Chapter 1: The Golden Era

8 min read1,964 words

The rustling sound of the fine rain gradually faded, leaving behind a misty haze like a veil of fog.

In the mist, a small city was nestled amidst countless towering trees on the vast land. The black city walls, standing a hundred meters high, separated the city from the jungle. The city was square and seamless, without even a single gate, making one wonder why it was built in such a manner!

Upon closer inspection, the city walls and buildings were constructed entirely from a type of black stone.

The first rays of dawn pierced through the mist, shining on the surface of the small city. The refracted sunlight scattered into a kaleidoscope of colors, but once these rays touched the black stones of the city, they were completely absorbed, leaving not a trace.

Seeing this, one couldn't help but wonder what kind of city this was. What kind of city could absorb all light, perfectly hiding itself in the wild jungle? Most life forms yearn for light, and unless they naturally prefer darkness, there was only one reason: survival...

Ding!

The mechanical alarm clock rang out in a series of clear, urgent chimes.

In the dark basement, where not a single ray of light could be seen, two flashes of black electricity suddenly appeared as the alarm sounded.

Yuanxiao turned on a dilapidated bedside lamp. Under the bright light, the young man's pitch-black pupils contained a hint of black light that seemed to devour light, much like the cold and merciless black stones of the strange city.

He casually pressed the alarm clock and flipped out of bed, quickly dressing and washing in the corner of the dilapidated basement.

As the young man finished getting ready and prepared to leave, the black light in his eyes gradually faded, leaving only a hint of liveliness. At this moment, there was no trace of the chilling and evil gaze; instead, his eyes were clear and warm, like those of a neighbor's boy.

"Another new day..."

Yuanxiao pushed open the basement door and walked up the stairs to the ground floor.

This area was the slum of the small city, though this was the perspective of the city's residents. In reality, to people from other cities, the entire small city was just a slum, as it had not produced a great professional for over a decade.

"Professional, truly a name that inspires longing."

Yuanxiao's lips curled into a strange smile, a mix of mockery and disdain, but all the oddity vanished in an instant. At this moment, the young man appeared to be just an ordinary boy, as numb and mediocre as the passersby on the street.

The sky was still misty, with a few drops of rain occasionally falling. The morning fog brought a touch of humidity to the small city.

Boom!

On both sides of the street, black stone pillars suddenly burst into intense flames, like street lamps.

When these black stone pillars burned, it marked the beginning of the day in the small city. Of course, their light was also completely absorbed by the higher buildings, only illuminating the streets. But this was enough to bring the once dead city to life.

It was now six in the morning, and the wide streets of the small city were beginning to see the early appearance of vendors. During this early morning, vegetables and fruits were freshly picked from the fields, and the relatively wealthy residents of the slum would buy them all up.

"Today's weather is really nice..."

Yuanxiao breathed in the clean air of the morning mist and quickly walked down the street.

As a non-professional and an orphan without parents, the poor residents of the small city naturally had no one to kindly take him in. He had to work hard from early morning to survive.

Of course, this was just the residents' speculation.

As he walked along the street, passersby moved aside, both envious and fearful.

Yuanxiao glanced at the badge on his collar, a gray badge with an ancient magic wand floating in a silver star. The passersby were not afraid of him but of the identity represented by this badge: the only professional in the city's servant.

Just the status of being a professional's servant was enough to make all the poor people fear him.

Not far away, an old man selling vegetables lifted the oilcloth covering his stall. This level of rain and mist would not harm the vegetables; instead, it would make them more fresh and add a bit of weight.

Suddenly, a gentle breeze blew through the rain, lifting a few specks of mud from the vegetable leaves.

The mud and water flew through the air and landed on the face of a young man dressed in fine clothes.

The young man raised his hand, and his clean, long fingers wiped away the mud and water.

Yuanxiao also noticed this unexpected scene and immediately darted to the side of a wall without looking back, only polishing the badge on his collar and quietly waiting for the impending tragedy.

"Scum... you're asking for death!"

The young man's eyes blazed with anger, and a short staff appeared in his hand, which he waved lightly at the old vegetable seller.

The short staff emitted a green light, and a pale green wind blade tore through the thin rain, executing a beheading in the old man's terrified gaze.

"Bad luck!" Yuanxiao cursed in his heart.

As the last of the thousand slum cities near the legendary main city, the small city of Chaoyang had only one professional guarding it. What kind of bad luck had he encountered today, to run into a professional who hadn't appeared in the city for years?

"You... come here..."

The young man pointed his staff at Yuanxiao, the gray badge piquing his interest.

"I greet the professional, sir." Yuanxiao quickly approached and bowed.

This was a normal greeting for a superior, but in the young man's eyes, it was unbearably offensive and made him feel ashamed and angry.

"Bold scum, you see me and don't kneel to pay respects."

The young man growled, raising his staff and glancing at the gray badge, reluctantly lowering it. If this scum were not someone's servant, if he were not just a new professional, and if he were not here to pick up some poor relatives, he would have cut off the scum's head with a wind blade like the previous one.

"An employee of Ollivanders Magic Wand Shop greets the professional, sir." Yuanxiao repeated seriously.

The young man's pupils contracted, his face turning red as he glared at Yuanxiao and turned away.

If it were just an ordinary scum, as a professional, he had the right to kill, as long as he didn't exceed one scum per year, whether for torture or dissection as magical experimental material. This was the basic right of a professional.

But an employee of Ollivanders Magic Wand Shop was not someone a new professional could touch.

Since he couldn't kill him immediately, gaining a verbal advantage would only make the surrounding scum laugh. The satisfaction and respect he had gained from the previous killing could not be lost because of this unwise scum.

"Another idiot who thinks he's something after gaining power."

Yuanxiao shook his head in disdain, but a hint of regret and envy shone in his eyes.

If possible, no one knew how desperately he wanted to become a true professional.

A professional must be born with the ability to sense the rules of the main plane to receive the professional template granted by the supreme will of the world, thus changing their fate and opening the first step towards becoming a powerful being.

Swish!

A status panel appeared before Yuanxiao's eyes, visible only to him.

Name: Yuanxiao.

"15 years... 26 years..."

A strange and excited look flashed across Yuanxiao's lips. He was originally just a 21-year-old student on Earth, though that was the official story. In reality, he was the acknowledged king of the assassination world in the dark world of Earth.

He did not suddenly travel through time or reincarnate; he was simply frozen in ice and spent three million years underground.

He clearly remembered the day when golden light pierced through the entire world, enveloping the sky and earth. No matter what material faced this golden light, it was coated with a layer of gold, and then he lost all his memories.

When he awoke again, he was frozen in a golden ice block in the underground world.

In this strange ice block, his consciousness was very clear, but he could not leave his body to see the outside world. He slept and woke, woke and slept, over and over again, for countless years.

When the entire ice block melted, he had already drifted out of an underground river to Chaoyang City.

At the same time, he was no longer a 21-year-old strong young man but had regressed to a ten-year-old child, as if time had flowed backward.

Faced with this new and strange world, Yuanxiao spent a whole year figuring out what had happened to him.

In the history of the world, the first year of the Golden Continent, the golden light of the origin descended upon Earth, causing it to explode and form the vast, endless Golden Continent. The newly born Golden Continent gave birth to the first batch of gifted professionals.

The first professionals were only one type: the high and mighty Planar Travelers.

Planar Travelers, as the name suggests, could travel between planes.

Around the newly born Golden Continent, there were countless imaginary planes, worlds identical to the ancient Earth, which evolved into semi-illusory, semi-real void worlds under the golden light of the origin.

Planar Travelers could enter these imaginary planes and bring back various wondrous knowledge and powers.

In the 75th year of the Golden Era, the first professional outside of Planar Travelers was born. They could not independently travel between planes, but they still had professional templates and could obtain wondrous powers in the imaginary worlds, becoming strong.

But that was the treatment at the beginning of the Golden Era. Now, it is the 152nd year of the 300th Golden Era.

The power system of professionals has long been mature. Planar Travelers who can open the gates to the imaginary worlds remain at the top, but this refers to powerful Planar Travelers, not a defenseless, tender newcomer.

Yuanxiao closed his professional template with a hint of regret. This power was more of a curse than a blessing to him.

Once people found out he was a rare Planar Traveler, his only fate would be to be well-fed and pampered, with the best food and the most beautiful women, but he would never have any power.

Because the force that kept him would only use him as a tool to open the gates to the planes.

Tools do not need power; with power, they would rebel and refuse to obediently open the gates for others.

So every new Planar Traveler, unless they came from a powerful force and had the strength to protect themselves, could only hide their talent and wait for the opportunity to become strong. Many Planar Travelers died before they had the chance to become strong.

"Damn... I've wasted time..."

Yuanxiao looked at his watch and, after a moment of reflection, hurriedly began to walk through the misty rain.
