Chapter 23

6 min read1,420 words

A storm over the promotion of Jin Yunho was brewing, thanks to the machinations of certain individuals, turning it into a tempest.

However, in Jin Yunho's home, everything was calm.

At this moment, Jin Yunho was standing on a stool, tilting his head back to paint the rusty signboard at the shop entrance.

"Yunxi, the smell of paint is bad for girls. You should go back inside quickly," Jin Yunho said, wearing a mask, gloves, and a work uniform bought for 10,000 won, looking quite like a professional painter.

"Huh... What could be so bad? When you're not home, I do all the painting. Get to work quickly; I'll keep an eye on it to make sure it's even," Jin Yunxi said, sitting on a stool at the door, wearing a set of old but clean pink sportswear, her hands resting on her chin, bickering with Jin Yunho.

"Talking back... Then sit further away," Jin Yunho shook his head, conceding helplessly.

"Screech"

Zheng Daqin opened the door, holding a bowl of soup, and said, "Yunho, come down and rest. Have a bowl of mung bean soup to cool off."

"Mom, I'm almost done. I'll drink it later," Jin Yunho lifted his arm slightly, wiping the sweat from his face, and continued working.

"Mom, you're so biased. You bring mung bean soup for my brother but not for me," Jin Yunxi pouted, complaining as usual.

"Brat, don't you have hands? The mung bean soup is on the kitchen counter. If you want to drink it, go get it yourself," Zheng Daqin slapped Jin Yunxi and scolded her with a frown.

"Why bother? I won't drink this bowl. It's perfect for me," Jin Yunxi stood up, reaching out to grab the bowl of mung bean soup from Zheng Daqin.

"Oh no, brat, don't grab it. I added extra rock sugar for your brother. If you want to drink it, go get your own," Zheng Daqin, like a protective tiger, quickly turned around and hid the bowl of mung bean soup in her arms to prevent Jin Yunxi from grabbing it.

"No, I want this bowl," Jin Yunxi insisted.

"No, it's for your brother," Zheng Daqin refused adamantly.

"Biased, Mom... You won't let me drink it," Jin Yunxi pouted, shouting up to Jin Yunho.

"Mom, give it to Yunxi. My throat has been bothering me lately, and sweet things aren't good for it," Jin Yunho smiled and shook his head, then said to Zheng Daqin.

"Oh... Then I'll make you a lighter one. Brat, you always fight with your brother," Zheng Daqin pushed the bowl of mung bean soup into Jin Yunxi's hands, muttering.

"Hehe..." Having won the battle, Jin Yunxi smiled and took a sip of the cool, refreshing mung bean soup, "Wow, so refreshing."

"Beep... Beep"

A black Hyundai Santa Fe SUV stopped in front of the炸酱面馆 (Jajangmyeon restaurant), and the car owner honked the horn twice.

Zheng Daqin, who was about to go inside, turned back; Jin Yunxi also put down the mung bean soup, and both mother and daughter curiously looked at the car at the door.

This was the Guro District, the poorest area in Seoul. Here, motor vehicles were usually only motorcycles and small trucks. A mid-range car like the Santa Fe was a focal point of attention.

Jin Yunho also stopped his work and looked down: someone coming to the restaurant in a Santa Fe? We've never had such high-end customers here.

The mystery was quickly solved.

The car door opened, and Shin Dongha got out, putting on a show.

"Wow, you've really made it, buying a car?" Jin Yunho got off the stool, ripped off his mask, and exclaimed in surprise.

"Haha, don't tease me, boss. This car costs 25 million won; I can't afford it," Shin Dongha replied with a strange smile.

"Hmm? Did your family buy it for you?" Jin Yunho circled the car, looking and asking.

"My stingy dad wouldn't spend that much on me. Besides, his car is a Hyundai Veloster. How could he buy me a better one?"

Jin Yunho glanced at him and said irritably, "Brat, hurry up and tell me where you got this car. It looks almost new. Did you borrow it from a friend?"

"Haha, not borrowed from a friend. Boss, this is your car. Come on, take a look. How does it look?" Shin Dongha revealed the secret with a show of pride, then pulled Jin Yunho to get in the car.

"Wait? My car? Are you kidding me?" Jin Yunho knew his own worth; how could he suddenly have a car of his own? "Shin Dongha, we work in inspections; we can't break the law."

Seeing Jin Yunho's serious expression, Shin Dongha felt it was no fun, wanting to surprise Jin Yunho but ending up giving a lecture: "Boss, this really is your car."

"Boss, your phone hasn't been answered. No wonder you didn't know. Your transfer order has come through. You've been promoted to a third-level prosecutor. Wow, that's impressive! Here, this is the car the company assigned to you. I waited for the news at the office this morning, then handled the procedures for you and received the car to pick you up."

Shin Dongha explained the whole situation, clarifying the matter.

Realizing he had become a third-level prosecutor, Jin Yunho smiled, thinking: It's done.

But before he could say anything, two high-pitched screams came from behind, making his ears ring.

"Oh my!" Jin Yunxi's voice was the loudest.

"Oh my... Is this our Yunho's car? Our Yunho has become a prosecutor?"

Zheng Daqin staggered to Shin Dongha, grabbed his hand, and shook it vigorously, asking in disbelief.

"Yes. Are you his mother? Hello, I am Assistant Investigator Shin Dongha, the assistant to Prosecutor Jin Yunho. You didn't hear wrong! Your son has indeed become a prosecutor, and a third-level one at that. He will be working at the Seoul Gangnam District Prosecutors' Office," Shin Dongha bowed respectfully and explained in detail.

Zheng Daqin didn't know the specific levels of prosecutors, but in her understanding, a prosecutor at the district office was much higher in status than one at a branch office. Seeing her son not only become a prosecutor but also work at the district office with such a good official car, she was overjoyed.

She didn't know how to express her happiness, and her dry hands didn't know where to go, instinctively wiping them on her apron. She never dreamed that her son would be so ambitious, becoming a prosecutor, and that her poor family would have a chance to turn things around.

Jin Yunxi was also ecstatic. She threw away the mung bean soup, not caring about the paint on Jin Yunho's body, and jumped onto him, crying and laughing. Her thoughts were simple; she was just genuinely happy for her brother.

Seeing this, Jin Yunho felt a bit choked up.

He comforted the mother and daughter, then found an excuse to escape: "Mom, I've finished painting the signboard. I'll go back to the office first; I might need to handle some entry procedures."

"Okay... Okay, go quickly. Don't worry about things at home. When you get to the office, be friendly and respectful to your seniors..." Zheng Daqin smiled and nagged tirelessly.

"Okay... Okay, I know."

With Zheng Daqin's nagging, Jin Yunho changed his clothes, tidied up, and left with Shin Dongha.

In the car, Jin Yunho sat in the passenger seat and checked his phone, finding indeed over a dozen missed calls. Some were from Shin Dongha, some from the district office's personnel department, and one was from Li Xiaoran.

He called back the personnel department and Li Xiaoran. The call from the personnel department was simple, just notifying him to return to the office quickly to handle the entry procedures.

Li Xiaoran's call was unexpected. The noble woman called just to congratulate him, which surprised Jin Yunho. When did they become so familiar?

Jin Yunho couldn't figure out Li Xiaoran's true intentions, so he didn't waste any more brain cells.

After hanging up, he said, "Pee King, let's go back to the office first to handle the entry procedures."

"As you wish, Third-Level Prosecutor Jin Yunho," Shin Dongha said proudly. With Jin Yunho's promotion, he also benefited, feeling very happy and no longer caring about the nickname 'Pee King.'
