Chapter 30: The Summoning of Magic Beasts

Luo, Wayne, Carol, Conelia, Irina, and Bingzhi all held the weapons and equipment from the academy and followed Teacher Chen Sufen out of the academy's teleportation town to the outskirts of Dibulaisi's western city.

As they passed through several small villages, Conelia suddenly said, "Teacher, can we make it if we keep walking like this?"

Sufen replied, "It's fine. If we can't wait, we can run."

"Alright, let's see who gets there first." Wayne was full of energy at the mention of a race, and he looked at Luo as if challenging him.

Luo was not to be outdone: "Who's afraid of who! Let's start the race." He shouted and dashed forward on the small road.

Wayne, who had been outpaced, said angrily, "Hey, you're cheating. Sufen should have said 'start.'"

"Ha ha..." The others also followed.

Dibulaisi is located on the Wotu Plateau, where the western hills and forests are quite lush. Some areas are home to many relatively tame magic beasts, which do not pose much of a threat to nearby residents, so the empire has not sent troops to clear the mountains.

To the west is a place called the Illusion Beast Garden, a favorite haunt of the surrounding magic beasts. They were heading there.

The narrow dirt path, less than two meters wide, was lined with green weeds. On both sides, vast fields of wheat, not yet ripe, stretched out. Occasionally, two tall windmills stood on small hills or in the fields, their huge blades turning slowly. It was hard to imagine such a charming rural scene outside the empire's largest city.

From time to time, a Thunderhorn Rhino would block the path, but Luo and Wayne's race was not affected by such minor obstacles. They both jumped over the tame yet strong magic beasts. Even if someone like Conelia stepped on one, it wouldn't get angry. This Thunderhorn Rhino was two sizes smaller than Luo's, suggesting that Teacher Sufen had helped him catch a rhino leader.

In the fields, there were often Mud Squirrels, about half a meter tall, throwing clumps of dirt at them to protest the noise, which disturbed their enjoyment of their meals. Of course, there were many other common magic beasts roaming the fields and farmlands. These friendly and common creatures were naturally loved by people, although they occasionally caused some trouble, it was not enough to affect the lives of the surrounding humans.

These magic beasts were common in the area around Dibulaisi. Thunderhorn Rhinos didn't fetch much in the local magic beast market, but they could be quite valuable if taken elsewhere.

The Illusion Beast Garden was a small basin surrounded by many small hills, no more than a dozen miles wide. It was one of many places where magic beasts gathered. Because it was close and not home to particularly fierce magic beasts, many people liked to come here to paint or occasionally hunt. Why "occasionally"? Because there weren't many powerful magic beasts here, and people preferred to have strong magic beasts as companions. Of course, there were exceptions, such as the pancake shop owner who preferred a Mud Squirrel as a helper. After training, they could help serve dishes, although they occasionally liked to steal food. Many children's playgrounds or rural inns had such "waiters."

"We're here." The group stood on a small hill and looked down. Amidst the mountains, a vast grassland appeared. Although it was not a flat plain as one might imagine, it was still quite open and bright.

"Look, it's a Rainbow Demon Butterfly, so beautiful. I saw a girl at the academy with one," Conelia said happily, pointing to a large butterfly flying not far ahead.

Irina called out, "Oh, there's a Limb-Tailed Beast trying to eat it. Let's help!" She drew an arrow, infused it with magic, and shot it at the Limb-Tailed Beast. Although it hit, the damage was negligible for the lazy and fat beast, and it continued to hunt without any interest.

The Limb-Tailed Beast, with a tail that made up two-thirds of its body, was a large and thick creature. It was a common subject of study for mages, as many of its body parts were excellent materials.

"Wow!" A giant toe vulture with a wingspan of five meters flew by, causing Wayne to cheer.

Sufen asked him, "Have you decided what kind of magic beast you want to summon?"

"I want that one, the bird that just flew by," Wayne said excitedly.

Irina scolded, "That's a Giant Toe Vulture, you idiot."

Wayne retorted, "So what? It's still a bird."

Sufen said, "Wayne, you have good taste. A fierce and aggressive magic beast like that suits you, especially since it can fly."

"Right," Wayne nodded. "That's what I thought. I can command this bird... this Giant Toe Vulture to pull Luo off his rhino, and then I'll finish him off with a sword. That would be great!"

Luo gritted his teeth and cursed, "Bastard, so that's your plan. I'll have a hard time dealing with an aerial attack."

Suddenly, Bingzhi, who had been silent, said, "That Giant Toe Vulture is too small."

"Too small?" Carol seemed unfamiliar with this magic beast. "I think it's already quite large. Two strong men could probably lift it."

Sufen said, "Bingzhi is right. An adult Giant Toe Vulture should have a wingspan of over seven meters, and a strong one can reach over ten meters."

Wayne said, "So this one is clearly not an adult?"

Luo finally couldn't hold back, "Teacher Sufen, please don't let him catch such a good one. He's going to use it against me."

Irina chimed in, "Exactly, why help such a fool catch such a strong magic beast? It would be a waste."

Wayne was angry, "Irina, you're not even married, and you're already helping your future husband! Who are you really on the side of?"

Irina, whose thoughts were exposed, was embarrassed and furious. She couldn't say anything and just walked away.

The others chuckled, making Luo even more awkward.

Sufen said, "Alright, besides Wayne, does anyone else need a summoning beast?"

"I do."

"Me too." Carol and Irina both raised their hands. Carol added, "I just don't know if I can find the type of magic beast I want here."

Sufen asked, "You're a mage, right?"

Carol replied, "Yes, I specialize in water magic. I can start my secondary specialization when I reach the初级 mage level, so I haven't decided yet."

"Water magic..." Sufen thought for a moment and said, "There aren't many suitable magic beasts here for you. It might be hard to find your ideal guardian. What about Irina?"

Irina, who had stood far away when she raised her hand, walked over to answer, "I'm a knight, specializing in light magic."

"Knight?" Wayne interjected, "Didn't you say you were a mage?" He glanced at Luo, "You didn't..."

"Shut up!" Irina, blushing, shouted, "I've always been a knight. I signed up before I met Luo. You just didn't know. Ask Conelia if you don't believe me!"

Conelia nodded.

Wayne, stung by her words, muttered, "I didn't say anything."

Carol looked at Bingzhi and Conelia, "Bingzhi and Conelia, do you need one? Or do you already have your own summoning guardian?"

Bingzhi didn't speak, seemingly reluctant to discuss the matter.

Conelia shook her head, "My father has already prepared a magic beast for me. It will be brought over in a few days."

"Ah," Carol nodded, knowing that Conelia's family was a local noble, and the magic beast they chose would be very good.

Wayne asked, confused, "Conelia, aren't you specializing in spatial summoning? Can't you have many magic beasts as your summoning guardians?"

Irina was ashamed of his ignorance but didn't want to provoke him further.

Sufen, the teacher, answered the eager student's question, "Spatial summoning is different from the guardian summoning that forms naturally within the human body. Spatial magic creates a pseudo-space that mimics the special space within the human body. While it can also house magic beasts, it cannot achieve the mental connection that humans have with their guardians. The summoner must command the beasts directly. Conelia, with her current abilities, cannot yet create such a pseudo-space, which is an intermediate-level magic. Moreover, it is not possible to sign a contract with all magic beasts for unlimited summoning. The creation of this pseudo-space relies on the summoner's increasing strength, and the difficulty of summoning more beasts increases over time."

Wayne understood another point and carefully memorized what the teacher had said, "Teacher Sufen, why do I find what you say easier to remember than what other teachers say?"

The group was speechless, and some even looked at him with disdain. Sufen just covered her mouth and laughed.
