“Arise”
It seemed that it was time to start school before he knew it. Shouri, who had been looking outside in a daze, stood up hurriedly.
Of course, he was thinking about the boy from Tokyo. When he returned from the beach yesterday, he was already gone. It felt as if he had met in him a dream. An ephemeral, beautiful boy who seems to disappear as soon as he is illuminated by the bright sunlight. He’s probably a normal human being and since this is the only junior high school in the world, it should be easy to meet him today.
As expected, the boy was behind the teacher who came in a little later than usual. As soon as they saw him, the girls buzzed with excitement.
“Good morning. I’m sorry, I’m a little late. I’m sure everyone is curious, so I’ll go ahead and introduce you to the new student. Uemura-kun, come in.”
The teacher smiled at Kazusa, the latter nodding in reply, his silky hair swaying as he walked.
‘I’m Kazusa Uemura. I’m from Tokyo. Nice to meet you….
He concluded the simple introduction with a light bow. An enraptured sigh could be heard from somewhere. His good looks and soft demeanor were probably more than enough to attract the eyes of girls who were fed up with their countryside classmates.
‘Well, I’ll let you introduce yourself in detail later, but for now, have a seat there.”
Kazusa’s seat was at the very beginning of the last row. The spot that had been vacant for a long time and had a desk placed there today. His eyes met mine for a moment as he walked between the desks. I felt the edge of his shapely lips lift slightly.
“Yes, yes, quiet, quiet. Hinata-san, Ando-san, please.”
The class quieted down briefly at the teacher’s command. Homeroom was as boring as usual.
Come to think of it, it’s Monday. I have five hours of classes and no extracurricular activities, so I’ll be home three hours earlier than usual. Shall I invite Kazusa over? I just met him, but I want to get closer…
Homeroom didn’t take long to get over with as he thought about all the things on his mind. Shouri immediately ran over to Kazusa’s seat as soon as the teacher left.
”Ah, Shouri … good morning.”
Kazusa caught sight of Shouri and smiled at him. The contrast between his white porcelain skin and his black jacket was striking. Shouri wondered how he could look good even with the hideous school uniform.
”Good morning!”
“We’re in the same class~”
Shouri chuckled. “’No, there’s only one class.’
Contrary to Kazusa’s timid appearance, he had quite a bubbly personality. His shyness seems to have lessened somewhat, as he was more open to Shouri than he was yesterday. A carefree smile was painted on his face, his eyes glittering like the stars.
“We have science next, but you don’t know where the laboratory is, right? I’ll show you.”
“Really? Thank you!”
“Yeah, follow me~”
Normally, Shouri would talk in the classroom until the last minute, then make a mad dash for it, but he was five minutes faster than usual today. The science lab was on the opposite side of the same floor, so they had plenty of time to talk.
“How many people were there at your old school?”
“A little over three hundred.”
“Really? I thought there would be five hundred or something people!”
“How many are here?”
“One hundred and thirteen, that’s less than half!”
The whole time he was talking, Shouri was looking at Kazusa’s face. A face that looked better than even the celebrities on TV, smiling brightly right in front of him. He reminded him of the word ‘enchanting’, that they just learnt in english. Kazusa was many times more enchanting than any celebrity he had ever seen.
“But the school building is huge!”
“Really?”
“The first time I saw it, I was stunned by the size of the classrooms and courtyard. My old school was much smaller.”
“Oh, schools in Tokyo are pretty small…”
I pull up a memory of the city that I keep in the corner of my head. I only go to Tokyo a couple of times a year so I can’t remember much. Maybe it’s because there are so many things in the city that each memory is so vague.
‘Yeah, yeah. The schoolyard, for example, was about half the size of this school.
Kazusa nodded his head. His ears are beautiful. I only just noticed then. Only the tips are slightly tinted rosy.
“The school building was five stories high, so maybe if they were all stretched out, they would have been about the same size.”
“Five floors… Ah, It won’t open.” The door to the science room that Shouri put his hand on was rattling but would not open. It looks like it was still locked.
Kazusa lined up with Shouri, leaning against the wall. A small speck of dust glistened in the sunlight that shone through the window. He followed it with his fingertips for no reason, and then similarly absentminded began asking questions.
‘Do you do any club activities?’
‘Club activities?’
‘Yeah. It’s compulsory to participate in extracurricular activities, so you’ll have to do something.’
Kazusa furrowed his brows in irritation
‘What’s wrong?’
‘No … no … no, it’s nothing. It’s nothing. What do I have to choose from?
‘Guys can join the soccer club, baseball club but not the brass band. But the brass band is only for girls.’
Kazusa avoided Shouri’s gaze, his thin fingers scratched nervously at his brand new textbook.
‘Hey, what’s up, Kazusa? It doesn’t seem like nothing.’
‘Ummm well… I’ll just tell you about it later.”
With a clatter of footsteps, the class arrived.

I read “The 10 year I loved you the most” like a week ago and I still cry thinking about it. I’ve never read a more soul-crushing novel.
