"Senpai, Souta, he’s really useless, isn’t he? There’s no way he could be my boyfriend."
"Got it. Then let’s break up."
"Huh...?"
Until then, Hanabi had been standing confidently with her arms crossed, looking down at me with a condescending gaze, mocking me. She had never expected me to resist.
Even with a face like she had been struck by a bolt from the blue, she still managed to look cute. It’s no wonder she is called one of the top beauties in the school.
Her large, animal-like eyes, well-shaped lips, slightly downturned eyebrows, and porcelain-like skin without a single blemish. Her light-colored, shoulder-length hair, slender figure, and surprisingly large chest. No matter how many people are around, she always stands out with her radiant presence.
When Hanabi walks down the hallway, every man who passes by turns to look at her. She has the appearance that perfectly embodies the ideal of a man’s dream.
Still, I know all too well that this childhood friend, Hanabi Itsuki, is a complete character wreck, despite her good looks.
"Wait a minute. What are you saying? Break up? Ahaha! I only want you to joke with that idiotic face of yours."
There you go, that’s the kind of person she is. A terrible moral abuser.
"I’m not joking. I’m serious."
I have endured all the terrible insults she has thrown at me, without a word.
I thought that if I didn’t resist and just apologized, eventually Hanabi’s mood would improve, and everything would be smoothed over.
Even when I felt humiliated and wanted to cry, I just endured it. Hanabi has been treating me like a punching bag ever since we were kids.
When we became middle schoolers and started dating almost by force, her attitude didn’t change. If anything, it got worse.
Why did I stay by her side despite all this? It was because, thanks to Hanabi, I was constantly reminded of my worthlessness every day, to the point where I lost my ability to make sound judgments.
It’s true that victims of moral abuse and domestic violence can’t escape their abusers, even if they aren’t physically restrained. I wasn’t locked up by Hanabi, but her violent words were like chains that bound my heart.
So, why did I finally wake up?
—Because the stress had caused so many ulcers in my stomach that I had to be hospitalized.
That’s when I finally realized.
If I continued to be involved with Hanabi, I would be killed.
After all, she came to the hospital just to mock me, saying things like, "Senpai, who gave you permission to be hospitalized? You’re so weak that you get ulcers in your stomach. Are you trying to become the ultimate useless man by having useless organs?"
And that’s when I said the lines at the beginning.
Useless, worthless, not good enough to be a boyfriend, staying with me is my kindness—.
I had almost become numb to these words, but it was abnormal to just take them without saying anything.
"Besides, you don’t have the right to break up with me, a mere senpai...! What are you trying to say? Are you getting cocky because I’m your girlfriend? I’ll wake you up, poor senpai. No one but me would ever put up with a useless man like you."
"Even if that’s true, it’s not a reason to continue dating you."
"…!"
"Good for you. You’re free from your worthless boyfriend. That’s all. Go home."
I waved my hand to shoo her away like a bug, but Hanabi didn’t move from beside the bed.
Sighing, I stood up and grabbed her arm, leading her to the entrance.
"Hey! What are you doing!? Let go! I still have things to say...!"
"Oh, right. But I don’t. And looking at your face makes me want to vomit."
"Wh-What!? Do you think you can say such terrible things to me!?"
"See you. From this moment on, we are strangers."
"Senpai—!"
I pushed her shoulder, and as she stumbled backward into the hallway, I closed the door to the hospital room.
In the quiet of the room, I let out a breath.
Finally, I have won my freedom. The relationship with that devilish moral abuser is now completely over.
