The sky in June, like a child's face, can change in an instant. Just a moment ago, it was sunny, but now it suddenly started raining, and it was pouring heavily.
"What the heck, I rarely go out to buy something, and it has to rain." Fang Yuan, wearing a black T-shirt and khaki pants, stood at the entrance of the mall to avoid the rain.
This place is located on the second ring road of Rongcheng, a five-story mall. The basement is a supermarket, and the remaining five floors are all for clothing and accessories. Fang Yuan came here today to visit the supermarket and restock.
In front of the mall is the second ring road. Due to the rain, the trees along the road were washed clean, and even the smelly trash bins revealed black and white panda patterns.
Fang Yuan watched the rain getting heavier, feeling annoyed and impatient. He crossed his arms, with a bag of food from the supermarket at his feet, and his eyes scanned the busy street.
It's no wonder Fang Yuan was in a bad mood. He was 23 years old, had just graduated from university, but had not found a job yet.
His father worked at the livestock bureau and suggested he take the civil service exam, but Fang Yuan lacked the patience and did not want to be an official, and his major did not match the requirements.
"Taking a civil service exam with a major in traditional Chinese medicine cultivation, what was Dad thinking?" Fang Yuan muttered, looking exasperated.
The rain on the street made pedestrians fewer, but the number of cars did not decrease.
"Wang wang," suddenly Fang Yuan heard a dog bark.
"A stray dog?" Fang Yuan looked at a drenched dog circling around a trash bin.
The dog's fur was completely wet and stuck to its small body, and it seemed to be trying to rummage through the trash bin.
However, the trash bin was vertical, and the dog, even standing on its hind legs, could only reach Fang Yuan's calf, making it impossible to reach the top.
The dog's front paws were on the trash bin, and it let out a dissatisfied bark.
"Wang wang." The dog did not give up, circling the trash bin and trying every position, but it could not get inside.
"Tsk, stupid dog." Fang Yuan looked at the sky, and the rain had lessened, almost stopping.
Summer rain is like that; it starts and stops suddenly.
"Tap tap tap" Fang Yuan, wearing white sneakers, stepped on the puddles on the street, preparing to cross the road and go back.
"Wang wang."
At this moment, the dog circling the trash bin barked again.
Fang Yuan turned his head and saw the dog, which was hard to identify by breed, still circling the trash bin. Because it was standing up, it was clear that its belly was flat, indicating it was very hungry.
Looking at the red light ahead, Fang Yuan held the bag and took out a sausage, approaching the trash bin.
"You must be silly. The trash bin is twice your height, and you still want to dig through it. It's just a waste of time. If you circle around me, I'll give you the sausage." Fang Yuan said to the white dog.
As soon as Fang Yuan approached, the white dog stopped barking, put down its front paws, and looked up at him.
"Whitey, bark once." Fang Yuan almost immediately named the dog, regardless of its actual color, but its belly was indeed white.
"Wang." The white dog barked immediately after Fang Yuan spoke.
"Wow, not bad. Come, come, circle around me, and the sausage is yours." Fang Yuan became interested.
Fang Yuan squatted down, opened the sausage, and held it under the dog's nose, looking at it expectantly.
The dog tilted its head, looked at Fang Yuan, and sniffed the large sausage. Its shiny black nose twitched, and it really started circling around Fang Yuan.
"Amazing." Fang Yuan was genuinely surprised as the dog completed a circle and returned to him.
"Wang wang wang." The dog barked at the sausage in Fang Yuan's hand, as if reminding him to give it the sausage.
"I know, I'm a man of my word. If I said it's yours, it's yours." Fang Yuan tore off the sausage's wrapper, placed it on the ground, and then put the sausage down.
"Eat it." Fang Yuan stood up after doing this, gesturing for the dog to eat.
The dog was polite and barked twice at Fang Yuan before burying its head to eat.
The sausage Fang Yuan gave was quite large, about as thick as a banana. The dog could not swallow a piece in one bite, so the sausage soon had many tooth marks.
Seeing this, Fang Yuan squatted down again, opened a box of sugar-free yogurt, and placed it next to the dog before standing up and leaving with the bag.
As soon as Fang Yuan left, the dog looked up, tilted its head, and watched him leave before continuing to eat.
Fang Yuan, of course, was unaware of this. He walked slowly into his neighborhood, climbed the stairs to the third floor.
Fang Yuan's neighborhood was a semi-new one, which his parents had moved to from their old house. The reason for the move was simple: the old house was demolished, and they received a new house and some money, which they used to buy the current place where the family of three lived.
The new house was reserved for Fang Yuan's future marriage, but he, who had never had a girlfriend and had no plans to find one, lived with his parents in the large two-bedroom apartment.
Because Fang Yuan had just graduated and was still resting, his schedule was completely reversed. Therefore, when he opened the door, he only saw an empty living room.
"At least Dad and Mom have to go to work." Fang Yuan directly took the food to his room and lay down on the bed, placing the snacks on the floor.
Fang Yuan's parents, though strict, were quite open-minded in some aspects. For example, they never entered his room when he was not there and would knock before entering, a habit that started when he was in the first grade and continued to this day.
As his parents would say, this was a sign of respect for their son.
Regarding his schedule, though his parents were not satisfied with his reversed schedule, they did not interfere, only mentioning it when they saw him. They could be considered very respectful parents.
Therefore, Fang Yuan, who went to bed at three in the morning and woke up early to watch anime, fell asleep under the quiet and dark curtains.
"It's only 4:30, taking a nap is not too much, right?" Thinking this hazily, Fang Yuan quickly fell into a deep sleep.
In a daze, after an unknown amount of time, Fang Yuan suddenly woke up.
"Hello, Mr. Fang." A light and ethereal voice sounded in Fang Yuan's ear.
"???" Fang Yuan, puzzled, put down his hand that was rubbing his eyes and looked up.
In front of him, about a meter away, was a light ball roughly the size of an egg, floating in the air.
"A flying egg?" Fang Yuan said.
"Mr. Fang, you can call me a spirit." The light ball introduced itself formally, with a polite tone.
"What is a spirit? Are you some kind of supernatural being?" Fang Yuan asked curiously, looking directly at the light ball.
"Mr. Fang, you can also call me a world spirit, a realm spirit, or a world consciousness. You can understand it that way." The light ball said patiently and politely.
"So, are you the self-awareness of Earth?" Fang Yuan asked bluntly, subtly pinching his thigh to confirm the sharp pain, realizing that what he was seeing was real.
"The spirit I am is not from the main world, which is Earth, but from a shattered demon realm." The light ball slightly swayed, as if shaking its head, before speaking.
Though Fang Yuan could not see if the egg-like light ball had a mouth, it could speak, so he assumed it had a mouth, as he himself was speaking.
"Alright, I have a general idea of what you are. So, why did you suddenly appear in front of me?" Fang Yuan asked curiously.
"The spirit I am originally came from an ancient and powerful demon realm, but with the passage of time and the changing of the world... " The light ball used a long string of adjectives to describe its origin, and the whole process lasted about five minutes.
"So, you mean the demon realm is shattered, and the last piece of land is about to vanish into nothingness, and you want me to help save the remaining demons?" After listening to the five-minute story, Fang Yuan summarized.
"Yes." This time, the light ball, or the spirit, nodded vigorously and confirmed.
"Me, saving the world? Do I have some unknown ability?" Fang Yuan pointed at himself, looking bewildered.
Yes, Fang Yuan considered himself a very ordinary person, from an ordinary family, with an ordinary background, and an ordinary education leading to unemployment. Therefore, he never imagined that a spirit would come to him and ask him to save the world; it was simply unbelievable.
