"Boom! Boom! Boom!" Artillery shells exploded among the native crowd, the intense explosions sending blood and flesh flying, with limbs and arms occasionally soaring into the air. The natives, experiencing such a strike for the first time, immediately panicked, running around the beach like headless flies. The pirates on the 'Flying Fish' warship fired their cannons as quickly as possible, their anger at the natives' slaughter of their own kind driving them to want to unload all their shells onto the natives' heads!
The sight terrified the chief of the Buena tribe, Enado. He had thought the attack on Wu Family Village would go smoothly, but the sudden appearance of the fleet on the sea dealt him a heavy blow! His Buena tribe, one of the largest in the northeastern part of Mindanao with over eight thousand people, had brought two thousand to attack Wu Family Village, almost depleting the tribe's elite forces. But now, with heavy losses and no victory in sight, he was filled with sorrow and anger!
The Chinese in Wu Family Village, on the other hand, felt as if they had been rescued from hell and returned to heaven. They had been prepared for the worst, with the men ready to fight to the death and the women and children planning to drown themselves to avoid capture by the natives. But the sudden appearance of the fleet and the fierce attack on the natives instantly saved them from their dire situation.
"Father! We're saved! Wu Family Village is saved!" Wu Daniu shouted excitedly. Despite his best efforts in fighting the natives, he was at a disadvantage, and Wu Family Village had almost no chance of winning. If they failed, the entire village would be massacred.
The old village chief also smiled, but the worry in his eyes did not diminish much. After this battle, Wu Family Village would be severely weakened. If the natives attacked again, they would have no chance of defending themselves! Additionally, he was puzzled by the sudden appearance of the fleet. The nearby waters were not a trade route, and such a large fleet rarely appeared. Although the fleet was attacking the natives, it was hard to tell if they were friend or foe!
The 'Flying Fish' warship continued to fire on the natives, while the other pirate ships rapidly approached the dock.
Soon, pirates armed with muskets disembarked. Their black hair and yellow skin made the Chinese in Wu Family Village feel a deep sense of kinship! In their most difficult moment, their compatriots had appeared, nothing could be more exhilarating!
"Father! They are also Chinese, our compatriots!" Wu Daniu exclaimed in surprise. He was very surprised, as far as he knew, no Chinese force in northern Mindanao had such formidable combat power.
The old village chief's heart, which had been in suspense, finally relaxed. If they were compatriots, things couldn't be too bad.
Chief Enado of the Buena tribe was in a dilemma. His men had suffered significant losses under the enemy's artillery fire, but he was reluctant to give up! Victory was within reach, but the cooked duck seemed to be flying away again! He had planned this operation for a long time.
When the pirates disembarked, Enado was filled with resentment. When did the Chinese become so powerful! However, only about two hundred Chinese came ashore, which relieved him. At least, the number of Chinese was not overwhelming, giving him a glimmer of hope!
"Chief, what should we do? The Chinese artillery is too fierce, we can't hold on much longer!" A dark-skinned, muscular native warrior reported to Enado. He was the bravest warrior in the tribe, but his eyes were filled with fear. Seeing his fellow natives being blown to pieces, his courage had been completely drained!
"Naje, how can you be afraid? You are the strongest warrior in the tribe, how can you be timid? There are only two hundred Chinese, and they only have a dozen cannons, which pose no significant threat to us! Lead your men, charge forward, and kill all the Chinese! Kill all the Chinese, and the white-skinned Chinese women will be ours!" Enado roared. Although the Chinese were of the yellow race, they were much lighter-skinned compared to the dark-skinned natives. Chinese women naturally became the object of the natives' desire!
Naje, the native warrior, hesitated. The sudden and fierce artillery attack from the sea terrified him, but the desire for Wu Family Village's wealth and beautiful Chinese women made him unwilling to give up!
After a few seconds of hesitation, Naje made up his mind. Greed ultimately overcame fear. For the natives, risking their lives for wealth and beautiful women was not a big deal!
"Kill! Follow me, kill all the Chinese!" Naje shouted, wielding a steel sword and charging towards the dock. The other natives, inspired by his lead, also regained their confidence and launched an attack. Their eyes gleamed with greed, like those of wild wolves.
On the dock, the pirates who had disembarked from the pirate ships had already formed ranks. A month of training had made them proficient with the muskets. Although the Brown Bess muskets were cumbersome, they could fire three rounds per minute. However, their marksmanship was not very good.
Wu Family Village's dock was not large, usually only used to dock a few fishing boats! On the dock, over two hundred pirates formed three rows, already loaded with gunpowder and lead balls. Facing the native attack, the pirates were slightly nervous. However, these pirates were hardened by the elements and did not tremble or wet their pants like inexperienced soldiers!
The Chinese in Wu Family Village watched tensely. Although only about two hundred Chinese had disembarked with muskets, and the warships were still firing, the number of natives was overwhelming. They were worried that these compatriots might not be a match for the natives. If that happened, they would still face certain death!
As the commander of the military affairs of Flying Fish Island, Niu Meng also arrived at the dock. This was the first battle for the pirates of Flying Fish Island after being fully equipped with muskets, and he took it very seriously. Moreover, this was their first battle on Mindanao, and their performance would determine whether they could establish a foothold on the island!
"Brats, get your spirits up! Those dark-skinned natives are so skinny, like monkeys. Although they are many, they are nothing to fear! You have muskets, not just sticks!" Niu Meng shouted loudly. Although many pirates on Flying Fish Island preferred to use swords, enjoying the feeling of cutting through flesh and blood, under Long Yufei's strict orders, all pirates had to use muskets. However, they still carried steel swords on their waists.
The natives charged towards the dock like wild beasts, and the pirates were ready for battle!
"Fire!" When the natives were about a hundred meters from the dock, Niu Meng gave the order to fire!
"Bang! Bang! Bang!" The first row of over eighty pirates fired! In the dense gunfire, dozens of natives at the front fell to the ground. Many were not killed instantly but were injured, emitting animal-like cries of pain.
The sudden loss of dozens of men shocked the charging natives. But under the orders of their leaders, they launched another attack!
The first row of pirates who had fired retreated to the back to reload quickly, while the second row moved forward. The same process: raise the gun, aim, shoot, then retreat to reload.
After the second row fired, the third row moved up. By the time the third row fired, the first row had reloaded.
In this way, the pirates formed three rows, taking turns to fire, creating a continuous barrage of gunfire!
Although the natives were only about a hundred meters from the pirates, this distance seemed insurmountable. The natives could not cross it, and their bodies piled up thickly on the beach under the pirates' fierce attack.
Wu Family Village's dock was small, only able to accommodate a hundred men at most. The numerical advantage of the natives was completely nullified. The pirates could use their firepower to slaughter the natives at will!
"Bang! Bang! Bang!" In the rapid gunfire, the natives paid a heavy price!
The Chinese in Wu Family Village were already stunned. Although the number of compatriots who had disembarked was small, they easily dealt with the fierce natives, like slaughtering chickens.
"Are muskets that powerful? If we had muskets, we wouldn't have lost so many people!" Wu Daniu said, wide-eyed and muttering.
Chief Enado of the Buena tribe was also completely stunned. Initially, seeing only about two hundred pirates disembark, he thought there might still be a chance. But now, it was clear there was no possibility of victory! Watching his people being killed one by one, Enado felt regret. In Mindanao, the number of people in a tribe was crucial, a basic guarantee of power and territory.
"Retreat! Retreat!" Seeing the losses increase, Enado had no choice but to accept defeat!
