Thank you, Prince Dan, for your generous reward.
To respond to *Sad*’s ten recommendation tickets, I will definitely update twice today.
I originally planned to release a new book, updating once a day for the first month, taking a break, and saving a few chapters in reserve for emergencies. I would ensure two updates a day from the next month, so everyone doesn’t need to worry. I will keep updating once a day this month and will resume the standard two updates a day next month. Of course, if there’s a burst... cough, cough...
...
"Hmm?" Wang Peng was thinking about his true ability when he suddenly became distracted by the news on the TV.
At that moment, the news on the TV was about the train derailment accident he had seen that afternoon. Seeing this news, Wang Peng subconsciously thought of Claire, and his eyes narrowed slightly.
Soon, with Wang Peng’s skilled use of telekinesis, dinner was ready. After eating dinner, Wang Peng read a book for a while and then went to bed.
The next morning, Wang Peng rode his bicycle to school as usual. When he arrived at his class and sat down, he soon saw Claire greeting other classmates and walking over.
"Good morning, Claire." Wang Peng watched as Claire sat down in front of him and greeted her with a smile.
"Good morning." Claire also smiled and greeted Wang Peng.
On Wang Peng’s first day at school, he had chatted with Claire. In the following days, whenever he had free time, he would chat with Claire to build a connection. Although they were not strangers, they were not yet friends, having only known each other for a few days. They were more like familiar strangers, the kind who would greet each other if they met on the street.
"Claire, do you know about the serious accident that happened here yesterday? It was a train derailment. I was standing nearby and watched the firefighters put out the fire. It was quite a spectacular scene." Wang Peng asked Claire as if they were friends chatting casually.
"Um... I... I’m not quite sure. I only found out from the news on TV. Were you there?" Claire was taken aback by Wang Peng’s words, hesitated for a moment, and then replied with a forced smile.
"Hmm? You weren’t there? That’s strange. I thought I saw you there, wearing a cheerleading uniform." Wang Peng responded, feigning confusion.
"That... that... you... saw..." Hearing Wang Peng’s puzzled words, Claire’s body stiffened, her smile slowly faded, and she looked fearful and afraid, her voice becoming much softer.
"Maybe I was just seeing things. Hehe. There were so many people. Hmm? Claire, are you okay? You look a bit pale." Before Claire could finish speaking, Wang Peng loudly interrupted, then asked her with concern.
"Hehe... I... I’m fine." Seeing that Wang Peng was not pressing the issue and had not noticed her actions at the accident scene, Claire’s expression improved. Hearing Wang Peng’s concerned words, she forced a smile.
"Ring! Ring!" At that moment, the class bell rang, interrupting the conversation between Wang Peng and Claire. The teacher entered the classroom with the bell, stood at the podium, and called out to the students, "Alright, let’s start the class. Stop talking and turn to page fifty-two. Today we will..."
Seeing the class start, Claire visibly relaxed, immediately sitting at her desk. Her eyes were fixed on the teacher, and anyone could tell she was very nervous, her body tense.
"She’s still too young, just a child, and doesn’t know how to hide her emotions at all." Wang Peng, sitting behind her, watched Claire’s reaction, his eyes narrowing slightly. He propped his chin on his hand and played with a pencil, thinking to himself.
Wang Peng was testing Claire. He had seen her rush into the fire and save an injured person yesterday. Now, he was just observing her reaction. However, Claire was quite cooperative, showing no ability to conceal her thoughts, which were written all over her face.
Moreover, Claire seemed to place great importance on her secret and was very afraid of others finding out. When Wang Peng mentioned seeing her at the accident scene, her face clearly showed fear. She might have been afraid that others would think she was a monster after discovering her ability, as she was different from normal people. Wang Peng analyzed the psychology of a girl her age.
The class soon ended, and the bell rang. Claire quickly packed her textbooks into her bag and rushed out of the classroom without even saying goodbye to her close classmates.
"Something’s not right. Is she avoiding me?" Wang Peng watched as Claire fled the classroom and raised an eyebrow.
It seemed that high school girls were more sensitive than Wang Peng had imagined. In the following classes, Claire clearly distanced herself from Wang Peng, even switching seats with someone else. Now, the person sitting in front of Wang Peng was a curvaceous girl who often tried to flirt with him.
Wang Peng couldn’t help but shake his head. Claire’s behavior was not just suspicious; it was obvious to everyone that she was trying to hide something. Her strange behavior was practically telling Wang Peng that she had something to hide.
Now, Claire was like a frightened kitten, easily startled by any action. So, Wang Peng did not further provoke or test her but continued to act as if he were just a regular student, attending classes and taking breaks.
"Ring! Ring!" The morning classes soon ended, and the lunch break bell rang. All the students bustled out of the classroom to find a place to eat, go to the cafeteria, or return home if they lived close to the school.
Claire also left the classroom with the crowd. She was a cheerleader and the captain of the cheerleading team. Wang Peng had recently learned that the school was planning a competition with another school, and the cheerleaders were trying to practice as much as possible, including during lunch breaks.
Wang Peng, carrying his homemade lunch, followed the crowd out of the classroom. Instead of going to the cafeteria, he walked to the school’s square, which had several tiers of steps. Many students chose to eat here during lunch, and Wang Peng was no exception. Eating lunch here was very atmospheric.
Wang Peng found a step to sit on, opened his lunch box, and started eating. He watched the students passing by and the others sitting on the steps, enjoying the sounds of their conversations and laughter, truly feeling the atmosphere of school.
"Hmm?" Wang Peng slowly finished his lunch, packed away his lunch box, and patted his bottom to stand up. Just as he was about to leave, he noticed a police car driving into the school grounds, which immediately caught his attention.
Wang Peng watched as the police car stopped, and school officials greeted the people who got out. Two of them were very familiar to Wang Peng. He vaguely remembered that they were the firefighters who had discovered Claire saving the injured person at the fire scene.
"Could it be...?" Wang Peng’s eyebrows furrowed as if he had an idea. He paused his return to the classroom and followed the people who got out of the police car.
Wang Peng followed them to the cheerleading practice area, where the cheerleaders were lined up. The school officials were talking to the police. Wang Peng approached to get closer and listen to their conversation.
"They are all here, but you say that one of our school’s cheerleaders saved an injured person in yesterday’s accident. Is that true? Could you have mistaken someone else?" The school official asked the police.
"No mistake. Although the fire was intense and we couldn’t see clearly, the person was definitely wearing a cheerleading uniform from your school. I saw it clearly and am very sure," one of the firefighters who had seen Claire at the fire scene replied.
"Alright then." The school official nodded and then turned to the lined-up cheerleaders, asking, "You all know about the train derailment accident in our town yesterday. These are police officers. They say that one of our school’s students rushed into the fire and saved an injured person but left without giving their name. The person was wearing our school’s cheerleading uniform. Who among you saved that person?"
Hearing the school official’s words, the cheerleaders were taken aback and began to whisper among themselves. They were surprised that one of them had the courage to rush into the fire to save someone and then leave without revealing their identity.
This would be understandable in the East, but even the great Lei Feng, who did good deeds anonymously, would write about them in his diary for others to discover. In the West, this was unheard of.
Claire, standing at the far left, representing the cheerleading captain, was the farthest from the police. Hearing the school official’s words, she froze, her pupils dilating, unsure of what to do.
"What to do! What to do! What to do!" This phrase kept repeating in Claire’s mind. She never expected the firefighters to come to the school to identify her.
Claire clearly remembered the firefighters’ shocked and bewildered expressions when they used a coat to extinguish the flames on her body and tore open her sleeve to check for burns, only to see smooth, unburned skin.
If her secret was discovered, what would happen to her? Would she be treated as a monster? Or worse, would she be secretly taken by a government research institution, dissected, and subjected to various experiments, as in the movies?
Claire’s mind was filled with these chaotic thoughts, and the more she thought, the colder she felt. Despite the pleasant weather, she felt as if she were standing in a cold wind.
"Not good." Standing not far away, Wang Peng heard every word of the conversation between the school official and the police and saw Claire’s condition, thinking to himself.
