If one were to ask what kind of feelings did Shen Qing Yi have toward Jiang Zi Yu, he was afraid he himself would not be able to answer as well; but towards the person that was beside him, would instead be loathing of a hundred ways possible.
Up until later, [he recalled] the eight hardships Buddha spoke of, of which one was resentment upon meeting. He thought, perhaps he was suffering through one of the hardships.
That Mu Ying Sheng truly made him disgusted, to be seducing Jiang Zi Yu without batting an eye. He had even thought, if he were to have the other person’s face all scratched up, would that person instead favour himself? But in reality, even if he were more outstanding, he would not be able to keep the other person.
Jealousy took hold of all of his thoughts. He did not hesitate to lose his cultivation, go against the Heavens to change fate, have Mu Ying Sheng’s life pass over Jiang Zi Yu, and forcefully cut off the unclear red thread between the two. He purposefully had the person trapped within the fire, sent someone to invite the other person, and have that person take a proper look- between life and a lover, what exactly he should choose.
And the result, instead, gouged at him painfully to the point of not wanting to live.
Even though he could have taken Jiang Zi Yu out with the wave of a hand, let him personally watch Mu Ying Sheng get buried within the sea of fire, and have him completely give up [on him]; but when the other person was not even willing to give him a single look, Shen Qing Yi could not tell what it signified, and also did not know if it was because he bore admiration, or if he held the biggest evil intent.
If these two were to die, it would be great. He would not even let these two people lay in the same grave.
Dream on.
And then, that person was finally willing to turn his head to look at himself. He turned over the body full of pride and knelt in front of him, with a voice filled with grievance, as though he wanted to have his heart gouged out to let him see his sincerity. He was jealous. This time, Shen Qing Yi finally distinctly perceived the original sin of his own jealousy; he told the truth to the other person, and admired the constantly changing expressions on Jiang Zi Yu’s face.
A despair that made people feel asphyxiated and also quiver.
He did not say those words wrong- a long life was far too lengthy, that it would make people tedious [of it], but he wanted to live forever with the other person. For this, he did not hesitate to go against Heaven and change fate. Even if he had to use all that he could, he would have the person remain by his own side, even though he knew the other person would hate himself.
The flame to his back reflected this person’s features to a dazzling degree, and he interrogated him as to why he would be this attached. Shen Qing Yi also repeatedly asked himself this as well. But in reality, he too was unclear as to why he himself would have such an obsessiveness, that he would even not hesitate to seek up to this world, and use up all he could.
Perhaps a jealously born from desire, prompted the growth of this strange liking.
No one taught Shen Qing Yi to love. He, too, had never known of taste of love. He only knew that when he saw Mo Jing Yu or Jiang Zi Yu, his heart would fill to the brim, and would even greatly wish he could have the world’s greatest things presented in front of the other person’s eyes, even if this person would not spare a glance.
He had the person locked at the top of Qing Lun mountain, and did not pay attention to anything else; other than [attending to] the essential things the other person needed every day, he would concentrate on developing the supposed method of bone engraving.
That day, after he finally touched on the principles of Heaven(?) and understood how to engrave the bone, Qing Lun mountain experienced a trial of thunder. Outside, the winds and rain erupted, but inside the house, one could only hear a small sound of rain. When he wanted to have the forbidden technique used upon Jiang Zi Yu, the other person suddenly called out his name.
After a long time, he then softly asked a question, “Is it raining outside?”
Shen Qing Yi did not know why he lightened his footsteps, as though afraid to agitate this moment, that even when he was replying, he was also cautiously considerate, “En.”
The other person covered his eyes, and suddenly laughed.
“How great.”
He was unable to comprehend exactly what kind of meaning the other person’s ‘how great’ held, but even if he did not dwell on it, he could guess that it was probably related to Mu Ying Sheng. After all, this person was never happy because of him, and would not grieve because of him. The only the that would move Jiang Zi Yu, would only be the resentment born from coping with Mu Ying Sheng was all.
How pitiful- to let the other person remember himself, would require him to rely on the help from a person he loathed.
Jiang Zi Yu’s life did not yet end, but his body gradually grew feeble. Even if he used medicinal pills, he could not block that hair of black from gradually whitening. Within the other person’s laughter, his heart gradually sunk down. It was not all that wonderful.
He could produce clouds with one flip of a hand and rain with another[1], and even touch the Heaven’s laws and develop a forbidden technique, but could not make the person he wanted to remain to stay. And also……
The person he loved most.
At this moment, Shen Qing Yi came to a realization. Perhaps, he himself really came to love Jiang Zi Yu. It was because he had unjustifiably desired for the other person’s unreserved love, and following the passage of time, [those feelings] accumulated bit by bit.
The other person relentlessly grabbed and swayed him, but due to the feebleness of the body, he did not feel anything much, but that pair of eyes’ loathing pierced into his eyes.
“Did you not say you like me! Didn’t you say you like me!?”
The weak cry made him have a heartache. Before he reached his hand out, he instead tightened it into a fist, and even did not know how to respond to the other person.
He liked this person, and was fond of them as such.
Alone, Shen Qing Yi thought for a very, very long time. In the end, he had formed a resolution, held the other person’s hand, and softly said, “I’m letting you go.”
“You are free.” You should probably be happy now.
“If it’s like this, Jiang Zi Yu, can you not hate me that much.” Once I think of how you hate me, this heart would feel terribly bad, and be in a lot of pain.
He heard the other person say “it’s too late”, and his heart sunk down. He continuously kissed the other person’s hand, and felt the warm sensation gradually turn icy cold, but he still did not stop his own actions, devout and gentle.
Shen Qing Yi had the person buried in the small courtyard within the palace. He clearly said he would give up the person, but he still did not to have the person settled somewhere else.
If that person were to know, would he be unable to achieve peace and come back to find him?
But Shen Qing Yi knew, it was not possible. In this palace, other that him, there was no other sign of life.
Perhaps once he had broken away, Jiang Zi Yu would have long already went to go find the other person?
In the end, he still had his own selfishness. He cut off the other person’s red thread with that person, and severed their beginning and end. He even engraved a blood seal on Jiang Zi Yu’s body, in hopes that in the other person’s next life, he himself would be able rush in before Heaven’s laws [could take effect], find the other person, and then, relying on the sincerity he presented, get Jiang Zi Yu’s love in exchange.
Only that, in such a big palace, only remained him alone once again.
By now, there were rumours circulating from somewhere that on the peak of Qin Lun was a immortal, named the Bone Engraver; the technique of bone engraving indeed went against the Heavens and changed fates, but the Bone Engraver did not ever believe in fate.
No one knew, what the bone engraver in the legends loved the most was to stand under the tree in the courtyard, raise his head to look at the barren branches, and then lightly sing something. If there was someone carefully listening in, they would then discover it bore some similarities to that once renowned hua dan of the capital a hundred years ago, Mu Ying Sheng- the suspended tone was also as crystal clear.
But what did it matter? That person, no matter what, would only love the hua dan, and did not pay attention to the verdant clothes.
That person’s hua dan, in that lifetime, would only be one person.
On a certain day, the magpie once again flew onto the end of the branch and called out. The person under the tree halted for a second, and suddenly sang again, the clarity of the melody with a lingering charm brought about a strange delight.
A couple hundred years, he finally waited until that person came.
[1] 翻云覆雨- an expression referring to how one can change their attitude constantly (with the flip of their hand), or play tricks. This expression is also used as an indirect reference for a certain bedtime activity, but obviously, Shen Qing Yi ain’t getting any action. In context, this should just be read literally, since his attitude is clearly not reflected by this expression.
