SS 14: The Girlfriend Turning into an Urban Legend
Translated by: chocolalaEdited by: Seiryuu
“Well, I think I’ll read a book or something until Yuzu comes,” I muttered to myself in the literature club room, all alone.
Today, Yuzu would be a little late coming to the club room because she was on duty in the classroom. Normally, I would have helped with her class duty, but she said she was going to do it with her friends today, so I respected that and came here first.
“Let’s just take this one.”
I grabbed the book at random, sat down in my chair and opened the pages.
“Oh, I think I might like this.”
I picked this book out randomly, but as I read through it, I became quite engrossed. So I was lost in reading for a while when my smartphone buzzed.
I took it out and found a message from Yuzu.
[It’s Mary-san. I’m in the classroom right now.]
“Did my girlfriend finally become an urban legend…?”
I thought he was a legendary narcissist but never had I imagined she would become an urban legend. And the name is quite a goofy one—Mary1.
“She can’t even handle horror stuff, just what is she playing at?”
For now, though, I’d leave it alone since it won’t do any harm.
And when I read through the message without replying, I got another message.
[It’s Mary-san. I’m in the teachers’ room right now.]
“The faculty room, which means she went to turn in the logbook.”
That was the last task of the class duty. Once this was over, it meant Yuzu would soon come here.
[It’s Mary-san. I’m in front of the vending machine now.]
“She sure takes it easy after she’s done with her tasks.”
Well, she could at least have a little break after work.
A little while later, I received another message from Yuzu.
[It’s Mary-san. I’m at the sports ground now.]
“…Sports ground? What, were you taking a break in front of the vending machine and a friend caught you?”
I was getting somewhat curious about Yuzu’s whereabouts, so I put a bookmark in the book I was reading and closed it.
[It’s Mary-san. I’m at the batter’s box now.]
“Did they make her a helper for the softball club or something…?”
Well, she’s an amateur. She would be out in no time and come over here.
[It’s Mary-san. I’m at second base now.]
“Two base hits! She’s a surprisingly strong hitter!”
Come to think of it, she also claimed to be a good athlete. To my annoyance, she was a girl who had the ability to match her narcissistic remarks.
[It’s Mary-san. I’m at the entranceway now.]
“Oh, she’s done helping over there?”
Apparently, she only had to bat once as a substitute. Anyway, it looked like she was finally coming this way.
[It’s Mary-san. I’m in the culinary room now.]
“Eh, another detour…?”
So the culinary room this time? I recalled there was a culinary research club over there.
[It’s Mary-san. I’m in front of the cutting board right now.]
“Cutting board… Will she be doing okay? This girl…”
Yuzu called herself a smart and athletic person, but her cooking skills were rather questionable. I hope nothing happened to her…
[It’s Mary-san. I’m in the infirmary now.]
“It didn’t go well! As I thought, she must’ve cut her finger!”
On the contrary, it was so predictable that it came as a surprise!
[It’s Mary-san. I’m in the culinary room now.]
“Oh, did she go back there?”
She probably won’t use the knife anymore. Or rather, just don’t!
[It’s Mary-san. I’m in front of the cooking stove now.]
“Is she using the fire… will it be okay?”
[It’s Mary-san. I’m in the infirmary now.]
“It didn’t go well!? As I thought, she got a burn!”
I wondered if she would look like a rag by the time she came to the literature club room.
[It’s Mary-san. I’m in the culinary room now.]
“She’s back again! You never learn, do you, girl!”
She always showed an unyielding fighting spirit in the strangest places.
[It’s Mary-san. I’m sitting in a chair in the corner right now…]
“She was asked not to do anything! She was isolated from the cooking area by the culinary club!”
I was feeling sorry for the inconvenience she had caused to the people in the culinary research club, but I’d rather ask why they let this girl try her hands in cooking, twice even.
[It’s Mary-san. I’m in front of the literary club room.]
“What? Are you finally here? I’ll open the door now-“
I unlocked the door and opened it. Immediately, the smell of ketchup drifted in.
“Yoo-hoo! Yamato-kun. Sorry, I’m late. I was making Neapolitan spaghetti at the culinary research club just now. I’d like to share this with you!” Yuzu presented me with a Neapolitan spaghetti on a paper plate.
“Yuzu… you made this?” I confirmed it with her, and she nodded proudly.
“About half of it!”
“Really, half?”
“…About a third.”
“…”
“…About a quarter.” Yuzu was defeated by my silent pressure.
I no longer knew whether I could still call this her handmade food.
“By the way, this looks like it has sausages in it.”
“Oh, yeah. I put them in.”
“Um… can I check Yuzu’s hand, just in case?”
“What’s with the fearful inquiry? I have all my fingers! What you have there is a 100% pure sausage!”
Yuzu put the paper plate on the table and showed me her ten fingers with a flash. There were a few band-aids on them, but they were all in place.
“Well, good. I’ll eat it then… May it not taste like blood.”
“You don’t need that prayer at the end!”
Yuzu’s cheeks were puffed up, but she looked nervous as if she was wondering about how I thought about the food. Meanwhile, I took a bite of the food and opened my eyes.
“It’s amazing… It tastes like Neapolitan!”
“That’s because I made Neapolitan!”
“Great job, Yuzu! You’re far more skilled than I ever imagined! I’m impressed!”
“Isn’t that too low a bar? On the contrary, I feel like I’m being mocked!”
For some reason, Yuzu seemed to be unhappy with my impressed reaction.
