Chapter 49, Part 5: I Am a Medical Student (4)

“Haa… Haa… Haa….”
Yang Sun-jae was bent over, panting heavily.
Was it because he had retired from active duty at the hospital and was getting older?
After performing CPR for about two rounds, his entire body felt like it was falling apart. It seemed as if he was drenched in sweat rather than rain.
His breath reeked of fatigue.
“Can't you press down properly? Press harder! Hard enough to make the patient's body bounce!”
Yang Sun-jae bellowed, squeezing out the last of his strength.
It had been 10 minutes since he handed the patients from the black car to Eum Ma-eum and started treating the patients from the white car.
Both of the patients he was responsible for were conscious, but one was suspected of having a cervical fracture and hypovolemic shock, while the other was suspected of having a spinal fracture and head trauma.
Yang Sun-jae rushed to provide emergency care.
He fitted the first patient with a stabilizer to prevent movement in the neck fracture area.
He tightly wrapped the abdomen, which was bleeding, with a bandage to stop the initial bleeding, and applied indirect pressure above the wound for secondary hemostasis.
He bandaged the head of the second patient.
He had the students hold the patient's waist to prevent it from moving side to side.
A few minutes ago, it seemed like the treatment would go smoothly.
It looked like all that was left was for the ambulance to arrive and transport the patients.
However, that was just a delusion of Yang Sun-jae.
The patient suspected of having hypovolemic shock suddenly stopped breathing. It was a case of H.A (Heart Arrest, cardiac arrest) due to shock.
There was no time to measure anything.
Yang Sun-jae knelt on the cold road and started compressing the patient's chest, then began artificial respiration.
The problem was his physical condition.
His body, not what it used to be, was holding him back from performing CPR.
So, in a last-ditch effort, he taught the assisting student how to perform chest compressions on the spot.
Perhaps because of the emergency, the student was terrified.
The student's CPR was far from effective.
It was more like a cat pressing down lightly, rather than compressing the patient's chest.
Of course, such a half-hearted chest compression would not satisfy Yang Sun-jae.
“P… Professor, if I press harder, the patient might get hurt…”
The student mumbled, as if making an excuse.
Although the new student participating in the orientation didn't know much, Yang Sun-jae couldn't help but feel frustrated.
Wasn't someone dying right in front of him?
“Hey, get out of the way!”
Just as he was about to take over from the student performing chest compressions, something suddenly appeared in front of Yang Sun-jae.
It was Eum Ma-eum.
Yang Sun-jae was taken aback by the unexpected appearance.
“Professor, I'll perform the CPR.”
“What about the other patients?”
Yang Sun-jae asked in an unintentionally harsh tone.
He had entrusted the other scene to Eum Ma-eum, who seemed reliable, but now he was here to help?
The speed and quality of his treatment and care were suspicious and unsettling.
“The treatment is already done. From now on, please leave it to me.”
Regardless of Yang Sun-jae's doubts, Eum Ma-eum took his place in front of the patient's chest and began chest compressions.
Thud! Thud! Thud!
Each time Eum Ma-eum pressed the patient's chest with his interlocked hands, the patient's upper body bounced.
The isosceles triangle formed by his extended arms.
His palms never left the patient's chest.
The rhythmic compressions at a rate of 100 per minute.
Eum Ma-eum's chest compressions were on par with those of a competent cardiology resident.
‘This is unbelievable. How is this possible? ’
Yang Sun-jae couldn't believe what he was seeing with his own eyes.
Not only were Eum Ma-eum's chest compressions already perfect, but his boldness in offering to perform them was also impressive.
“Haa… Haa… Haa… Hey, the guy with the cap, there's an Ambu bag in the bus luggage compartment. Can you bring it here?”
“Ambu bag?”
“It's an airbag made of rubber. You'll know it when you see it. It's often seen in medical dramas.”
“Oh… Got it.”
A moment later, the student who received Eum Ma-eum's instructions returned with the Ambu bag.
Yang Sun-jae was even more shocked by the fact that Eum Ma-eum already knew what an Ambu bag was and where it was in the luggage compartment.
What kind of guy is this kid?
“Put the mask on the patient's face… and squeeze the airbag.”
Even while performing chest compressions and panting, Eum Ma-eum calmly gave instructions.
The person in control of the situation was undoubtedly Eum Ma-eum.
“You're doing well… The patient's chest is moving, and the mask is fogging up. It's proof that oxygen is getting in properly.”
He couldn't believe that Eum Ma-eum even knew the correct way to use the Ambu bag.
Yang Sun-jae felt as if he had been hit hard on the back of the head, leaving him dazed.
After about 5 minutes of CPR using chest compressions and the Ambu bag, the patient's consciousness gradually returned.
The eyelids, which seemed like they would never open, began to flutter, and the patient's pupils became visible.
Wheee.
Wheee.
A moment later, the siren of an ambulance, like a savior, loudly echoed through the road.
With the emergency treatment of the traffic accident complete, all that was left was to transport the patients to the hospital.
Yang Sun-jae could finally release the tension that had been building up.
“Good job. Everyone, go inside and rest.”
He gently placed his hand on the shoulder of the panting Eum Ma-eum.
The hero of this traffic accident treatment was not himself but Eum Ma-eum.
He had treated the patients from the black car alone and then came to help him.
‘This is really unbelievable…’
He wanted to ask Eum Ma-eum about the source of his extraordinary treatment skills and medical knowledge, but he managed to hold back.
The time, place, and situation were all wrong.
“Kids, help Eum Ma-eum take the patients to the bus.”
“Yes, Professor.”
After watching Eum Ma-eum leave, Yang Sun-jae explained the situation to the 119 rescue team.
He was a professor in charge of the medical school orientation and had provided initial emergency care upon discovering the traffic accident.
“It's raining, and you've really done a great job. We'll transport them to the nearest hospital as quickly as possible.”
“It's nothing. I just did what I had to do.”
While talking to the 119 rescue team, Yang Sun-jae glanced at the patient being loaded onto the stretcher.
It was the patient Eum Ma-eum had treated.
Yang Sun-jae's eyes widened in amazement.
The treatment for the patient with an open femur fracture was perfect.
The tightly wrapped bandage around the wound and the splint firmly placed below the knee.
Well, you meet all kinds of freshmen in life.
Yang Sun-jae secretly whistled in admiration.
* * *
At the condominium where the orientation was taking place.
“Phew, I feel like I'm alive again.”
I muttered to myself as I came out of the bathroom in the dorm room I was assigned to.
Washing my wet body with hot water and changing into clean clothes made me feel incredibly light.
But what made me even happier was the fact that I had prevented the tragedy that occurred in my previous life.
In my previous life, I was just a bystander in this incident.
Even though a traffic accident had occurred, I didn't get off the bus, and of course, I didn't help with the treatment.
Of course, that wasn't wrong.
A medical student is not a doctor.
Especially a fresh, inexperienced medical student who hasn't even completed the orientation.
So, it was natural to freeze and be terrified when a traffic accident emergency occurred.
Still, the experience of helplessly watching a patient die in my previous life was far from pleasant.
That shocking scene created a shadow of helplessness in my previous life.
I can't do anything.
Even if I try, it won't work.
Such feelings of self-abandonment were deeply ingrained.
But in this life, I successfully saved the patient and shook off that shadow.
Now, I can do anything and save any patient.
Thanks to the regression, I am growing both as a person and as a doctor.
“How are you feeling? Are you better?”
I looked at Shin Cheol-woo, who was lying on the bed.
Shin Cheol-woo, who had been suffering from motion sickness, suddenly sat up.
“Feeling a bit better now. The nausea is gone, but there's still a slight dizziness.”
“You talk so much about the brain, but you're helpless against motion sickness?”
“Everyone's brain has its weaknesses. Even the great Einstein couldn't accept quantum mechanics.”
“What does Einstein and quantum mechanics have to do with your motion sickness?”
Shin Cheol-woo's four-dimensional way of speaking was so absurd that I snorted and asked.
“Wouldn't it be boring if I told you? Figuring out the connection between those three things is the homework I'm giving you today.”
“Damn.”
I chuckled and sat on the bed.
With the memories of my previous life, Shin Cheol-woo will undoubtedly become an excellent neurosurgeon.
Building a good relationship now will definitely make him a great colleague.
But why does talking to Shin Cheol-woo make me feel like my memories are wrong?
Is this weirdo really going to become a renowned neurosurgeon?
“By the way, you did a great job with the treatment earlier.”
Shin Cheol-woo brought up the traffic accident that had happened a few hours ago.
“Weren't you on the bus because of motion sickness?”
I tilted my head and asked.
“Actually, the opposite. I got off the bus because of motion sickness. I thought about helping you, but I decided to just watch the situation. I couldn't even control my own body, so how could I help anyone?”
“I see.”
“Your treatment skills already seem like a doctor's. What's going on?”
Shin Cheol-woo's question was understandable.
Anyone could see that my performance was suspicious.
In my past life, I would have lied convincingly to get out of this situation, but now it was different.
I had decided not to hide my abilities now that I was in medical school. There was no reason or need to do so.
“I… I'm a genius. I wanted to become a doctor, so I studied medical textbooks on my own since high school.”
“Studying medical textbooks while preparing for the college entrance exam?”
“Yeah.”
“Wow… You must be one of the few geniuses in Korea. It's an honor to be talking to you.”
“Are you being sarcastic?”
“I'm not being sarcastic or using irony. I'm genuinely impressed.”
Shin Cheol-woo spoke calmly.
“Speaking of which, I'm curious about your brain structure…”
“You brain-obsessed lunatic. Stop talking nonsense.”
“Hey, can't you tell the difference between a joke and a serious question? Is our relationship that shallow?”
“We just met today.”
“The brain can initiate chemical and neural reactions in seconds, not days.”
Seeing that Shin Cheol-woo was about to start his four-dimensional speech again, I shut my mouth.
Damn, should I have chosen Im Ho instead of Shin Cheol-woo?
It would be terrifying to hear this kind of talk not only in medical school but also in the hospital.
After a moment of contemplation, I decided to learn more about Shin Cheol-woo.
I didn't know much about him.
All I knew was that he would become an excellent neurosurgeon in the future.
If I got to know Shin Cheol-woo better as a person, I might be able to understand the roots of his four-dimensional speech.
Knock. Knock. Knock.
Just as I was about to have a deep conversation, there was a knock on the door.
When I told them to come in, a girl with a squirrel-like appearance peeked through the door.
“Hey… Is Eum Ma-eum in this room?”
“What's up?”
“Professor Yang Sun-jae is looking for you in the dorm. He's in room 702.”
“I'll go right away.”
With a sense of inevitability, I left the room.
After confirming the girl's face, I froze.
Was I too exhausted from the traffic accident treatment?
I had completely forgotten that another tragedy would occur during the orientation.
The girl in front of me, Nam Chorong.
She was going to die tonight.
