Within the palace on the very peak of Qing Lun mountain, a man extended his hand to touch the small balls of light circling around his body. The rays of light suddenly enveloped his entire body, and when it disappeared and the eyes were open, the eyes bore more of a slightly unclear[1] expression.

When he waved his hand again, an additional mirror of water appeared in front of him. Inside it, a youth’s face was reflected, with a folding fan covering half the face, and their eyes carrying a frivolous smile that did not make others take aversion to.

In a trance, it was although one saw Mo Jing Yu of a younger time.

In the open market of the city’s east side.

The youth waved the folding fan inscribed by some famous master that he stole from the study. The fan covered his face, only leaving the arbitrary glancing eyes’ frivolous hint of a smile, with the single tear-shaped birthmark in the corner of the eye particularly evocative. If he were to see some family’s young lady sneakily looking at himself, the young man would use his elbow to poke the person behind him, “Take note- when we get back, we’ll speak with father to have the person brought into the room.”

The servant behind would make a wailing face, but thankfully, their own young master was only saying the nonsense with his mouth. If he were to really do this, the master could skin him.

The Jiang family’s Young Master, Jiang Zi YuHis title, 世子爷, more so describes his relationship as being a (distant) relative of the prince, but not imperial royalty (otherwise he would be addressed as prince). But as this is harder to work in translation, I’m just using young master- however keep in mind the people around him are not actually addressing him as ‘young master’, but rather as a relative of the prince, even though at times, he is addressed as an actual young master (少爷). I will use capitalization to make this distinction.

[3] 弱冠之年- in ancient times, men at the age of 20 will undergo a ‘crowning ceremony’ in which the guests will bestow blessings, similar to a coming of age ceremony, in which they are finally recognized as an adult.

[4] Refer back to the Rabbit/Fox arc in regards to 风花雪月.

[5] Or, harem, on a smaller scale that exists not in the back palace.

[6] 花旦- a female role in Chinese opera. I’m more or less hesitant to translate this as a female actress, as the role is not necessarily played by one of the same gender, as will be made clear later.

[7] 商声- refers to 商音. In more modern terms, the tone (Re) belongs to the pentatonic scale that dominates ancient Chinese music. The term is also referred to as 秋音 (autumn tone) due to how the five tones match to the four seasons. When it becomes the central note, there is a dismal/desolate and sorrowful tone to the overall piece, to which the sentence may be referring to.

[8] 愣头青- one who does things without using his brain. A complete, utter idiot.
