Ding Yi and Liao Shizhong sat beside Xiao Diao's body, panting heavily. Liao Shizhong had been struck by another sword and was too weak to get up.
"You didn't need to take that hit," Ding Yi said.
Liao Shizhong smiled, "I had to save you some strength. This is just the beginning. I'm already injured, so I won't be much help in the upcoming battles."
"It's the same for me," Ding Yi sighed. "If Commander Zuo loses, the people who follow will be far beyond our ability to handle."
"Will Commander Zuo lose?" Liao Shizhong asked.
Ding Yi fell silent. Commander Zuo was their war god, but Li Zhi was a renowned master. Moreover, Commander Zuo had been overexerted these past few days.
"I don't understand why this happened," Liao Shizhong said after a moment. "It was supposed to be an ambush, but why did we end up being ambushed?"
Both fell silent.
"The Western Border Army is finished. Now, only Qin Feng and his Death Corps remain," Ding Yi said gloomily. "I hope they can survive and carry on the legacy of the Western Border Army. In the future, they won't forget us."
"Under a fallen nest, how can there be intact eggs? The Death Corps only has two thousand men. What can they do against the Western Qin's attack? I fear Qin Feng is too stubborn and will keep moving forward in the Luoying Mountains, eventually falling into the hands of the Western Qin." Liao Shizhong sighed.
"Qin Feng is a cunning fox. If he senses danger, he'll run faster than a rabbit," Ding Yi smiled.
"I used to hate him so much, sometimes wishing to slice him into pieces. Now, I just hope he survives," Liao Shizhong suddenly laughed. "That bastard is truly despicable."
"Still hate him for beating you up back then? Who told you to provoke him?" Ding Yi laughed. "But it's true, you were just recruited and didn't know his reputation."
"That guy is really brutal," Liao Shizhong thought of how Qin Feng had dealt with Yang Zhi before the battle and couldn't help but smile. "He's ruthless and heartless."
"If he weren't ruthless and heartless, how could he survive in the Death Corps?" Ding Yi said. "I don't think I could stay there and enjoy life. That guy isn't human."
Liao Shizhong nodded in agreement.
"Here they come!" Ding Yi suddenly said, looking up. Liao Shizhong's face tightened as he saw a dozen figures approaching. The one in front was moving extremely fast, and in the next moment, his outline was clearly visible.
"It's Deng Pu!" Ding Yi stood up. "Brother, our time has come."
"Die we will, but if we can take a piece of him, it will be worth it," Liao Shizhong smiled.
The wind rustled, and Deng Pu appeared before them. He glanced at the bodies on the ground and looked up. "Impressive, really impressive."
Ding Yi held his spear horizontally in front of his chest, his body tense. Facing Deng Pu, he knew he had no chance of winning, let alone with the dozen men behind him. Even alone, Deng Pu was far too strong.
"Drop your weapons and surrender!" Deng Pu looked at them with a hint of pity. "You're no match for me. Dying in vain serves no purpose. You've done your duty to your master."
Ding Yi laughed and slowly raised his spear. With a roar, he pushed off the ground, merging with his spear into a meteor, charging at Deng Pu.
A cold light flashed in Deng Pu's eyes. He raised his hand, and the spear and hand collided, producing a metallic sound. Ding Yi was lifted into the air and then slammed back to the ground.
Deng Pu held the tip of Ding Yi's spear. The gap in their levels was like an unbridgeable chasm.
Ding Yi spat out a mouthful of blood, twisted his wrist, and split the spear in half. The spear tip lunged at Deng Pu's abdomen.
Deng Pu coldly snorted, flipped his wrist, and the half-spear in his hand pierced Ding Yi's chest. The raised spear hung in the air and fell to the ground with a clatter.
Deng Pu stepped over Ding Yi and approached Liao Shizhong, who was sitting on the ground. Liao Shizhong raised his knife and swung it at Deng Pu. The attack was no different from a street fight. Deng Pu didn't even bother to dodge, just slightly turned his body, and the knife flew far away.
He stepped on Liao Shizhong's thigh, and with a crack, the bone broke. Liao Shizhong laughed, spitting a mouthful of saliva at Deng Pu.
Deng Pu sneered, kicked Liao Shizhong, and he fell to the ground. Deng Pu's boot pressed on Liao Shizhong's chest, and with a slight force, the bones cracked.
"Damn brat, if you have the guts, kill your grandpa," Liao Shizhong's eyes widened as he looked at Deng Pu. Blood foamed from his mouth with each word. He reached out his hands, weakly touching the boot, and blood stained Deng Pu's boot.
Deng Pu looked down at this tenacious soldier. His opponent had no fighting power left but was still trying to do something. Liao Shizhong finally touched the boot and tore a piece of the pant leg. He smiled contentedly, his head tilting to the side, and died.
This man used his last strength to tear a piece of his pant leg? Deng Pu didn't find it funny. He silently stepped over Liao Shizhong's body and continued forward. His subordinates followed closely behind. Seeing the desperate fight of these Chu soldiers, everyone was on high alert. The road ahead would not be smooth, and the Chu soldiers would not surrender easily.
An hour later, a figure appeared on the hill where the intense battle had just taken place. He was dressed in black, carrying an iron saber, and it was Qin Feng, who had rushed over.
He saw Ding Yi impaled by an iron spear, Liao Shizhong lying on his back, and Xiao Diao with a sword in his chest and a broken bow in his hand.
He knew all three. Ding Yi was Commander Zuo's personal guard, Xiao Diao was a renowned marksman, and Liao Shizhong was more familiar because he had once provoked Qin Feng and been beaten.
Three more familiar faces had fallen forever. Qin Feng silently pulled the spear from Ding Yi's body and used it as a hoe to dig a large pit on the hill. He placed the three bodies in the pit and arranged their weapons beside them.
He bowed deeply to them, and with a wave of his hand, the dirt from the edge of the pit was swept in by the wind.
After burying the three bodies, Qin Feng felt a chill. Ding Yi's skills were on par with his own, but from the scene, it seemed he was no match for the opponent, losing decisively.
The opponent was at least an eighth or ninth-level master, far beyond his ability to handle. Should he turn back and run, or continue forward to the uncertain and deadly appointment? Taking this step would likely mean certain death.
After a moment's hesitation, Qin Feng gritted his teeth and continued forward.
