Chapter 33 of 60

CH 33

10 min read2,441 words

Zheng Li came forward and spoke up, “Ah’Xun, how about I do it, if I lose I’ll kneel and if I win he’ll kneel for you.”

It must be said that Zheng Li really, was an extremely reliable, good brother. He would never flake out at the last minute.

But He Xun looked Zheng Li in the eye and shook his head, “You won’t do.”

Zheng Li typically didn’t ride much, and half a month had passed since they last raced for fun. If Zheng Li went up now, it was a sure defeat. How could he watch with wide-open eyes as his own good brother kneeled before another person?

As a trust-fund kid, Zheng Li was naturally prideful and wanted to protect his image. He knew the likelihood of failure was high, and low for victory. He would definitely be reluctant to kneel before someone if he lost, but for his brothers, he had to.

Zheng Li hurriedly waved his hand, “Don’t say men can’t do it. Seeing your situation, Little Five is set on not letting you go, right? Rather than wasting time here, why not switch out players, what do you say?”

He Xun took a few steps forward, a small tail tightly holding onto him from behind.

“Peipei… …”

Peijin cut him off before he even finished speaking, “No, no, you just can’t, there’s nothing to discuss, I will never ever let go.”

He Xun motioned to Zheng Li, “Check over the car, see if there are any issues. I’m going to speak to him for a moment.”

Zheng Li gave an evil grin, “Alright, take your time.”

Meanwhile, Wang Qiang and the others were getting a bit impatient. Wang Qiang sneered, his vicious, ugly face filled with mockery, “Being so scared, you should just admit defeat, and save everybody the time. Wouldn’t it be easier for you to kowtow and yell you’re sorry? Don’t put on an act.” Finished, Wang Qiang let out a savage laugh.

Not only Wang Qiang, but his entire group of brothers laughed tauntingly.

And Xu Yi’s face grew more triumphant, gazing at He Xun as if he were a pile of trash.

He Xun pried off Peijin’s hands, then he turned around and put both his hands on her shoulders.

He leaned down a little, meeting her eyes, “Peipei, just this once, after that I’ll never agree to this kind of thing ever again.”

Peijin knew that He Xun had made up his mind when she heard him. Her eyes felt a bit dry and sour (1) as she called out He Xun’s full name for the first time.

(1) “Eyes dry and sour” refers to a sort of bitter or tired feeling.

“He Xun, you only have one life.”

At a time like this, He Xun couldn’t back down anymore. (1)

(1) The saying used is “riding a tiger’s back”, derived from the idiom, “if you ride a tiger, it’s hard to get off”, meaning that once you’ve already put your foot into something, it’s extremely hard for you to stop or go back.

He wasn’t an inflexible person, and of course, he wouldn’t blindly reject advice.

People sometimes would have to make compromises for some others. Peijin had coaxed him for so long, for the first time in his life, he wanted to take a step back for a girl.

However at a time like this, even if he wanted to step away, the other party wouldn’t be open to it.

And if didn’t go, then it would be his brother going.

For his sake Zheng Li would risk his own life, he naturally couldn’t watch with open eyes as Zheng Li kowtowed before someone.

After all, due to his own pride today, he had only brought his closest brothers. This had caused the current dilemma.

He Xun stressed, “Peipei, just this once, I promise.”

During then, Zheng Li walked over and made an ‘ok’ sign to He Xun, “Ah’Xun, I’ve checked over the motorcycle, all’s ok.” As a matter of fact, to Zheng Li, today’s case really was just a small race. He and He Xun had walked together for so many years and their days of drag racing were many. There were even races even more exciting than this spectacle.

When they were young, they wouldn’t have known any better and would’ve literally picked up sticks for an all out brawl.

He and He Xun had known each other for the longest and had the best relationship.

In the past, He Xun was seriously crazy when he winded up his car. He would soar to the highest speed, yet still his hands and heart went steady, he wouldn’t even lose control of his breath. He appeared to be fearless, regardless of what situation he was against.

So seeing He Xun assure Peijin was an unprecedented moment, even Zheng Li was a bit surprised.

If it weren’t for Peijin standing in his way, He Xun would’ve already won this race by now.

However to see someone who could subdue He Xun appear, as a brother, He Xun was truly grateful.

Otherwise, aside from his few brothers, there would be nothing He Xun could get attached to, and that He Xun would really be a terrible mess.

However it was the first time Zheng Li had discovered that Peijin cared so much about He Xun’s safety.

He Xun nodded.

He squeezed Peijin’s fleshy palm, saying, “Peipei, be good and wait for me here.”

Peijin watched He Xun walk up, hesitating for a moment. She struggled with herself, but ultimately still chose to follow up, “I’ll go with you.”

Before the words came out of her mouth she was still a bit hesitant, however once they had been said, she didn’t decide to take it back.

He Xun turned around and stared at her, “What did you say?”

Peijin pulled herself together, enunciating each word, “I said, I want to go with you.”

“Peipei, you’re sure?”

Peijin earnestly nodded her head, “I’m very sure, extremely sure.”

He Xun deeply gazed at her, and then said, “Ok.”

He looked at Wang Qiang, “I’m taking someone, that alright?”

Wang Qiang sneered, “Not a problem, suit yourself.”

When Peijin had put on her helmet, mounted the motorcycle and had her arms fixed around He Xun’s waist did a sense of reality settle in her heart.

She was actually getting on a motorcycle and preparing to drag race with He Xun.

Obviously, she was a timid person, she was mortally afraid of death and treasured every day of her life.

She didn’t understand why she would make such a decision. But this time, she felt, she wouldn’t regret it, she wouldn’t regret it a bit.

Everyone was responsible for each decision they made.

She thought this must be the most wayward day of all the years she had been alive.

She would go wild this time, just this once.

Let the youth have their rare freedom, and to leave behind a few more memories with He Xun.

She wouldn’t be wasting her transmigration by going wild this once.

Thinking so, the feeling of fear in Peijin’s heart slowly calmed down.

He Xun squeezed the pair of hands at his waist like he was silently comforting her and for her to relax.

Upon the order, the two motorcycles sped off at the same time.

This winding road usually had little traffic, so Wang Qiang had chosen the drag race site here.

As Peijin sat at the back of the motorcycle, her eyes were tightly shut. She didn’t dare to look at the scenery of the winding mountain road.

Once they stormed out from the runway, outside, would be bottomless cliff edges.

If something were to happen, it could be a fatal car crash.

Was it worth it?

Peijin couldn’t help but question herself.

She felt, it was worth it. It was like she had thought before, transmigrating was a bizarre experience, and she could only experience it once in her life.

Since she had already had such a strange experience, what was adding on drag racing?

Anyhow, her current life was already a lot.

Then she might as well live it more colorfully.

As Peijin was lost in her thoughts, the motorcycles flew forward at breakneck speed.

She firmly leaned against He Xun’s back, both her arms wrapped around his waist.

She even thought, just driving like this, didn’t seem all that bad?

Right as she thought that, the brakes were abruptly slammed on and the motorcycle smoothly came to a stop.

Straight up until the helmet was taken off her head, her head was still in the clouds.

It’s over? This drag-race round, it was actually over so fast?

It was like taking a high-speed train, from one place to another nearby location. As the train had just started to pick up speed for a bit, it began to slow down.

Peijin had that sort of feeling right now.

It seemed the race hadn’t even started and it had already ended.

She didn’t even have the time to thoroughly experience the taste of the highway’s wild winds.

Currently, she unexpectedly was left a bit unsatisfied.

Peijin pursed her lips, wanting to recall the after feeling of drag racing just now. The next second, she was single-handedly enveloped into He Xun’s embrace.

Instinctively, she rushed forward a small step, her forehead softly nestled against He Xun’s chest.

She could feel the slight strength from He Xun’s arm around her.

Peijin blinked, “Brother Xun.”

“Mm.” He Xun paused, and then said, “The race is over, we won.”

He Xun used the word, ‘we’. He and Peijin had participated together in this drag race round.

It was the first time, and could also be the last. However, in comparison to all the other races he participated in, this one was going to be unforgettable.

Because even knowing how dangerous the situation was, she hadn’t hesitated to say she wanted to go with him.

Maybe to some people, this move seemed a bit foolish, a bit impulsive, even as if they were digging their own graves.

But to him, it was sincerity, and a madness to follow him at all cost.

But it happened so, that he loved this sort of reckless madness.

Zheng Li chortled ‘haha’ as he came over, “Ah’Xun, you drove very smoothly today.”

Although He Xun had won today’s race very easily, Zheng Li knew He Xun could’ve crushed Wang Qiang against the ground. Based on He Xun’s actual strength, on this kind of circular highway, he undoubtedly could have driven at an even faster rate.

But he hadn’t.

Compared to how fast he was in the past, today’s was as slow as a turtle, so to speak.

Today he went as steady as a horse.

He Xun calmly gave an ‘mhm.’

Peijin had been with him, even if he wanted to go crazy, he still had qualms about the safety of the person behind him.

It was just like she had told him, there is only one life.

In the past, he could care less, but now, he had someone he cared for.

He Xun’s side was beaming with smiles, while the faces on Wang Qiang’s were extremely ugly. Especially Wang Qiang, his expression sullen as if he had just eaten a whole rice paddy. (1)

(1) This is a nicer euphemism for “eaten shit”

Xu Yi looked dreadfully pale, in complete disbelief.

It was said that gang leaders were bad-ass, very powerful, very capable(1)! Why was a thirty-year-old, grown man, ultimately incapable of beating a high-school senior?

(1) This is the word, “混开”, which refers to people who are very ruthless and/or capable of surviving in the world, this mostly would pertain to an individual’s personal success.

Did that mean everything he had said was meant to trick an ignorant girl? So she had always been kept in the dark, deceived?

But at this moment no one could give Xu Yi an answer.

She only was aware of her own regret, regret for finding a gang leader to be her boyfriend, and regret for making him provoke He Xun.

If she had known the outcome of today’s race would be a loss, then no matter what she wouldn’t have done such a thankless, stupid thing.

A shame this world has no medicine for regret.

Wang Qiang clenched his teeth and walked forward. Then right before Zheng Li and the other’s eyes, he knelt onto the ground with a flop and shouted “I’m sorry” three times for He Xun.

After all was done, he looked calm, getting up without a word. With his brothers, he sped away from the place where he had lost face. When he left, he didn’t take Xu Yi.

Xu Yi stared at He Xun from where she was, and then glanced back at Wang Qiang, who was quickly departing. She bit down on her teeth, eventually turning on her heels and going after them.

After Xu Yi, Wang Qiang, and their group left, Fatty and the others completely relaxed.

Fatty said with gusto and cheer, “Brother Xun, fucking awesome, you crushed an experienced, big boss.”

Zheng Li rolled his eyes, “Shouldn’t you have known this already? That gang brother is ripped, but it’s actually just for decoration.”

Fatty giggled, “Go, go go, let’s go ice skating, after that I’ll order a few beers and we can celebrate to our heart’s content.”

T/N: (Extra: I wanted to add yolo, ‘you only live once’, but I didn’t think it was appropriate, if I did though…)

He leaned down a little, meeting her eyes, “Peipei, just this once, after that I’ll never agree to this kind of thing ever again.”

Peijin knew that He Xun had made up his mind when she heard him. Her eyes felt a bit dry and sour as she called out He Xun’s full name for the first time.

“He Xun, yolo.”

Out of curiosity, does anyone have any criticisms about the story? I know it’s not perfect, but regardless, I’d like to hear the reader’s opinions. Also, if you have any critiques about my translation quality, comment them here too.

This is a safe space, but that also constitutes mutual respect.

I think the main reason I’m saying this is because as a t/l I rarely get feedback on my website, which I desperately require for future progress. I’m going to remove the email requirement for comments (If I haven’t already), so anons can converse as well.

Plus, I read the reviews (obsessively) on NU, so I want to open a small discussion.
