Chapter1
Part 5
On the fourth day they went to the history museum with a goal of researching dragon slayers. The girl dearly wished for the knowledge it contained.
She didn’t hold any interest in this town’s buildings, but the museum was an exception to the rule.
What if…she could find what she wished for inside?
Inside the museum, reading about the ancient legend where dragons ruled in the skies over the vast lands, studying various weapons used by the dragon subjugation force to slay their nemesis, heat rushed through the girl. Her heart danced in the madness.
Nothing but one choice was left. She had to fight, to reign over humanity with the help of the dragon blood which ran through her veins.
With bloodshot eyes she nailed all the information into her head. Girl realized what she had to do.
“Haha…”
Laugh escaped from her mouth before she knew better. Museum visitors shot dubious glances at the girl as she sniffled back her laughter.
It wasn’t her fault; how could she not laugh? It was beyond words.
“For human science to be this advanced…” she whispered in awe.
The ships that attacked the island a while back were solely for “reconnaissance”, and to dispose of “out of commission” ships, playthings in the human armada.
The crew too, were convicts on death rows or exile, a disordered crowd with weapons, not militia with any armed experience.
On the screen in the corner, a projector casted black-and-white moving images.
A dragon, larger than the silver dragon, was fighting against men–or rather, machines. Clump of metal that resembled cars, with a thick, long barrel mounted on top.
The narrator said it was a heavy armored tank, the cannon cylinder the Balmung.
[TN: Balmung is a reference to the Norse mythology, it was used to kill dragon Fanir]
The barrel grudgingly rotated towards the dragon, then everything went white and silent. A clean hole punched through the dragon’s chest. The giant dragon fell, and with it, the ground shook violently. Like a curtain, clouds of dust rolled up and covered everything.
How do one fight such powers?
Dragons’ strength was already the past, she realized.

[Live with me in human form. A town somewhere far away,] she begged.
She reached for the dragon’s wrist, the instant they left. She was afraid, afraid of that clean, round hole appearing on his chest.
[I cannot. Please understand.]
[I don’t] She blinked. Why, why ? [What’s with God? Gods, demons, angels, I don’t care. I…]
Her mouth worked silently. What would make him stay? What would–
[I love you] The words left her mouth on its own volition.
The dragon nodded. [I love you too.]
[No, not like that,] she said, [As a father, yes… But also more than that…]
He raised his eyebrows, then covered his face with his hands.
[Oh…That would not be allowed on Eden]
[Because I’m human and you’re a dragon?]
[You already know that the problem lies elsewhere]
Nothing was wrong with that, she knew. Even love between rabbit and wolves was allowed. The problem was their relationship as father and daughter, froster or not it was the few absolute taboos on Eden.
But even though she knew, she couldn’t hold herself back.
[I want to live with you]
[Oh] He mumbled, but the dragon wouldn’t answer, she knew his faith was too strong.
[So you insist on dying.] She was afraid of his answer, but still decided to ask anyway.
[Yes]
[Then I will die too]
[But you are–]
[If this city told me anything, it was that no one cared about dragons,] she said, [That’s why, only me, I will be the only one who stand on your side]
The dragon was surprised by her face.
[TN: Seems like it’s the dragon’s POV again ]
The boiling anger, the ugly hatred, the unrelenting love, none of those burning emotions was present. Some might call it enlightenment, others resignation.
The dragon was not sure which it was.
[I will go to the Eternal Kingdom with you. There… will I be allowed to love you?]
[Yes, in the Eternal Kingdom, I am sure.]
There were no rules in the Eternal Kingdom. It was a place of freedom, free from the shackles of mortality.
With that, they left the land of humans behind.
The girl changed after the trip. It was as if she had left her worldly attachments at the human city. The dragon was sure that if she continued to be how she was now, God would surely save the both of them when this island faced its eventual doom.
◆ ◆ ◆
For a while, the island was peaceful.
A paradise of animals, fruits aplenty on the branches of the lush forest, the Sanctuary was still standing tall and majestic.
The four days in the human city must have been just a nightmare. That kind of wretched place didn’t exist. Surely, the world was peaceful, just like the island, or so she convinced herself.
Four years passed, and the girl turned sixteen.
Bathed in the dragon’s blood, consumed the Fruit of Life and of Wisdom on a daily basis, and quenched her thirst with Nectar, the girl had a near-perfect beauty. Her appearance resembled that of the primordial maiden created by God.
Her heart became risher and her expressions enchanting. And every day and night, she weaved songs for the dragon. Songs of love.
Her voice was so sweet that even the dragon was almost seduced by it. It made the dragon wonder, wouldn’t surrendering to her be easier?
I love you.
The dragon repeated her words in reply. I love you too.
I like you.
I like you too, the dragon answered.
However, the dragon held his heart tight, he would never go any further.
But it was out of his love for the girl. If he did not violate the rule and continued to do good deeds, then they would be united in the next world should they meet.
Considering the doom that awaited in the few years to come, there was nothing more foolish than to reciprocate her love now. It would be folly to abandon an eternity in paradise for a few delightful years on a dying island.

The day of annihilation came without a preamble.
The dragon was sleeping in the Sanctuary with the girl in her usual red dress. She was humming the tones of love to his ear.
Then her lovely voice came to an abrupt halt.
First that came was the smell. A faint acrid whiff the girl noticed.
Then followed a buzzing. Like that of a bee’s, soft, yet persistent. It came from the sky.
Then a rumbling that shook the Sanctuary. The dragon woke and sat up, they rushed outside.
If the day of war ever came into existence, the girl thought that she would be standing against tanks.
However, as of now both girl and dragon saw an untold number of steel clusters flying, spoiling the night sky with dirty steel gray.
Yes, humanity defined them as “aircraft”.
Dragon summoned violent gales and flew up into the skies . The air-battle commenced.
He ripped with claws, gnawed with fangs and burnt to crisps with fire.
It wasn’t a fight in which a wingless girl could participate.
Silver dragon was immensely powerful.
No matter how many, all of his opponents were torn down one by one.
This courage, valiance and the body capable of anything… her chest throbbed in rhythm with each and every of his feats. The silver dragon was the symbol of invincibility to her.
At that moment, the girl didn’t see how the dragon could lose, even knowing how many powerful weapons humanity produced.
Aircrafts flew away and the dragon gave chase.
Girl pursued them with her eyes. The only thing she could do at that moment was to watch.
At first, she thought she was mistaken. The dragon didn’t have any visible injuries, but despite this he flew lower and lower.
When they arrived at the bay, her fear rapidly turned into reality.
Dragon’s wings lost their previous grace and in a moment he plunged down. Just what in the world was happening? His body heaved laboriously.
Both the dragon and girl saw air-raid as the first attack, but what actually happened was different from what they thought.
Even before aircraft assault, capsules similar to smoke bombs were left in the surroundings of the sanctuary to silenty sap dragon’s strength.
It was the real reason behind the faint acrid scent at the start. First attack was the poison.
As for Victory and defeat? Everything was decided before the battle. Even the aircraft was there only to act as a decoy and lure out the dragon.
It was a chemical compound which worked only on dragons, made for the sole reason of paralyzing them as fast as possible. At the time of its arrival, the dragon landed at the sanded beach while sucking in ragged breaths.
