Shouri spent the next few days in a daze.
Kazusa’s death – it was so sudden. Even though it had been less than a year since transferring to a new school, no one was talking much about it. The only people who were fazed were Shouri and the girls who had secretly admired him.
Kazusa, buried with the flowers in his coffin, was as pretty as ever and looked as if he was going to wake up and smile at any moment. There were some of Kazusa’s friends from Tokyo at the funeral and Shouri had talked with some of them. Among them was Yoshiko.
“I see… He’s gone… Even though we could all see it coming-” She twisted her lips, frowning at the ground, as if she was trying to hold back tears.
“You could?” Shouri asked, to which she replied with a forced smile.
“I kinda get it. Kazusa was loved by death.”
Loved by death. Those words stuck in Shouri’s memory and never left.
Kazusa’s mother had been crying the whole time, tears streaming down her face. She tried to force herself to smile but failed, sobbing even worse each time. Kazusa’s father was also there; he said he was a banker. He was a slim, smart-looking man, and he looked just like Kazusa.
His remains were placed in the grave of the Uemura family, which was located in the quaint little town. Shouri was watching the coffin being lowered. On a clear day, they could see the ocean from the cemetery, the serene ripples of the sea glittering in the sun.
There were no more tears. Because even now, it felt as if Kazusa was still alive.

Shouri chucked, a sad smile growing on his lips. His breath turned hazy and dissipated as the blue-black abyss spread endlessly in front of him; the sea that he loves.
The world was still spinning, even now. Waves came and went, but his heart stayed unmoving.
Shouri had graduated, and now was studying to become a doctor. He had laughed a lot, cried a lot, but all those emotions felt empty like a black-and-white movie. His heart felt hollow, always missing the piece that completed him.
“I didn’t even get to become the best fisherman in town…”
Wanting to escape the shadow cast by Kazusa’s death, he convinced his parents he wanted to study in Tokyo. But when he moved to Tokyo and started living on his own, he could not forget him. Whenever a beautiful boy walked past on the street, he would follow him with his eyes, hoping for something that didn’t exist.
“I’ve had a few girls tell me I’m beautiful, but it’s hard to find a girl more beautiful than you.”
One step, then another, he walked. Just as his sneakers became soaked from the sea water, Shouri stopped. The sea was endlessly calming, soothing, and beautiful.
“Well, let’s go now.”
As he surrounded himself with the blue-black that he had always loved.
