steal from the Filas sisters' house."
Three-Eyes Charlie, still wearing his old leather armor and holding a spear with a barely sharpened tip, turned and roared, "Keep beating him!"
The beating continued. The town guard knew that Charlie had a thing for the Filas sisters, and this thief had dared to steal from his crush. It was a death wish, both publicly and privately.
Although the town guard was not very strong, they were more than enough to deal with this powerless thief.
"Look, in the sky, my God, what is that! Three-Eyes, Three-Eyes, you bastard, look! Something is flying over, it's a big one!"
A shrill scream echoed from a distance.
"It's Terry!"
Charlie and the other soldiers immediately looked up at the sky. The archer, who boasted of having eyes like a black-feathered eagle, must have seen something.
"What is it? One, two, three, four, there are four!"
"It's a dragon! It's a dragon knight!"
"Idiot, that's not a dragon, that's not a dragon knight, it's a flying dragon knight!"
"Portland's flying dragon knights! The Portlanders are here! Run!"
The panic-stricken people's fear reached a critical point, and they suddenly started shouting, running around like headless flies. The already crumbling town immediately lost all control.
"Morin, Morin, let's find a place to hide."
Three-Eyes Charlie's legs started to tremble, and his speech became involuntarily stammered, even with a real dragon knight by his side.
But he knew that his childhood friend's dragon was on a "vacation" in the sky city, and distant water could not quench a nearby fire.
