Chapter Sixteen
"Madam Akara, why are you telling me this?" I said in a low, stiff voice, looking around nervously as if I were a member of an underground party, afraid that someone might suddenly appear and accuse us of being traitors and heretics.
Does she trust me that much? What if I'm a loyal follower of the divine? Even if I can't make others believe that Akara is a heretic, having someone with strong hostility towards her would be enough to make anyone think twice. Or does she have the confidence to keep me from resisting or to eliminate me on the spot? The thought made me break out in a cold sweat. Indeed, these leaders, no matter how kind-hearted, can be decisive when necessary.
But why would she risk being labeled a heretic by telling me these secrets? Wouldn't it be enough to just show the ordinary version that circulates among the people? What makes me worth such a risk?
"Wu." This was the first time Akara formally called my name.
"I am Akara, a follower of the Great Eye. Although my eyes are blind, under the guidance of the Great Eye, I have never been wrong about anything." Akara turned around, wearing a calm smile.
"The Great Eye will never deceive me. I trust myself, so I trust you."
"Madam Akara, I must say, you have a remarkable faith in a god!" I sighed, indirectly indicating my stance.
I hope this doesn't burden me with anything heavy. My wish is simply to find a wife and live a quiet life; I have no intention of shouldering the weight of history.
Akara seemed very satisfied with my answer, nodding happily and continuing.
"When God grew tired of the divine and demonic races and discovered the birth of the Dark Continent, he created many creatures, with humans at the forefront, to prevent another Armageddon. He weakened their abilities, and after completing the construction of the entire Dark Continent, he suddenly disappeared."
What a irresponsible God, I suddenly understood why many of the rules in this world are so crude. Everything is the fault of this lazy God.
"After God created us and disappeared, the Dark Continent flourished over thousands of years, with more and more races establishing their unique customs and civilizations."
Akara's expression was ever-changing. At one moment, her tone was filled with barely contained excitement and longing, as if she had witnessed the development of the Dark Continent firsthand. The next moment, her expression turned solemn and sad.
"But disaster soon followed."
"As the continent's civilization developed, more and more explorers emerged, their interest being to explore every unknown inch of the Dark Continent. Then, at some point, someone, somewhere, discovered a magical stone in a cave in the north of the Dark Continent, the homeland of the barbarians, known as the peak of the world, Harrogath. This stone had mysterious powers, and they named it the Worldstone. Countless scholars and mages were drawn to it, traveling great distances and enduring hardships to see it in Harrogath."
"After centuries of tireless research by numerous scholars, they finally discovered the purpose of the stone—this massive stone was actually a portal to another world. The adventurers were overjoyed and, after confirming that the other side was safe, they eagerly stepped through the portal to another world."
"Quickly, through their exploration, they found that this new world was astonishingly similar to the one they originally inhabited, almost like a twin. Thus, large-scale migrations began, and they established kingdoms and tribes, naming them the same as those in their original world." She sighed and smiled at me.
"You will go to that world in the future, so don't be surprised. There is also a Rogue Encampment there, but the people are different. If I remember correctly, the leader of that Rogue Encampment should still be Haggars. It's been a long time since we last met. When you go there, remember to say hello for me." She smiled, seeing me standing there in shock.
"Ah, look at me, I've gone off-topic again. I'm old, and I tend to ramble. Hmm, where was I...?"
"Because of the similarity between the two worlds, the adventurers began a new journey. They thought, if the two worlds are so similar, then perhaps there is another Worldstone in this world, just like in their original world. So, they returned to Harrogath, hoping to find another Worldstone."
"Perhaps the two worlds were indeed too similar, for they actually found another Worldstone there. Since the principle of the Worldstone was already well understood, they immediately set off for the third world. And the third world was also identical to the first two, I wonder what God was thinking when he created these worlds!" Akara shook her head with a bitter smile, seemingly as exasperated with this lazy God as I was.
"Since they had discovered a third identical world, the events that followed were the same as when they discovered the second world—migration and large-scale exploration. These adventurers seemed to be at odds with God, determined to find a different world. So, they ventured into the Harrogath of the third world..."
"Akara's voice became bitter, her eyes gradually turning red, her voice filled with沧桑 and sorrow, and her gentle expression turning dark and resentful.
"Damn it, they succeeded. They finally found a world different from the first three, but... but...
"But what greeted them were the original inhabitants—countless demons. The Worldstone of this cursed third world was actually connected to Hell..."
"These adventurers hastily retreated and attempted to destroy the Worldstone, but its strength far exceeded their imagination. In the end, they could not damage it in the slightest. Then, led by the five great demons—Andariel, the lord of suffering and torment; Andari, the lord of pain; and the three greater demons above them—Mephisto, the lord of hatred; Diablo, the lord of terror; and Baal, the lord of destruction—the demonic army poured in from Hell. They found the life here to be pitifully weak, the land fertile, the sun bright, and the climate pleasant, not much different from Heaven and far better than the scorching, lava-filled Hell. This was a pristine land...
"The adventurers knew they had made a grave mistake. To atone for their error, they took it upon themselves to resist the forces of Hell, but how could they possibly stand against the might of Hell!"
"What happened in the end? Was the third world taken over by Hell?"
I asked urgently. If what Akara said was true, then history had completely diverged from the game's dark background. Before me was a completely new and unfamiliar world, which meant I could no longer rely on any advanced information to gain an advantage.
"No."
Akara shook her head. "At a critical moment, the angels 'timely' broke the seal between Heaven and the Dark Continent, turning the tide."
At this point, the sarcasm in her voice was evident even to a fool.
"However, the angels descended through special means and could not remain on the Dark Continent for long, as their powers could not be replenished there. Therefore, they could not decisively influence the battle, only guiding the creatures of the Dark Continent to resist Hell. In this, they did their best."
"The battle in the third world, under the leadership of the angels and the desperate efforts of the forces of the Dark Continent, reached a stalemate. Although the Dark Continent was at a significant disadvantage, they managed to hold back the forces of Hell in the third world."
"Soon, a turning point arrived. The four great demons, led by Andariel and Andari, rebelled against their superiors, the three greater demons—Mephisto, Diablo, and Baal. The entire demonic army fell into chaos."
"The angels saw their opportunity and gave us the three Soulstones, instructing us to seize the chance to seal the three greater demons. With the all-out effort of all living beings on the Dark Continent, we finally sealed the three greater demons. Among them, the greatest hero to emerge was the wizard, Tal Rasha, who, with his own strength, sealed one of the three greater demons, Baal, a feat of great significance.
"This counterattack on the Dark Continent, second only to the Armageddon in history, was the most famous and brutal War of Sin."
Mentioning Tal Rasha, even Akara's voice grew passionate. It seemed that this great wizard, Tal Rasha, was indeed worthy of his reputation.
"After that, humanity launched a general offensive against Hell, finally gaining the upper hand for the first time.
However, after a thousand years of war, just when humanity thought victory was within reach, the three greater demons suddenly broke free from their seals and reappeared in this world, shattering the Dark Continent's advantage.
Fortunately, the three greater demons were still weak after their release and were also engaged in internal conflict to avenge the rebellion of the four great demons. This situation has persisted to the present day..."
"Ah... young man, that's the end of my story." After speaking, Akara seemed to discard all her previous emotions and returned to her cheerful self.
I nodded absentmindedly, my mind rapidly analyzing what Akara had said.
There were still many questions, such as why the angels suddenly appeared when the demonic army arrived. Was it a coincidence, or...? Also, why didn't the angels give the three Soulstones to humans earlier, and why were there only three, not five? Why could the three greater demons, once sealed, escape from the Soulstones? There were too many questions.
