Chapter 7
The next day, Kazusa went to Shouri’s house. Kazusa was smiling as usual, however for Shouri who stood in the doorway, this was the first time he’d come to visit without contacting him.
“What would you have done if I wasn’t home?” Shouri asked, as he pulled the ice cream out of the freezer, to which Kazusa replied cheekily.
“Where else would you be then?”
Shouri couldn’t help but laugh, eyes curving into crescents. “Here you go”, he said, handing Kazusa a soda-flavoured ice cream.
“Thanks,” Kazusa smiled. Shouri subconsciously kept his eyes on the other’s body as he unwrapped the ice cream, focused on Kazusa’s pale white arms peeking out of the sleeves of the t-shirt. Unlike Shouri who was tanned from club activities and sport, Kazusa had not even a patch of tan on him, not even after yesterday’s beach swim. For some time now, Shouri had begun to doubt he was even human.
“What are you so focused on? If the ice cream melts, it’ll get everywhere,” Kazusa teased.
Letting out a small sound, Shorui nodded before hastily opening the wrapper. The ice cream was almost melted, as Kazusa had said it would be. As he licked his ice cream a thought occurred to Shouri.
“You eat your ice cream pretty slowly, don’t you, Kazusa?”
“Hmm?” Kazusa looked at him as he ate, pouting. Eventually, he realised what he meant and laughed.
“I guess it’s because I don’t bite it, unlike you. If I eat it all at once, I get brain freeze…”
“I see…,” muttered Shouri. Silence ensued, neither of them saying anything as they ate their ice cream. It was hot, with cicadas buzzing louder than usual today. His mind wandered back to his summer vacation homework, groaning in disdain. He had not started on any exercises, and had not even decided on a novel for his book report. Sighing, he unpacked his books.
“Shouri.”
Shouri, who was in a daze, was startled and almost choked on his ice cream, Kazusa suddenly shouted out. He had finished his ice cream, only chewing on the bland wooden stick out of boredom. He threw his stick away, before looking towards Kazusa in anticipation.
“Shouri, last month, a girl confessed to you, didn’t she?” Licking his ice cream stick clean, Kazusa questioned.
“Come to think of it, that happened,” Shouri nodded.
“What even happened?” Kazusa asked.
“Nothing really, I just asked her ‘What do you like about me?’”
“Did you really ask that?”
At first, Shouri didn’t understand what Kazusa meant, but when he fumbled through the silk threads of his memory, it was nothing but a blur.
“Dunno, forgot.”
“So you rejected her?” Shouri nodded.
“That whats-her-name, wasn’t she cute though?”
“Eh, I didn’t care for her.” Shouri replied nonchalantly, to which Kazusa laughed. His angelic laughter filled the room, before going silent.
“Hey.”
Suddenly, Kazusa looked down. When he looked up again, he was smiling as innocently as usual. He kept that expression on his face and leaned a little closer.
“How did she reply?”
Perhaps the heat had gotten to him, but Shouri thought that Kazusa was beautiful. Sweat beads glistening on his fine skin. Cheek and lips reddened, flushed. Possessed, Shouri answered.
“Something about me being cool when playing soccer or hearing about me from classmates, I don’t know.”
Kazusa laughed, as he traced his finger across Shouri’s forehead.
“Only looks and people’s opinion of you, huh?”
Kazusa sighed.
“Hey Shouri, what would you do if I died?”
Shouri couldn’t help but stare at Kazusa’s face. He was now face-to-face with Shouri, his smile not at all faltering.
“Don’t talk about that kind of sad thing…”
How many times has this guy confronted me with the concept of ‘death’? Thinking about that, Shouri looked away. Kazusa placed his lips to Shouri’s ear, the sweet smell of burnt vanilla drifting from the boy.
“Hey, I like you, Shouri,” Kazusa said simply, as if it was a normal thing to do. However, Shouri’s eyes widened, his mouth trembled and words refused to come out. A sweet scent drifted from Kazusa, who should have been sweating, that made his head feel dizzy. The distance between them became short and shorter. Touching, but not at the same time. His breathing was light and his soft hair fluttered down, tickling his ears.
“Hehe~”
There was a suppressed chuckle near his earlobe. As if waiting for Shouri’s answer, Kazusa raised himself up and then whispered sweetly.
“Chu~”
A sweet scent of burnt vanilla melted into the humid air, the sound of their beating hearts echoing in the summer breeze could be heard. Shouri himself no longer knew what he was doing. However, he just knew that he wanted to have this boy infront of him for himself.
Somewhat hesitantly, he ruffled Kazusa’s bangs and gently kissed his forehead. He felt the twitching of the thin body that was so close to him. The expression of affection only lasted a moment. Just a touch. Sleekly, he felt his lips crawl down, this time to his closed eyelids. Slowly, he moved his face away, leaving a satisfied smile on Kazusa’s face.
“Hnnghhh,”
Kazusa raised his hand up to grab Shouri’s chin, somewhat roughly. His grip was not strong and Shouri could’ve broken loose if he had wanted to. But before Shouri could react, soft lips pressed against his own
“K-Kazu!”
The kiss wasn’t rough, but if he’d had to describe it, instead it was light and somewhat refreshing. Shouri’s voice was muffled as he held his breath, flinching when the pair separated. Kazusa smiled innocently at the flustered boy, his eyes rising into a crescent.

“Shouri! Shouri!”
Shouri jerked back into reality as his name was called loudly. His mother, Michiko was glaring at him, a bowl of potato salad in her hand.
“What’s the matter with you, dear? You’ve been in such a daze recently. Do you want more potato salad?”
“Y-Yeah, sure,” Shouri replied, still flustered. Ever since that day with Kazusa, Shouri had found himself constantly daydreaming. His family looked at him worriedly, but from Shouri’s point of view, it was impossible not to remember that moment. That smile when he whispered ‘I love you’, that light kiss; just a touch. It was impossible to forget. Afterall, that was Shouri’s first kiss. He was supposed to lose it to a pretty girl, but something went crazy and he gave it to Kazusa.
But I don’t regret it…
The Iwasaki family all gaped; Shouri, mumbling to himself, poured miso into his potato salad.
”Hey, hey, Shouri, what’s going on?” Michiko inquired, worried, before sighing. Teenage boys; you could never read them.
“Shouri, I don’t think putting miso in potato salad is a good idea…,” Hiromi, Shouri’s younger sister, muttered. She was used to her older brother being an idiot, but this time, she thought he’d crossed the line.
“What will be will be…,” sighed Hiroko, the grandmother of the family, as she stirred her miso soup. She was the oldest and therefore the most powerful person in the family. With that, the two stopped their interrogation.
Unaware of his family’s horror, Shouri poured the worcestershire sauce on his rice.
T/N: But miso potato salad lowkey sounds good
