Chapter 2

Happy New Year!

So, I’m supposed to be Rubia’s bodyguard? But... If I, an assassin, were to be her bodyguard, it might give Rubia a bad impression...

“I’m sorry, I can’t do it.”

“Why not?”

“It’s because... my profession is...”

Saying the word ‘assassin’ is so tough... Why was I born into an assassin’s family? If I had to suffer this much, I would have preferred a more ordinary job. Then Rubia said with a slightly angry look on her face,

“You’re an assassin, right? We’ve been childhood friends, so I know that much. What? You can’t be a bodyguard because you’re an assassin?”

It’s been a while since I’ve seen her, who is usually so calm, speak so emotionally. As a member of the royal family, showing emotions is almost considered improper.

“If I were to be Rubia’s bodyguard, it might give a bad impression.”

“There’s no way that being an assassin would give the royal family a bad impression. And if you think that, why don’t you try to change the impression of assassins?”

“But...”

Even after being told that, I couldn’t make up my mind. I didn’t have the confidence to do something so significant. Besides, I didn’t want to see the only person of my age and a close friend be sad.

“Stop being so indecisive! It’s already decided! And as I said before, I’m your childhood friend. I think I know better than anyone how much training you’ve gone through. I can’t look down on someone like that.”

“...”

“I’m only going to say this once, so listen carefully. I trust you, Noah. Even if you were to kill me, I would think it was inevitable. Because it would be you, Noah, who would kill me. If I have to be killed by someone, I’d rather it be you. So have confidence. I trust you more than anyone else. You are the one I trust the most.”

“Ah...”

Words that a member of the royal family shouldn’t say. She said them in front of me. Realizing Rubia’s resolve, her trust, and the fact that she needed me, I started to sob.

“Idiot! Don’t cry! So, you’ll trust me too, right, Noah?”

“Yeah.”

“Then, will you be my bodyguard?”

“Yeah. I, Noah, will protect Rubia with my life.”

“Great! Then let’s go tell Mom and Dad!”

“Thank you.”

I hadn’t realized that there was someone so close who understood me... It was pathetic. Rubia even said things a royal shouldn’t, showing her resolve. If that’s the case, I want to respond to her.
