VOLUME 2 – ACADEMY ENTRY

Magic Power Check

NT: So, yeah, do you remeber that the last time i told you that there was something a wanted to tell you? Well, it’s about the novel… errrm, first of all, it is not some bad news… kinda… Errrm, as some of you may know, this novel is… unfinished… the author stoped posting new chapter shortly after they finished with the Light Novel, so, yeah, this, the Web Novel, doesn’t have a real, ending… now, that’s not the case with the LN. Errrm, now, the thing, both version, WN and LN, seems to be pretty much the same… until the 6th arc/volume. There is a few little differenst along the whole serie, like, a few lines among other thing (the bigger one is this arc end. It seems to be different on the LN, i’ll explain later), but, that didn’t happen on the 6 arc/volume. You see, the 6 arc of the WN and the 6 Volume of the LN share a few chapter… at the beggining, like, the first 2 or 3 chapters are the same, ¿but the rest? completly differen. So, i like to believe that, although the author decided to take their time with the WN, that wasn’t the same with the LN, and there they decided to skip the rest of the 6 arc and the 4 or 5 arcs that came later and just jumped to the end. Now, ¿why do i think that? Because the sinopsis of the 6 volume of the WN and the beggining of the last arc the author started on the WN seems to be pretty much the same, or, well, kinda, so, i want to believe that the end of the LN is the same end that the WN would have had if the author wanted to finished, so, even though the web novel doesn’t have a real ending, this story’s ending does exist, so, errrm, well, you get were’s this going, ¿right? We’ll still are gonna see the ending, now, there still a few thing on my head, but, yeah, that, this thing isn’t gonna be just another unfinished piece of crap like many other around… that’s all, just wanted to let you know that.

Former Hogos’ Territory • Current Din’ Territory.

A Magic Research Laboratory had been built on an old excavation site.

Alex and I were walking along a mountain path that led there.

By the way, Shadiberga resumed his work at the mansion.

On the other hand, Wokins still hadn’t returned by the time I left the mansion with Alex.

It has been a long walk.

I’ve started to sweat a lot since we started down this steep trail.

However, Alex calmly walked ahead while taking small strides.

It’s a bit irritating.

I must go faster.

「Is that true? That thing about being one of the Four Wises of the Continent?」

「How stubborn.

It should be something obvious if you saw the overwhelming amount of magical power that we possess in our bodies.

We are undoubtedly the strongest magicians on the continent」

… That way of speaking makes me believe that I am talking to an old man.

Also, she speaks in a quite casual way.

I wonder if she has been influenced by the big cities.

Anyway, the Evil God was sealed 500 years ago.

If what she said is true, then that means Alex is over 500 years old.

I know that one of the main characteristics of elves is that one cannot judge their age just by their appearance.

That’s common knowledge.

But is it possible to stay unchanged after so long?

「Well then. What would happen if you fought against me?」

「You would die. That would happen」

「I am very confident in myself」

「You will still be inferior to me even after you have learned every single spell you can find.

Also, generally speaking, elves are far superior to humans」

「Isn’t that some kind of cheat?」

But even so, humans see them in a completely different way.

That different point of view reaches the degree in which the nobles come to treat them as mere toys.

Well, I suppose it is normal to have certain disadvantages considering the many talents with which they are gifted.

However, I don’t agree that Alex is stronger than me.

I should be able to recognize anyone who possesses a large amount of magic power.

In those cases, the magic power that accumulates in their bodies should overflow causing others to feel a certain kind of pressure just from being close to them.

However, I felt absolutely none of that from Alex.

She seemed like ordinary person with no talent for magic to me.

Actually, I couldn’t feel the slightest bit of magic power coming from her body.

「You-, you can suppress your magic power?」

「Not that I’m hiding it or anything. It’s just that my container of magic power is too big.

I’ve reached the point where it can hold an amount equal to the magic power of every mage in the country combined without any problem.

That’s why you can’t just judge my ability, even if you evaluate me rigorously」

「Do you usually hide the fact that you are one of the Four Wises of the Continent?」

「It’s annoying when they come to bother me about it.

I prefer not to interfere with the affairs of the continent.

I will be satisfied as long as I can continue my investigations in peace」

「Sounds annoying」

I end up leaving her book aside shortly after start reading it.

At the time, I thought the things she had written on it were too exaggerated, so much that I was stunned by how absurd it all sounded.

But even so, the same author who wrote it turned out to be a much more absurd person.

I cannot believe that the Four Wises of the Continent are such powerful individuals.

By the way, this girl seems to have know Shadiberga for a long time.

So much so that she might know some things that he would not like her to reveal.

Well, this is my chance.

I’m sure that talking to one of Shadiberga’s acquaintances will be fun.

「How did Alex and Father meet?」

「It was while I was still at the Academy. At the time when Sefina’s sister was still studying at the Academy.

Back then he had become my assistant」

「The Academy? But Father didn’t enroll in it」

「Shadiberga is the third son of the Din Family.

Originally, becoming the Head of his House would have been impossible for him, so he tries to find a job at the Academy.

The Academy did not have great requirements to work in it. Even commoners could do it」

That is something new.

Did Shadiberga have siblings?

Even so, he’s the Head of Din House now.

And I never actually heard anything about him having a brother.

I wonder if there was any conflict between them when he became the Head of the family.

Although, from his atmosphere, I don’t feel like anything particularly tragic actually happened to him.

「Well, back then I took Shadiberga as my subordinate and made him work day and night without rest.

He never complained when I kicked him or used him as a test subject for my experiments, so he was perfect for the position.

At that moment I was able to advance a lot in my investigations thanks to all the abuse that I caused him」

「… So he was a slave, uh」

So, are you a mad scientist?

However, it seems that Shadiberga had an interesting past.

In the first place there is the existence of some mysterious brothers.

After that is his relationship with one of the Four Wises of the Continent.

I wonder if one day I will discover the truth behind all these secrets.

Still, Shadiberga also seems to have had a complicated life.

That may be what shaped the personality he has today.

It seemed strange to me that he did not collapse despite everything that happened to him.

Well, it actually turns out that the daily routine that he had to endure in his youth was much worse.

「Well, back then there were still several people who were against me.

I was almost expelled from the Academy actually.

But at that moment Shadiberga began to work stubbornly just to help me」

「What did he do?」

「He began to gather evidence to clear my name and prove my innocence」

「…… He~e」

「I was very surprised at that moment.

I had believed that he would do the complete opposite at the time.

I believed that he would definitely side with those who were against me and aim to my downfall.

That’s why I was so surprised when he suddenly appeared speaking on my behalf in the middle of the conference in which they “exposed” my crimes」

Sounds like something Shadiberga would do.

No matter what happens, he will always go to extremes once he has made up his mind to protect someone.

I can still remember how violently he reacted when Sefina was insulted.

Commoners love Shadiberga for his gracious personality, however he also has his limits.

「Well, he ended up being subdued the moment he intruded on the audience」

「… Yeah, it really sounds like something that would happen to Father」

「After that he leave the Academy with me.

Anyway, they ended up firing me. Although they didn’t do anything to Sefina’s sister despite having entered on my recommendation.

Well, I had already done a lot of work so I didn’t have much else to do there either」

「By the way, how long ago did that happen?」

「At that time Shadiberga was about your age, so… Was it about 30 years ago? Although it seems to me like something that only happened yesterday」

「Your sense of time is so surprising that I even find it funny」

I can’t even imagine what goes through his head when talking about Shadiberga’s childhood.

Could it be that decades only seem like days after all the time you have lived?

•••••

It had been a few hours since we started walking by the time we were finally able to see the lab.

The building gave a nice feeling since it was built into the mountainside.

Although, I think I wouldn’t hesitate to silence the person in charge of building it if he told me something like, 『We will build it on top of the mountain』.

Alex frowned when she noticed the lab.

She seems to be worried about something.

「… Regis, right?」

「Yes, something’s wrong?」

「Has some kind of rumor related to the Evil God reached this place?」

「Maybe. Why do you ask?」

In this world there are a type of heterogeneous creatures which are clearly different from people.

To put it other words, I talk about demons.

These demons often form packs and attack people.

NT: In this case they refer to demons of the type monsters or beasts never seen before instead of beings with intelligence and tendencies to manipulate people.

On those occasions, the soldiers in the service of the Nobles assume the responsibility of exterminating these demons.

Truth be told, it is more common to fight a demon than a Noble.

Wokins often use swords or knives when facing a group of people, but when demons appear, she confronts them with bigger weapons.

Today she decided to use her claymore only because the other swords were under maintenance.

I wonder if Edgar was referring to her claymore when she mentioned wanting to use a weapon like hers.

Still, even though she practiced for years, she didn’t seem capable of using that great sword perfectly.

It is not the right weapon for a normal human due to its heavy weight.

Anyway, demons invaded the continent a long time ago.

These had been guided by the 『Evil God』, who struck the continent with their incredible magical power and overwhelming military strength.

At that moment, the Evil God was able to completely cover their body with magic and it was not revealed until the very end, when they were sealed.

Alex began to speak in anguish.

「The remaining forces of the Evil God have been getting stronger year after year.

It has reached the point where I am no longer even surprised when I feel a little of their disturbing magical power.

However, why is there so much magical power concentrated in this area of the border?」

「Hey hey, I may have a lot of magical power but I don’t think you should call it that」

「It’s different. Your magic power is strange, but it doesn’t give me that feeling of discomfort.

No, I mean that I feel the magic power of the Evil God flowing in these lands」

Don’t say such strange things.

This territory can be described with one word, 『Pacific』, and still you feel the magical power of the Evil God?

This territory has nothing to do with the place where it was said to have been sealed.

「Are you sure? You may have been confused」

「Nn, it may be possible. I wonder if I am worrying too much.

Maybe it’s because it’s been a long time since I last came to Din’s territory.

It might just be that I feel confused due to the sudden change in its atmosphere after it became a little more prosperous」

Alex began to think about that as she placed her hand on her chin.

I don’t understand what makes her feel so worried.

At the very least, this should be a territory considered one of the safest on the continent.

Shadiberga, I and the other inhabitants of the territory have been fighting hard against those who try to harm us to maintain our peace and tranquility.

It must be nothing more than a baseless fear.

But, there is something I would like to ask you about the Evil God.

「Hey, is it true that the Evil God is sealed somewhere in the current Empire?」

「That’s right. It was deep within a cave called, 『The Shrine of Demise』, which was located on a certain mountain.

We sealed the Evil God’s soul in a fountain at the bottom of the cave」

「That… Shouldn’t that be some sort of classified information exclusive to the Four Wises of the Continent?」

「It’s not like it’s something we bother to hide.

However, we ended up exhausting all our strength after sealing it so we didn’t try to tell anyone at the time either.」

「Still, it seems like the battle was worth it」

「So it seems」

Well, I suppose for now there is no reason why I should worry about the Evil God.

I am sure that if the Evil God is released, the situation will be very different from what is shown in RPGs.

I don’t know how strong the seal is, but it should at least be strong enough to allow me to peacefully enjoy my life.

However, there is still a question hanging over my head.

「Alex. What would happen to the continent if the Evil God was released?」

「It would be destroyed. No doubt. It wouldn’t stand a chance against them」

「Even with the Four Wises of the Continent?

How about gathering every soldier on the continent? Do you think they can confront them in that case?」

「What are you talking about?

One of the Four Sages of the Continent has already died of old age.

On the other hand, I have no idea where the other two are.

Furthermore, the three races, including my people, have begun to antagonize the corrupted nobility.

At this point they have no reason left to support the human kingdoms」

That’s true, I have no way of refuting that.

The bandits did not hesitate to arrive in droves when Elizabeth passed through our territory.

They had accepted the risk of capturing her because of all the miney they could get if they managed to sell her.

Today’s continent is very different from what it was hundreds of years ago. Now there is a tendency to look down on other races.

Due to the wishes of the nobility, members of the other races have ended up being treated as nothing more than toys.

This is not something that happens only in the Empire, the Nobles of the Kingdom have also carried out heinous acts against them.

One of the greatest proofs of the hatred felt by the races towards humanity are the elves, who for the most part have already wrought an intense hatred towards us humans.

「The continent is very different from what it was 500 years ago.

At that time, neither the small countries nor the great powers hesitated to join forces to fight, and thanks to that they managed to win.

However, both the Empire and the current Kingdom would surely be reluctant to do something like that.

They won 500 years ago. If the Kingdom and the current Empire unite, they will surely have the same strength as back then and will be able to win again.

But here comes the question.

Do you think the Kingdom and the Empire are willing to ally just because there is some reason to do so?」

「… That’s… Maybe?」

The relationship between the Kingdom and the Empire has always been tense.

One of them had been founded after the Evil God was sealed and after that began to develop at an accelerated rate, on the other hand, the other was a great country that had existed for the past 800 years.

On top of that, the two of them had collided numerous times over time.

No matter how you look at it, getting them to cooperate with each other is impossible.

The proud nobles of each country will surely flatly refuse this.

「The Kingdom is also in a precarious state.

Corrupt Nobles have held important positions and the authority of the current ruler has been called into question.

Facing the Evil God in their current state is impossible」

「… In that case, we can only pray that the Evil God does not return」

Alex nodded regretfully.

Even so, she has fought powerful enemies.

She should be fine even if something happens.

But, I prefer to prepare the necessary measures to prevent that.

First of all, I should expand my contacts network.

I should make sure that Shadiberga’s projects move forward, gain more strength, and connect with some members of the other races.

I shall also try harder on making some new friends from now on.

While I was thinking about that, Alex and I continued moving along the mountain path.

◆◆◆◆◆

「So this is the lab」

「You look excited.

Well this place is related to the job you specialize in so I guess it’s no wonder you feel like this」

When we entered the building, we noticed that some new things had been installed.

There was a type of training machine made of some tough mineral.

Also a type of magic tool capable of probing the area which could be held by the user.

In addition to that, there were also several other items lined up which appeared to have been created by the researchers.

「I’d like to inspect how they’re made」

「Don’t use magic.

Their sensors react to the slightest amount of magic used on them」

「Understood」

Alex nodded obediently.

Well, this is supposed to be her first time here so it’s normal for her to be a little curious.

It might be a bit selfish of me, but I could also use the authority of my House to take a couple of items for her.

「Want to help?」

「*Fun*, There doesn’t seem to be anything that needs my assistance」

She refused.

She seems to be the type of person who prefers to do everything herself.

But he still looked like a curious cat, exuding an atmosphere that seemed to say that she wanted to get involved with everything that happened here.

I suppose the best thing to do is take a walk around the place to satisfy her curiosity.

We began to walk inside the laboratory.

During our walk we were able to see several researchers working at their desks.

Each of them seemed to be muttering things related to their own investigations.

Since I was somewhat interested, I decided to listen to their murmurs.

「… When the probability of unavoidable incoherence in the reversal of magical causality exceeds the expected rate that actually reaches the world, the internal pressure of the magical power that induced the remote magical excision phenomenon expands limitlessly…」

「… Kuhihi, ice magic. Kuhihi, magic so cold it freezes meat instantly. Kuhihi」

「 Wh-When a magic mineral is hit, it-it generates some magic power, b-b-but using the mineral itself, w-w-will not give any sa-sa-satisfactory results …」

I slowly covered my ears.

They seem to be people that I shouldn’t get too close to.

Did you conduct the interviews properly, Shadiberga?

I’ve never heard of such eccentric researchers.

As I thought about that, Alex fixed her eyes on the shelf in front of her.

She was looking at the objects that were on the shelf.

There were numerous magic stones from different parts of the continent.

Alex was trying to get to them by jumping, but it was still impossible to reach them.

I wonder what you want them for.

「Do you want me to reach them for you?」

「Stay out of it! I can do it alone!」

She stubbornly yelled at me.

No, but, it seems that you will not be able to reach them.

Although it is a height that I should be able to reach if I stretch my arm a little.

But, it’s impossible for Alex’s 12-13 year old body.

「You’re kind of a wisewoman, aren’t you? How about you use magic to take them?」

「At the Academy I was taught that using magic in labs was strictly forbidden. If someone intends to use magic inside one, they must first go to an isolation area that should be outside the laboratory」

「I see, then? How do you plan to take them?」

「… G-Gununu」

Alex bit her lip in frustration.

She was staring at the bookshelf as if it were some kind of sworn enemy.

But, it didn’t take long for her to come up with something.

At that moment Alex turned to me, with a look that made me think that she had gotten some kind of revelation.

「Alright, Regis. Become my bench」

「Bench? Why do you want me to do something so troublesome? I just need to stretch my arms a little to reach them」

「No use!」

「Ah?」

「That is no use!

It won’t make sense unless I take them with my bare hands!」

「For a Wisewoman to worry about that kind of thing …」

That wasted pride.

I think it has already reached the level where it becomes simply intolerable.

However, I depend on her so I cannot deny her request.

I seem to have no choice but to be obedient.

I crouched down and positioned myself so that she could climb onto my shoulders.

Then Alex climbed up my back and sat on my shoulders.

In that moment, I felt her tender, immature thighs pressing against me.

They don’t feel bad.

「Ready? I’ll stand up」

「Hurry」

It would be interesting if she turned out to be afraid of heights.

Well, I guess that won’t happen.

At that moment I quickly got up.

Then, I heard a horrible sound coming from somewhere above my head.

It was a dull sound, similar to what you would hear when you punch a stone.

I wonder what happened.

When I tilted my head to look up, I felt some tears falling on my face.

「T-That hurts! Why did you do that!?」

「I just got up. Something happened to you?」

「My head hit the ceiling! Think before you act stupid!」

「I-I’m sorry」

This laboratory has a particularly low ceiling.

Apparently because of that, Alex, who straightened up to get higher ended up hitting her head on the ceiling when I got up.

I wonder if she will try to get revenge later.

Alex started pressing my solar plexus with her heels as I thought about it.

However, that is not enough to make me feel some pain.

Even so, she kept doing it for a while until she was satisfied.

「Did you take it?」

「Fun~, this difference in height doesn’t make sense in front of me」

「I think it’s not correct to say that since I had to help you reach that place」

Alex smiled confidently.

She looks like a little girl trying to act like a high school student.

This sort of thing only makes me doubt her statement about being one of the Four Wises of the Continent even more.

I wonder why I have to meet so many disappointing people.

Is it because I was someone extremely disappointing myself?

I hope I don’t get to the point where I end up calling every disappointing person I meet a friend.

I knelt on the ground to let Alex down.

At that moment, Alex frowned.

Even so, although she looked clearly anxious, she immediately returned to her usual state afterward.

After that I helped her get off my shoulders.

I don’t think she’s going to get mad just because I helped her do that.

「Do you need that to write a report?」

「Umu. It is a Probing Magic Stone specialized in checking the affinity to attributes」

The attributes?

Like fire magic or thunder magic?

I remember Wokin used one of those in the past to check the amount of magic power I possess.

You say that this is able to examine the different attributes to determine the affinity to them?

「All right. I’m going to try something so follow me」

「Okay」

After she said that, we moved into the isolation room.

When we arrived, she began taking every item she found and analyzing its reaction to the magic power.

It only took a small amount of magic power to tell the difference in the way they reacted to the various attributes.

Alex analyzed each of these reactions in great detail.

Every time she got any results, she would start typing each piece of data she got while muttering, 『Hmm, hmm』.

She looks like a real researcher.

It took her a couple of hours to finish her magic power check.

By the way, Alex said she hurt her back when I carried her over my shoulders.

She said that walking on her own was too painful for her and forced me to help her go down the mountain back to the mansion.

As I did not seem to have any other choice, I ended up agreeing to carry her downhill.

Seriously, I have no idea how to treat her.

After that, I went back to the Din Mansion, not being able to shake off those doubts.

In the Mansion.

Alex, who was writing something, was still moaning in pain, even after taking a break.

G-Guh.

Now it’s hard for me to leave her alone.

Therefore, I decided to take care of her this time..

It seems that we will stay together a little longer.

I suppose I can take this opportunity to deepen our friendship.

Besides, Alex is also a cute girl.

I certainly can’t deny that I feel slightly excited about that.

I’d say I feel 90% more motivated just for that.

But don’t get me wrong, I have no bad intentions.

It may not seem like it, but she’s still much older than me after all.

Well, I’ll try to give her a prune tea to help her recover.

Ah, it’s a shame.

It seems that this drink does not exist in this world.

First of all, plums don’t even exist.

I have no choice but to give her regular tea.

But, when I tried, Alex suddenly refused, pushing the tea away while saying, 『I hate bitter things』.

You didn’t need to react that way.

It’s not nice to be rejected so harshly when I’m just trying to help.

But, it is a waste to throw it away.

After drinking the tea, I brew some sweet hot milk tea for her.

Then, Alex took the cup with a bright look and happily sipped his tea.

Spoiled brat.

NT: As always, if you find something weird, whatever, just tell me in the comments.
