In the afternoon, when they were eating in the canteen, the director came in to inform everyone that in the evening, they were to go to their classrooms based on their grading to film the scheduled program of calling a family member.
There were two parts of the main content, one was to inform the other party of their initial rating during the call, and the second was for the trainee to talk about the rating they were aiming to get during the next re-rating.
The trainees hurriedly finished their meal and rushed back to their hostel rooms to wash their hair and put on their makeup. Only Lin Ye and Xia Dongchan were left, slowly enjoying their buffet dinner. They then ate the desserts that were so popular that they were impossible to get if the trainees were late for dinner. Only after they were done did they head back to the practice rooms to practice their dance.
There were only a few people left in the practice room. Lin Ye wore the class uniform of Class D and followed Xia Dongchan to enter the spacious and bright classroom of Class B.
Lin Ye sat cross-legged on the floor and looked at Xia Dongchan, who was standing in front of the media player to fast forward the teaching video, “Your classroom is bigger than ours.”
Xia Dongchan pressed the pause button and turned his head back to say, “That’s because you’ve never seen Class A before. Their classroom is truly big.”
Lin Ye used his hands as a pillow for his head and stretched out his two legs, tilting his head and saying lazily, “It’s not my classroom. No matter how many times I look at it, it’s useless.”
“How can it be useless!” Xia Dongchan knelt in front of him and held his hands excitedly, “After I went to see it, I became even more determined to get a higher grading next time,” He looked at Lin Ye with light in his eyes, “Lin Ye, three days from now, let’s enter Class A together.”
Lin Ye closed his eyes and lay on the floor. He did not speak.
Xia Dongchan had a face that did not match his heart.
Unlike his gentle and handsome features, he had a strong sense of ambition in his heart. Careless opponents tended to take Xia Dongchan lightly.
This was the so-called ‘acting like a pig to eat a tiger’, this phrase was very suitable to be used on Xia Dongchan.
(T/N: This phrase means that you act weak when you’re actually strong, causing opponents to take you lightly, which makes them easier to win against)
As for Lin Ye, it was probably because he was lazy and had an unwillingness to fight for resources that he was able to get closer and closer to Xia Dongchan.
After all, his original reason for entering the company was for the money, but Xia Dongchan entered the company only for one purpose, that is to be famous.
During the recording at night, Lin Ye was scheduled to record his portion quite early. When he was called in by the staff, he came out in less than half a minute.
The other trainees in his group asked him for the reason nervously. Lin Ye just curved his lips into a smile and said very casually, “Everyone in my family has passed away, I have no one to call.”
The person who asked him said that he was dumb. He did not even take the opportunity offered to him to appear in front of the camera. The person said that he should have first called a friend, and when the director asked him who he called, he could use his family background to get the fans’ pity.
As that person spoke, he showed a proud look, “Tricking fans to get pity is the easiest thing to do. All you need to do is tell the camera that you don’t have any relatives to call, and they will cry as they yell in front of their phone screens, are my tears worthless? Mom’s heart is really aching for you!”
(T/N: The ‘Mom’ here is basically the imaginary fan addressing themselves as Lin Ye’s Mom, which is related to the idea of ‘Mom Fans’. These are fans that act as the idol’s mother. There are also ‘Girlfriend Fans’.)
Lin Ye was stunned by that person’s words. Finally, he gave the other person a perfunctory smile and turned his head to walk to Class B’s classroom and wait for Xia Dongchan.
He was quite lucky. When he walked over, he happened to see Xia Dongchan’s back. Lin Ye wrapped his two arms around his chest and leaned against the door, hearing Jiang Lian’s name being called on the other side.
Lin Ye turned his head around and his gaze met Jiang Lian, who was walking in his direction. Lin Ye had thought that Jiang Lian would simply walk past him without turning to look at him, but unexpectedly, Jiang Lian stopped walking and lowered his voice to say in a deep voice by Lin Ye’s ear, “You’re wearing Class D’s uniform but you dare to go to Class B’s practice room to practice your dance. You’re quite brave.”
Lin Ye was stunned. He knew that Jiang Lian had seen him, so he turned his head calmly, and retorted, “Why are you such a busybody? I’m entered Class B, not Class A.”
Jiang Lian did not respond. Then, he pushed the door and walked in.
The staff members were waiting by the camera. Taking his phone from the staff member, Jiang Lian sat on the high stool in front of the backdrop and called the elder brother of the Jiang family first. However, the person who answered the call was his secretary.
Jiang Lian switched the call to speaker mode and the secretary’s voice came out clearly from his mobile phone, “I’m sorry, Mr. Jiang, CEO Jiang is having a video conference right now.”
Jiang Lian calmly hung up the phone and called his family home, still on speaker mode. The voice of the housekeeper came out through the speaker, “Hello? Is this Xiao Lian? What? You’re looking for the Sir and Madam? They went overseas on holiday yesterday and will only return next month.”
(T/N: Xiao Lian is basically adding a 小 which means ‘small’ in front of Jiang Lian’s ‘Lian’. It’s somewhat of a nickname)
The staff were all trying to hold back their laughter.
The director could only use small interviews to extend his screen time in this segment. In the whole process, she asked a total of three questions.
The first question was: “Among all the trainees, who do you think can compete with you?”
Jiang Lian replied, “Ming Rang.”
The director’s eyes lit up slightly as if she had grasped a selling point. She deliberately led the topic to Ming Rang, “I heard that you and Ming Rang are childhood sweethearts, do you have nicknames for each other that you only use in private?”
(T/N: The phrase used here for childhood sweethearts/friends is ‘green plum and bamboo horse’, the female is normally called the ‘green plum’ and the male the ‘bamboo horse’. So here, there’s the connotation that one’s a female and one’s a male. This phrase can be used for childhood friends as well and doesn’t necessarily mean romantic relations but here, the director is trying to hint towards romance.)
