"Good heavens! Those damn dragon riders were actually taken down!"
"We drove the Portlanders away, long live the Empire! Long live!"
"Long live the knight!"
The once fearful and anxious Cedar Town was now a sea of joy, with cheers echoing everywhere. People came out of their houses, onto the streets, laughing heartily and leaping with joy, as if they had personally driven away the invaders.
Although one dragon rider had escaped, for this small town on the eastern border of the empire, it was still a remarkable victory.
A sharp whistle was heard, and the sound of crisp hooves came quickly from the distance.
A black stallion, as if covered in black velvet, squeezed through the crowd on the street, trotting up to the dragon rider. It snorted and affectionately nudged its head against its rider.
"Hmm, good job, this time you did well!"
Lin Mo patted the long nose of the black stallion, scratching its slender neck as encouragement, then began to lead it by the reins towards the town's mill.
The performance of this warhorse surprised him; facing four dragons, it showed only some unease, but not the terror he had expected.
"Hey, Sir Dragon Knight Morin, are you satisfied now? We only have less than four magazines of bullets left. Every shot we use is one less, and soon these two rifles will be nothing but scrap iron."
Twin sister Li Mubing, walking through the crowd, raised the 95-style automatic assault rifle in her hand.
She and her sister could neither use martial qi nor magic; their means of survival in this world were these two automatic rifles and other weapons.
Modern military equipment, though powerful, is highly dependent on ammunition.
It's easy to imagine that once the twins used their last bullet, their combat ability would be only slightly better than that of ordinary people. A fourth-rank warrior could easily take them down, after all, in this world where martial prowess is revered, martial skills, magic, and other powerful forces are the guarantees of power and survival.
If they were powerless, these twin sisters would soon become playthings of the powerful, without a doubt.
This pressure from the threat to their survival and means of self-preservation is also why Li Mubing was unwilling to get involved in trouble.
"These are not problems. I can teach you martial qi or magic. Of course, I have some friends who are powerful warriors and can also teach you how to survive in this world."
Having lived two lives (or perhaps it could be said this way), Lin Mo naturally understood Li Mubing's underlying meaning. Although her sister Li Muxin didn't say anything, it was clear that this was also what she was worried about.
"Really? Don't lie to me! Uh, you have a history of it!"
Li Mubing showed surprise at first, but then quickly became wary. Martial skills were fine; Chinese martial arts also have many powerful combat techniques. Magic, on the other hand, was quite amazing, and the opportunity to learn it would be excellent.
"Sister, don't be fooled by these. Wisdom is our true weapon!"
Her sister Li Muxin pointed to her head and began to educate her impulsive younger sister.
"Can we try it? It looks fun."
Li Mubing started to pout, pulling on her sister's arm. Without the responsibilities of a soldier, she now seemed more like a normal, playful teenage girl, free from the vigilance, seriousness, and coldness of her profession.
"But don't get too excited. Whether it's martial qi or magic, you need to be tested for your talent and elemental affinity to determine if you can learn these special skills."
Lin Mo's words were like a preemptive warning and a cold splash of water.
If not, wouldn't the streets be full of mages and swordsmen, or other skill users? If he didn't have a four-star affinity for light elements, he might still be a homeless wanderer in Cedar Town or buried somewhere unknown.
"Morin, oh my, you actually took down three dragon riders, that's amazing."
Three-eyed Charlie squeezed through the crowd from somewhere.
The news had already spread throughout the town: a knight in black heavy armor had killed and driven away the Portlanders' dragon riders, saving Cedar Town.
"This is what I should do."
Lin Mo shook his head. He saw the civilians around him, whether merchants, farmers, or craftsmen, all looking at him with admiration, as if he had become everyone's hope and savior.
However, as a member of the Imperial Royal Dragon Riders, he was already used to such looks.
"Right, an Imperial dragon knight."
Charlie grinned, and the small crisis in Cedar Town had greatly improved his mood.
The town guard, despite their shortcomings, still considered themselves the protectors of Cedar Town. Seeing this scene, the soldiers who remained on duty felt very proud.
For small people, even a little opportunity can make them stand out.
"Don't get too excited, the Portlanders' vanguard is about to arrive."
Lin Mo glanced at the people celebrating and the town guard soldiers. They were only focused on their immediate safety and had forgotten the greater danger that was coming.
The appearance of the dragon rider squad meant that the Portlanders' main army was not far away. Cedar Town could not avoid this military disaster.
Lin Mo and the twin sisters had taken out most of the "Flash Spirit" dragon squad, but they had also made the Portlanders their enemies, putting the entire town at risk of the Portlanders' wrath.
This was an unavoidable situation. If they had let the four dragon riders continue to wreak havoc, many people in the town might have died.
"Uh, yes, yes!"
Three-eyed Charlie's face turned pale, his fingers gripping the rough spear whitened, and sweat immediately broke out on his forehead.
The town guard soldiers looked at each other, having momentarily forgotten that the Portlanders' army was just outside the town, ready to launch an attack at any moment.
"Charlie, find some influential people and hold a meeting! Also, find some woodcutters and hunters familiar with the terrain outside the town; I need their help."
Without any authorization, Lin Mo began to give orders to the town guard. Surprisingly, the town guard soldiers, led by Charlie, obeyed the dragon knight without hesitation and began to carry out his orders.
In a relatively intact inn, a large table in front of Lin Mo was covered with a white cotton cloth. On it, the twin sisters had drawn a crude map based on the descriptions of the terrain outside the town from the woodcutters and hunters.
In addition to Lin Mo and the twin sisters, there were other influential people in the town, such as the tax collector Mado, the fur and herb merchant Usig, the old blacksmith Asun, and the town guard captain, a fourth-rank swordsman, Brando, who had a sour expression.
The latter was somewhat resentful about being arbitrarily stripped of his authority by the dragon knight, but he dared not speak up. He was fourth-rank, while the dragon knight was ninth-rank. To put it bluntly, the dragon knight could kill him with a single fart.
"The purpose of calling you all here, I'm sure you can guess."
Lin Mo glanced at the four guests gathered around the table and continued, "Cedar Town is destined to fall. I want to know, do you want a massacre that chases us for dozens of miles, or a retreat with limited casualties?"
The twin sisters stood behind him, armed and ready to support him.
The young, flower-like girls exuded a solemn and intimidating aura, which, combined with the dragon knight's black heavy armor, made the atmosphere in the inn particularly heavy.
The map on the table surprised the four guests. The new, still wrinkled white cotton cloth showed that it had just been drawn. Although not very detailed, it clearly displayed the positions of Cedar Town and the surrounding geographical environment.
