"Hey?"
Levi, who was casually flipping through a popular magazine, suddenly noticed an advertisement inside.
"Concert? On School Island?"
Concerts on School Island were not uncommon; various performances, either student-initiated or school-organized, took place every few days. However, a concert by a pop idol was, in Levi's memory, only the second time.
He still remembered the last one, which was last year, when a strange little girl with green hair tied into two long braids caused a huge sensation. It was almost a riot, and the unexpected incidents that increased his workload were not something he could forget.
"Right."
After Levi shifted the topic to idols, Yuki never returned her gaze to the messy fortune-telling book. She rarely answered without being asked, but this time she responded proactively to Levi's words.
And... a bit of longing? Levi could be sure that Yuki's tone and pace of speech did not change, but he did feel a slight difference. Although it was a very subtle distinction, it was probably the difference between her work and non-work states.
Levi, on his own initiative, categorized the alien girl's daily routine as part of her work. He didn't know that the reality was exactly as he thought.
"Do you want to go?"
Levi found the most suitable way to express his gratitude. Whether there were other hidden intentions, only he knew. For example, taking the emotionless girl out to play was very interesting, but Levi would never admit it.
"Sure."
A definite answer.
"Alright, the ticket pre-sale starts today. I'll buy them tonight."
Without even asking if she was willing to go with him, Levi took it upon himself to buy the tickets. He didn't realize that subconsciously, he already had the notion that the girl named Yuki would not refuse him.
The result confirmed Levi's attitude. Yuki hesitated slightly at the somewhat rash invitation but nodded in acceptance. Her hesitation was so subtle that Levi couldn't detect it.
Perhaps this alien girl, created artificially, was not as devoid of emotion as Levi guessed. Understanding between people is never absolute, let alone with an unknown life form of unknown origin? But he believed that in the near future, he would get the answer to whether Yuki had emotions.
===================
Another peaceful and ordinary night, which used to be every day, but recently Levi suddenly realized how luxurious such enjoyment was.
The daily program he watched every day had ended, and an unknown team's baseball game was now playing on TV. Yewen, who came from Europe, had never been interested in baseball. Her small body was curled up on the sofa, forcibly using Levi's thigh as a pillow. Her closed eyelids and steady breathing suggested she was hypnotized by the warm indoor air.
With his head fixed by the golden-haired girl, Levi, unable to move, stared intently at the TV screen. Like Yewen, he had never paid attention to baseball. Just by looking at his eyes, one could tell that his focus was not on the TV, as his pupils were not focused.
What was he thinking about? None of the other residents of the small house could guess that he was thinking about something he had discovered by chance when he returned home today.
When he returned home and walked up the stairs to change clothes in his room, he happened to pass by the room that originally belonged to him but now belonged to Eve.
The door to the room was open, and the owner was not inside. Without any prurient intentions, Levi just glanced inside unconsciously.
But that one glance revealed something significant.
On the table in the room, there was a product wrapped in soft plastic. Its shape and color were both familiar and unfamiliar to him. It wasn't until he saw the brand name that he realized what it was.
Sanitary pads, officially called sanitary napkins. It is said that they were first developed by American nurses serving in France during World War I. This invention, one of the "Top Ten Inventions of the 20th Century," is familiar to everyone.
But Levi was not familiar with it. It wasn't his fault for being ignorant; he could only blame the two non-human beings he lived with.
Yewen was a vampire. It was already good enough that she didn't drink other people's blood; how could she possibly expel precious blood every month? Besides, if vampires still maintained human physiological phenomena, the small house wouldn't be able to accommodate so many guests.
Even the best contraception couldn't prevent accidents. Although Levi and Yewen were not officially registered or married, they were essentially a married couple. The fact that they had no offspring for so long could only be attributed to the special physiology of vampires.
However, there seemed to be vampires who could have children like ordinary people. After all, "vampire" was a general term, and different races had their differences. But this was not something Levi needed to consider; understanding Yewen's physiology was enough for him.
Returning to the main topic, Levi understood Yewen's physiology, but he knew far less about Eve. What was the difference between a cyborg and a robot? This was the question running through his mind.
A purely artificial life form like Tachibana didn't need to have such a troublesome physiological simulation function added during its creation. What about Eve? When Levi first met Eve, she was already in her modified state, but before that, she was probably an ordinary human woman.
Whether she was a human from Earth or a similar life form, a biological weapon specifically modified for combat had not eliminated the physiological phenomena that could interfere with combat. This was something Levi found hard to understand.
Could it be that the researchers who initially modified Eve were not trying to turn her into a biological weapon? Levi felt he knew something, perhaps information he had heard from other sources, etched in his mind but unclear.
Forget it, he thought. He had long known that his memory was unreliable. Levi decided not to dwell on this somewhat disrespectful question about Eve.
Eve, who had escaped from Levi's thoughts, was now carrying a few books and walking up the stairs to return to her room. The discomfort of her menstrual period was much less severe for her than for ordinary humans, but it still affected her mood to some extent.
The golden-haired assassin, walking upstairs, glanced back at Levi, who was sitting in front of the TV with Yewen. If her eyes could see through human appearances and see Levi's thoughts, she might have attacked her master out of frustration, given her already bad mood. After all, she was a 16-year-old girl, and Eve knew how to blush.
By the time Levi came to his senses, Eve had already returned to her room. The baseball game on TV had ended, and it was now the commercial break. A popular teenage idol was dancing to music, and words about a concert were rolling across the bottom of the screen.
