Since Mother passed away, no one has celebrated my birthday for me. Although Prince Keith sent a bouquet of flowers every year, they were always placed in Cynthia's room, and I can now see that they were completely devoid of any genuine sentiment.
My 16th birthday was no different. It happened to be on a day off, but the daily routine of the ducal household remained unchanged.
“Congratulations, Margaret.”
“You’re 16 now.”
“I put the prince’s flowers in a vase like usual.”
The only ones who celebrated my birthday were always the fairies.
“Cookies, chocolate, mint. Thank you every year.
Just having all of you here makes me very happy.”
The fairies fluttered around happily at my words.
“Hey, this year is special.”
“Margaret’s mom has a letter for you.”
“We’ll show you the video.”
The moment Mint spoke, Mother’s image appeared before my eyes.
“No way.”
It was the Mother I knew, the one just before she passed away.
I instinctively reached out to touch her, but my hand stopped in mid-air.
The image of Mother looked around and then began to speak.
“Fairies? I’m sure you’re here, right?
Thank you so much for always protecting Margaret.
Even though I can’t see you, I have one request.
Could you please give this letter to Margaret on her 16th birthday?”
When Mother bowed, Cookie took the letter. To Mother, who couldn’t see the fairies, the letter must have seemed to disappear suddenly, and she looked very surprised.
“...Thank you.
Please continue to be by Margaret’s side.”
Mother smiled with the gentle face I loved so much.
The image ended, and Mother disappeared.
“Here’s the letter.”
“We’ve been holding onto it until today.”
“We’ll go play outside while you read it.”
The fairies handed me the letter from Mother and left the room.
Grateful for their kindness, I started to read the sudden letter from Mother, feeling both confused and excited.
However, the content that came into view was shockingly unexpected.
“You are not the true daughter of Duke Daniel Silver.”
