"043, please respond." A noisy voice came through the radio, accompanied by a command.
Muhammad picked up the radio, pressed the talk button, and replied in a muffled voice, "Received, received, 043 calling, 043 calling, hello, hello."
Muhammad retained all the memories from his previous life. As a former special forces soldier, he sometimes participated in joint military exercises with Russian and Central Asian armies. He could clearly express common military terms in Russian. Now, he deliberately pretended that the radio signal was interfered with, spoke a few sentences, and then turned off the radio.
Hwaja, sitting behind him, said to Muhammad, "We'll go over that mountain peak ahead, and we'll be out of the mountains."
The guerrillas lived in the mountains, where they were like fish in water. Now, however, they had to cross the mountain peak and enter the area near Jalalabad.
On the outskirts of Jalalabad, there was an airbase where Soviet Mi-24 helicopters were stationed.
After several battles, Muhammad's anger towards these helicopters had reached its peak. If he didn't take them out, the guerrillas would continue to be chased like rats. Therefore, he formulated this bold battle plan: to impersonate Afghan government troops, enter the helicopter base, and blow up those helicopters!
It was already late at night, and the operation had to be swift. They had to enter the Hind base before dawn to minimize the cost of the attack!
He only brought a dozen guerrilla fighters; the rest remained in the mountains to protect the villagers.
The BMP infantry fighting vehicle's engine roared, and the slope was almost at a 40-degree angle. The vehicle tilted as if it might flip over at any moment. Everyone tightly gripped the handrails, praying that it wouldn't flip over.
Finally, the vehicle reached the top of the hill and leaned forward again, ready to go downhill.
Muhammad's head was always exposed, which was the favorite way of armor troops. Inside, using a periscope, the view was too narrow, and it was more comfortable to look out this way.
The engine beside him kept roaring. After several days of continuous combat, Muhammad was still full of energy. He gazed into the distance, where the undulating mountains disappeared. The flat land between the northern and western mountains was Jalalabad.
Jalalabad is located in eastern Afghanistan, near the Pakistani border, with the Kabul River and Kunar River flowing nearby. It is the capital of Nangarhar Province, built by Emperor Akbar of the Mughal Empire, and was once a center of ancient Buddhism, visited by Faxian and Xuanzang. It is a key transportation hub between Afghanistan and Pakistan. When the Soviets controlled Afghanistan, it also became a key city with a heavy military presence.
What the Soviets did not expect was that when they overthrew the Afghan government and installed a puppet regime, the Afghan guerrillas sprang up like mushrooms after the rain. They were elusive and constantly ambushed the Soviets, who were exhausted by the constant attacks. Helicopters, with their mobility and rapid response capabilities, became a powerful weapon for the Soviets in their counter-insurgency operations.
If Muhammad wanted to make life better for the guerrillas in the mountains, he had to strike at the Soviets' weak point—destroying the helicopters!
On the flat land, the armored vehicle moved faster, driving on the dirt road towards Jalalabad.
At the mountain pass, they encountered a Soviet checkpoint, which guarded the entrance and exit of the mountains and had set up roadblocks.
Muhammad barely glanced and ducked his head, driving the armored vehicle past. Before they reached the roadblock, it had already been moved aside.
The soldiers at this checkpoint knew about the heavy losses the army had suffered in the mountains. A defeated and angry army could erupt at any moment, so they didn't even ask questions.
They never imagined that guerrillas could drive an armored vehicle out of the mountains. It was almost impossible because the guerrillas didn't know how to operate such vehicles.
A tracked infantry fighting vehicle was very different from a wheeled one. It had no steering wheel but was controlled by levers. The levers controlled forward, backward, and turning movements. Without training, it was impossible to operate.
However, these were not problems for Muhammad. This type of infantry fighting vehicle was similar to those in his home country, making it easy to handle. Not only could he drive an infantry fighting vehicle, but he could also operate a tank and even a helicopter, thanks to the extensive training he received in the special forces.
After passing the checkpoint, Muhammad re-emerged, and the headlights were turned on. They were now in a safe area.
After driving for several miles, Muhammad's expression became serious. In the open field outside the city, he could see the searchlights and the Hind helicopters on the tarmac.
The Soviets were highly alert, and it was almost dawn, the time when people sleep the deepest, yet they were still busy.
Under the searchlights, about seven or eight people were working on a Hind. The top engine cover was open, and the side panels were also open.

They were working nervously.
The Hind helicopters were originally designed to accompany armored units in Western Europe, but in the complex and varied mountains of Afghanistan, the Hinds' engines were underpowered and prone to mechanical failures due to various air currents, which placed a significant burden on the ground crew.
The base here was very rudimentary, with no hangars, and all maintenance and repairs were done outdoors.
There were also guards on duty around the perimeter of the base, and two T-62 tanks were used as fixed bunkers at the entrance, with Soviet soldiers patrolling inside.
The Soviets were so well-guarded that it was impossible to directly break in. While they could deceive the checkpoints in the mountains, they couldn't fool the Soviets here.
They had to come up with another plan to create chaos!
Muhammad stopped the vehicle and gave a brief instruction. Herman and a guerrilla fighter got out of the vehicle early, carrying a mortar, and disappeared into the darkness.
The infantry fighting vehicle continued to move forward, and all the soldiers inside were ready. They held their guns, ready to pop out of the hatches and eliminate the Soviets at any moment!
"Khvaja, aim as I taught you, don't rush," Muhammad said to Khvaja, who had climbed into the turret.
"Understood." A 73mm shell was loaded into the gun, and Khvaja pressed the button, watching the turret turn. Then, he focused on the sight. Since he was using the crosshairs to aim, and the distance was close, there was no way he could miss.
"Stop!" A Soviet soldier at the checkpoint stood in the road and shouted at the armored vehicle, "Which unit are you from?"
The armored vehicle stopped, and the driver emerged from the hatch, wearing an armored helmet and a black mask, and said, "From the mechanized infantry division. The guerrillas might attack the helicopter base, and the military command has ordered us to come for support."
The other side spoke formally, but if there was support coming, why hadn't they received orders from above? And something seemed off.
Right, the squad leader in the turret should have been the one to answer, not the driver. This squad leader was really arrogant! Thinking this, he became even more suspicious and shouted, "Wait here, I'll verify with my superiors."
He turned and walked back to the checkpoint to make a phone call.
Muhammad turned off the engine and the headlights, seemingly waiting casually.
The other guards stood on either side, watching the guard enter the booth and start making a call.
"Boom!" Suddenly, a burst of firelight appeared in the distance. A mortar shell was launched from afar, whistling sharply as it flew into the airbase and exploded on a tarmac.
Fortunately, there were no helicopters there, but a squad of Soviet soldiers who had just patrolled the area were hit by the shell. Two of the closest soldiers had their legs blown off, blood gushing out, and they were still conscious, screaming in pain. The others, who were less severely injured, were also hit by shrapnel and were howling in pain.
It was indeed the guerrillas! The Afghan guerrillas were attacking the airbase with a mortar! Immediately, the airbase sounded the alarm.
Countless Soviet soldiers, guns in hand, rushed out of the barracks, climbed into vehicles, and headed towards the direction of the mortar fire.
Even the two T-62 tanks, which were used as fixed bunkers, were now roaring to life.
"Hey, hurry up!" The guard, who had just connected the call but hadn't spoken, saw the mortar fire and immediately put down the phone, shouting at Muhammad's armored vehicle.
They were the closest to the mortar fire and could easily catch up with the guerrillas.
"Buzz, buzz." Muhammad tried to start the engine, but for some reason, it wouldn't start.
The guards had already jumped onto Muhammad's armored vehicle. After waiting for a long time, the engine still didn't roar to life, and they finally lost patience, jumping off the vehicle and chasing on foot.
This mortar shell seemed to have stirred up a hornet's nest, and almost all the guards rushed over.
At this moment, although the guerrillas were beginning to emerge like mushrooms after the rain, they were still not a significant force. The Soviets occupied all the cities and were continuously launching sweeps into the mountains, trying to completely subdue Afghanistan.
Only the Soviets went into the mountains to suppress the guerrillas; there had been no precedent for the guerrillas to launch an active attack. So, when the shell flew in, all the Soviets were enraged.
When these Soviets rushed out, Muhammad's armored vehicle finally roared to life. He pushed the control lever hard, almost drooling at the thought of all the Hinds that would be his breakfast!
