Luo Zhan only saw Tang Ran press the security code once but he remembered it clearly. After entering the building unhindered, Luo Zhan went into the elevator room on the first floor.
There was an old woman at least in her eighties who had turned the corner into the elevator room. Her hair was white, her back was trembling as she walked, and she was holding a walking cane.
Luo Zhan walked past the old woman and pressed the elevator button.
One of the elevators stopped at the first floor. The door opened immediately, and Luo Zhan entered the elevator with his eyes drooping lazily.
Everyone who knew Luo Zhan knew that Young Master Luo was always lazy and indifferent, so it was impossible for him to help others for no reason.
This time was no different.
The old woman didn’t seem in trouble for one and secondly, didn’t ask for help. He was a stranger passing by, who didn’t even sweep his eyes to the old woman from the beginning to the end.
As the doors began to close, the sound of the old woman’s cane tapping on the ground spread into the elevator compartment.
“……” Luo Zhan’s eyes lifted.
The sound of the cane outside the elevator door synchronized with the tentative tapping of the blind cane that unexpectedly emerged in his mind.
“Slam—”1
The door that was about to close was suddenly stopped by a slender, strong hand.
The double doors gradually retracted following the interruption.
The old lady had unhurriedly arrived at the elevator. When she heard the sound, she looked up at Luo Zhan with a little surprise.
Luo Zhan still had the same indifferent look and didn’t react to the old lady’s grateful look. He held the door with one hand and turned to the side, giving the old lady more room to enter.
The old lady smiled, “Thank you, young man.”
“You’re welcome.” Luo Zhan responded casually.
Waiting until the elderly woman walked into the elevator, Luo Zhan retracted his hand. There were buttons on both sides of the elevator, so Luo Zhan didn’t need to ask the old woman for her floor. He just stared at the buttons, expressionlessly putting cold air in his eyes.
—He obviously had been disdained by the little girl, not even seeing a glass of water before getting thrown out. He honestly didn’t understand how he heard Luo Xiu’s words and couldn’t help but come back.
Luo Zhan frowned.
At this moment, his phone vibrated in his pocket. Luo Zhan took out his phone and scanned it. The caller ID showed the name of “Tan Yunchang”. He answered the phone.
Tan Yunchang asked in surprise on the other side, “How did your brother get my number?”
“My brother?” Luo Zhan frowned.
Tan Yunchang: “Yeah. He just called me out of the blue, identified himself as Luo Xiu, and then told me that you might not be able to go back to the lab today.”
Luo Zhan was silent.
Tan Yunchang didn’t notice and was still talking, “But he hung up without telling me why…. Did you give him my cell phone number as an emergency contact or something? Ahahahaha that would be such an honor-”
“You think too highly of yourself.” Luo Zhan coldly interrupted, “If he wanted to, then he could get everyone’s cell phone number at INT.”
Tan Yunchang sighed, “Okay. I should have known that you, a person with no heart, no lungs and no liver2, wouldn’t do something like that.”
Luo Zhan lightly narrowed his eyes, “I haven’t settled the account with you for the AI voice assistant, and now you are actively provoking me?”
“Uh, what,” Tan Yunchang laughed across the phone and hurriedly changed the subject, “So you’re really not going back to the lab today? Didn’t our team agree to try again and figure out which part of this bionic robot was malfunctioning today?”
Luo Zhan was silent for two seconds, “Tang Ran had a situation.”
Before he finished, the other side answered, “Ah, I see. You have to accompany her at noon today, right? Is she keeping you for lunch?”
“…………”
Once again remembering the tragedy of being dismissed before even drinking a glass of water, Luo Zhan’s face was wooden and his tone was cold as he spoke, “What lunch? I’m just going up to take a look, and I’ll leave after delivering the keys.”
“Huh?”
“I’ll tell you when I’m back.”
“Hey-“
Not bothering to listen as Tan Yunchang’s continued to probe, Luo Zhan hung up the phone with a lazy frown and put the phone back into his pants pocket.
Then he remembered something and looked up at the small LED display above the elevator door.
It was still on the “1st” floor.
Luo Zhan turned around in confusion and met the old lady’s smiling eyes: “I saw that you hadn’t pressed the elevator yet and was on the phone, so I was afraid you would miss your floor. What floor are you going to, young man?”
Luo Zhan’s expression eased, “12th floor.”
“Hmm? You’re on the 12th floor?” The old lady pressed 11 then pressed 12, “I live downstairs, but why don’t I don’t remember seeing you?”
Luo Zhan: “My…. friend lives over there.”
“Ah,” The old lady smiled in understanding, “Is it a girlfriend ah?”
“……”
To this random elderly woman he met by chance, Luo Zhan didn’t bother to explain, letting the other party think what she wanted.
After the elevator stopped at the 11th floor, it once again brought Luo Zhan to the 12th floor.
The elevator door opened.
Opposite the elevator room would be the middle unit of each floor.
Before walking out of the 12th floor’s elevator room, Luo Zhan’s side profile was still icy cold. His dark eyes were full of strong indifference.
But when he saw the girl crouching in the corner with arms around her knees outside the middle unit’s door, his figure suddenly stilled.
Probably because she heard his movement, the girl, whose face was resting on her slender white arm, tilted her face up blankly.
The corners of her eyes were slightly red. He didn’t know if she had been crying, or was just aggrieved and terribly helpless.
She slowly got up with her white cane and asked softly and timidly, “Hello, I’m the resident of the middle unit. I don’t have anyone to answer the door, can I borrow your cell phone?”
“……”
The pent-up annoyance and depression in Luo Zhan’s heart suddenly disappeared and he was only thankful…
Thankful he came back and didn’t leave the little girl alone in this empty and cold darkness.
Luo Zhan sighed and walked over.
There was an inconspicuous bump at the corner of the carpet in front of the door, right next to her feet.
Normal people could still find it when they looked closely, but for Tang Ran, who couldn’t see anything, only when she stepped on it by accident would she have noticed it.
Luo Zhan stopped in front of Tang Ran.
The girl stood up flustered because he was silently approaching, holding her blind cane and taking a half step back uneasily. But behind her was only the wall and the door, and there wasn’t much space for her to go.
Luo Zhan squatted down, lifted the corner of the carpet, and sure enough, saw the key to her apartment underneath.
And at this moment, in the quiet corridor, an uncertain and cautious voice rang out above his head: “Luo…. Luo Zhan?”
Luo Zhan steadied his body.
In that half-crouched position, he lifted his eyes to look up at the girl standing in front of him.
After staring for two seconds, he voiced out, “Mhm.”

I read DC months ago and I forgot LZ was so unlikeable. Like…. he wasn’t even gonna help the old granny if she didn’t remind him of Tang Ran.
1 I honestly don’t know what the sound effect is for when you stop an elevator.
2 Play on an idiom meaning heartless.
