Chapter 16: Intuition

5 min read1,207 words

17:30 PM.

Third Seventh Beast High School dismissal.

At 17:33, a large group of students, in twos and threes, walked out of the school gate.

"Are we going to do it here?" a slightly deep voice sounded.

Qiao Sang, who had been reading a book for nearly an hour, finally waited for the first person to ask.

She looked up and saw a tall, burly figure standing in front of her. A snake-like beast pet, as thick as a fist and colored earth yellow, coiled around his waist, its triangular head visible at his neck.

It was a Longtail Snake, the evolved form of a Shorttail Snake.

Qiao Sang glanced at it twice, then took out a pen from her backpack and added a few words to the paper.

[Only for初级宠兽]

The tall man clicked his tongue and left without saying much more.

With the first one came the second, and soon another person arrived.

This time, it was a sunny-looking boy who came to Qiao Sang, scratched his head, and said somewhat bashfully, "If I win, can I have your contact information instead of money?"

Qiao Sang replied straightforwardly, "Sure."

Not wanting money was even better. Her total assets amounted to only 532 League Coins, enough for her to lose a few rounds, and she still needed to save some for the return trip.

Beside the boy stood a spiky-haired friend with a look of amusement, clearly his companion.

"Let's go over there." The spiky-haired boy pointed to a poplar tree in Nanhe Park and suggested.

They were currently at the entrance and exit of Nanhe Park, where people were coming and going after school, making it an unsuitable place for a battle.

Qiao Sang looked in the direction he pointed and nodded.

The three of them went to the poplar tree, where the surroundings were secluded, and no one was within about 20 meters.

"I'll be the referee." The spiky-haired boy volunteered.

Qiao Sang had no objections.

The boy made a summoning gesture, and a plump pigeon, about 80 centimeters tall and brown all over, appeared on the ground from a white star array.

Ordinary plump pigeons are usually around 60 centimeters tall, but this one was clearly well-cultivated.

"Jiang Liu, no objections to letting the girl go first, right?" the spiky-haired boy asked.

Different matches have different rules; some decide who attacks first before the match, while others don't care who makes the first move.

"Of course." Jiang Liu shrugged and replied.

The spiky-haired boy, as the referee, chose Qiao Sang to go first. Qiao Sang didn't hesitate and said, "Fire Fang, use Spark."

"Fang!"

Fire Fang jumped out of Qiao Sang's arms, its eyes instantly sharp, and it released a small, orange-red flame from its mouth, about the size of a baby's fist.

Facing this sudden attack, Jiang Liu didn't give any commands. The plump pigeon remained calm and, just as the spark was about to hit it, jumped to the left to avoid it.

Plump pigeons are known for their slow speed, and this one wasn't fast either. However, its reaction was good, and it avoided the attack with minimal movement, indicating targeted training.

Qiao Sang analyzed the situation but didn't stop giving commands, "Tackle."

Fire Fang charged forward with all its might.

"Fly up and use Howl." Jiang Liu issued his first command.

The plump pigeon flapped its short wings and flew up.

Fire Fang, without training, wasn't fast enough. By the time it reached halfway, the plump pigeon was already in the air.

"Pigeon!"

Howl is a relatively common skill that doesn't directly cause damage in battle but can momentarily affect the opponent.

To Qiao Sang, the sound was just a bit harsh, but Fire Fang's movements paused, and its speed slowed slightly.

"Air Slash." Jiang Liu followed up with another command.

Air Slash is a flying-type pet's exclusive skill, similar to a ground pet's Tackle. The difference is that Tackle relies solely on the pet's physical strength, while Air Slash can use air currents to generate a much stronger impact.

The plump pigeon's wings pulled back, and a gust of wind surrounded it, rushing straight toward Fire Fang.

Fire Fang instinctively wanted to dodge as the plump pigeon approached.

"Don't move!" Qiao Sang commanded at this moment.

Being hit by Air Slash would definitely cause significant damage, but Fire Fang, hearing Qiao Sang's command, controlled its body and obeyed her.

This was outrageous!

The spiky-haired boy, watching the scene, widened his eyes.

Both Qiao Sang's command and Fire Fang's reaction seemed outrageous to him.

Leaving aside the command, how obedient could a Fire Fang be?

If it were a second or third contracted pet, it would be understandable, but this was clearly a new beastmaster's first pet.

Out of a thousand new beastmasters, it's hard to find one who contracts a fire-type pet. In their school of over 3,000 students, only two people dared to contract a fire-type pet as their first.

Fire-type pets are known for their temperamental and uncontrollable nature.

How did she make a fire-type pet stand still and take a beating?

If it weren't for the ongoing battle, the spiky-haired boy would have run over to ask this fierce girl for advice.

"Right now, jump!"

Qiao Sang calmly observed the situation and issued the command just as the plump pigeon was about to collide with Fire Fang.

Fire Fang didn't hesitate and leaped up the moment Qiao Sang gave the command.

Jiang Liu was stunned by the scene.

How did the Fire Fang...

How did it jump onto the plump pigeon's back!

"Fire Fang, attack its wings!" Qiao Sang gave the next command while the opponent was still reacting.

Fire Fang bared its fangs, and flames immediately enveloped them. It bit down mercilessly on the plump pigeon's right wing.

"Pigeon!!!"

The plump pigeon let out a painful cry and fell heavily to the ground after the scream.

"Ah Pang!" Jiang Liu exclaimed.

Fire Fang jumped off the plump pigeon and turned to look at Qiao Sang, its eyes filled with excitement.

"Finally, Spark." Qiao Sang said calmly.

Fire Fang quickly turned back.

Under the attack of the spark, the plump pigeon let out a whimper and fainted.

Silence filled the air.

After about five seconds.

"Fierce... classmate, what's your name?" the spiky-haired boy asked awkwardly.

"My name is Qiao Sang." Qiao Sang replied.

"Qiao Sang wins." The spiky-haired boy announced the final result.

Jiang Liu silently returned the plump pigeon to his beast dictionary.

"How did you time it to make Fire Fang jump onto the plump pigeon's back?" Jiang Liu walked over, his expression complex.

The girl in front of him looked younger than him, yet her battle awareness was so strong.

Calculating the jump time under the speed of Air Slash wasn't easy.

If the plump pigeon was too close to Fire Fang, it wouldn't have been in time. This required calculating the plump pigeon's speed.

And Fire Fang, if it had hesitated for even half a second, it wouldn't have made it onto the plump pigeon's back.

All of this was based on trust and command from the beastmaster.

Qiao Sang replied seriously, "It was intuition."
