Chapter 27.1 - Celebration
4 min read967 wordsMature
The Black Eagle tribe made a wise choice and joined the Jushan tribe. The day after they returned to Jushan tribe, Luo Tong’s sick son took the medicine that Hua Yi brought and turned into an alive and kicking little beastman.
Luo Tong kept his promise and announced on the spot that he would give the chief’s tent to Hua Yi. From then on, this big tribe would serve as his home.
No one was surprised by the news. It hadn’t been two days since Chief Luo Tong made a deal with Silver Teeth.
Those who were nursing grievances were all instigated to death by the great elders, while the others couldn’t care less. They thought that, since Chief Luo Tong had said so, he shouldn’t go back on his words; else, he ought to be replaced as the chief. Besides, a lot of people had heard of the mercenaries. The traveling merchants spoke of them as if they were gods. They must be capable people. Maybe having one as a chief would make their tribe stronger and richer.
And so, Hua Yi’s ten-year life as a fugitive finally ended. Suddenly, he had a group of brothers, a family, as well as a tribe… although not the one where he was born and grew up in.
The celebration came as scheduled. On one hand, it was to congratulate the new chief, and on the other hand, it was to welcome the new members.
On that day, all the men, women, the old and the young of the whole tribe came out. Like the Autumn Hunting Festival, Chang An was originally sleeping in a pitch dark tent arranged for him by Hua Yi. But then Suo Laimu unexpectedly intruded, waking him up.
He hadn’t had time to rub his eyes when Suo Laimu hurriedly let him go again and said, “Aiyo, such a big thing and I haven’t notified the Tree God yet!”
With these words, Suo Laimu rushed out mindlessly. With one hand holding onto his crooked hat, he ran to the mound of a big tree that had its branches sticking out and weren’t well-supported. He juggled out a roll of incense from his sleeves, then inserted a row of them into the ground, and soon after, they were smoldering. After a while, a series of mumble-jumbles came from his mouth. Then he knelt down respectfully, folded his hands, and began to mutter some incantations and paid worship to the big tree.
Chang An, who saw all these, didn’t know what to say about it.
Suo Laimu was so devoted that his face, which looked like it hadn’t been washed for ten thousand years, was unexpectedly a little dignified. It didn’t look like he was joking. It was as if he really believed there were gods within the big tree.
As Chang An watched the whole earnest process of worship, he actually began to believe a little. He silently moved to the side, trying to use his not very big body to block the broken leaves that were piled in the corner.
It happened to be windy the night before. He had come here to train with his blade and he had cut down many leaves. Wasn’t that just shaving the Tree God?
Chang An guiltily rubbed his face with his sleeve, feeling that he’d been a little disrespectful.
When the incense burned halfway, Suo Laimu finally finished. He was just about to stand up and talk when, unfortunately, a light breeze came, blowing up the broken leaves behind Chang An. A leaf even got plastered to Suo Laimu’s face.
Chang An was dumbstruck and thought: “Aiyo, it’s a mess, the Tree God will come out and complain!”
But this god, if his head was shaved by someone, would he also come out and sue the person? When Chang An thought about this, he didn’t feel guilty anymore as he came up with a reasonable explanation–Such a fool, it must be because the Tree God didn’t have the skill that he wasn’t properly revered.
Suo Laimu took the leaf from his face and was stunned when he saw that the leaf was in two halves. It was accurately split from the middle vein. The edge where the parts would meet was perfectly straight and smooth, and apart from the middle vein, no other cut was made.
Suo Laimu raised his eyes to look at Chang An but saw that Chang An’s eyes were just roaming around, looking at the sky and at the earth, unwilling to look him in the face.
Suo Laimu raised the leaf. The leaves of this big tree were different from willows; they were much smaller. The veins on the leaves were even less obvious. It was a difficult thing to do, but he, unexpectedly, had such a good eye. He had moved his hand without the slightest error.
