The so called ceremony of recognition, was only just inviting everyone over to take a look, eating a meal, and bearing witness to Wang Yu giving Shen Qing Yi a kowtow and offering him tea. A drop of blood entered his forehead, and a lukewarm feeling emanated from his forehead. The other person then gave a folding fan to him, and thus was his ceremony.
After entering the gates of immortality, one would break away from the secular world, and the mortal family’s name would no longer be used. Shen Qing Yi pondered over it for a while, then fixed his sleeve, “In the future, this child will accomplish big things, and would most definitely become someone praised far and wide. We will call him, Chang Ge[1].”
He did not know anything about it being mortal or not, but this name represented the fetters he’d have with Shen Qing Yi. He gripped the folding fan in his hand, and gave a deep kowtow, “Disciple, Chang Ge, greets Teacher.”
After this, there would no longer be the person known as Wang Yu- only Qing Lun mountain’s disciple, Chang Ge.
Before leaving, Madam Wang even smiled and said that if he were to become outstanding in the future to not forget to favour the Wang family. Chang Ge lightly blinked, saw the other person’s unexpected expression and followed with a smile, “Mother should be at ease. I too hope that Mother would be able to attentively give guidance to Rui ge’er, let the other person be outstanding, and support the Wang family.”
Madam Wang’s expression turned cold in an instant. Just as she was about to say something, the wet nurse behind her pulled at her sleeve. When she took a look at Shen Qing Yi who was watching all of this, she then only spoke of a few advisories.
Fake love and fake affections. Chang Ge could not help but sneer inside.
Wang Rui pulled at his sleeve, with an appearance full of adoration, and quietly told him to contact the family often, and tell him what kinds of fun things there were on Qing Lun mountain. And Lord Wang, with a big smile, lightly flicked the other person’s head, laughed, and called him a brat with a still heavy heart set on just playing, but the intimacy within his tone did not reflect the same.
A wave of brutality rose up in Chang Ge’s heart, but was immediately pacified by the owner of the big hand on his shoulder, he looked towards the other person with his back towards the light, and softly said, “Let’s go.”
Rising up with the sword, he nested in Teacher’s arms. When he heard the gasps of the people below his feet, Chang Ge was secretly delighted.
This person was his. He would also be good to him as well.
After arriving at Qing Lun mountain, Chang Ge discovered that this palace only had the two of them residing in it, and the knowledge of this made him even more happier. That way, one could only say he and his Teacher both were mutually each other’s only one, and could only rely on each other.
Teacher liked him dressed in red clothing while waving the folding fan, and would always say a child at this age should be energetic and bright, unrestrained and wilful. Thus, he learned to wear red coloured clothing he always hated, and used the folding fan Teacher gave him as his life-tied magic weapon[2], and would often go to the human realm at foot of the mountain and experience various flavours[3], then talk about some interesting things for the other person to hear.
The other person would always rub his head, and although there was no expression on his face, his gaze instead would only concentrate on him alone.
Oh, how nicely Teacher would treat him- if he were to just slightly pretend to be scared, he would be on guard by his side during the night, and softly call him Little Fishie, and sing him a song. Although he never understood why even though the other person was clearly the role of a qing yi, he would only sing the hua dan’s part[4]. Chang Ge never asked, but if Shen Qing Yi liked it, regardless if it was wrong, he would never look into why.
At times when he was unhappy, the other person would also carve out little figures, and just like a mortal, use a small carving knife to chisel out his features, as vivid as life. Inside of Chang Ge’s room, there would be many of these kind of little figures put around, as well as Shen Qing Yi’s…… only, he did not ever give out any one, since not one of those toys would be suitable in receiving Teacher’s gaze.
That was his teacher- his one and only teacher.
At the same time, there would be letters consistently coming from the Wang residence, and every time, he would avoid Shen Qing Yi to look at them, then watch as these letters set to fire bit by bit.
Ke, human nature.
During the time he was not there, originally, it was Madam Wang who delivered the letters, but as time passed, the person who sent letters turned into Wang Rui. Although Chang Ge felt that the other person was just putting up a false display of affection, this did not hinder him from putting on a false appearance of a loving brother in front of Teacher.
Qing Lun mountain did not belong to any sect, however, each of the big sects would be on friendly terms with Teacher. At first, there was only Teacher himself, and now that he was here, they would directly use voice transmission with him (Chang Ge) to seek help, and use these times to promote further interaction to get in Shen Qing Yi’s good graces.
On the Qian mountain, there was a secret territory that would soon open up in a few days time. Between the sects, there was already a tacit understanding of wanting the most outstanding disciples to go, and Qing Lun mountain’s [invitation/disciple] was not left out either. After all, Shen Qing Yi was famous for withdrawing from society. Other than that little moment [he stepped out] to take in a disciple, no one ever saw him go out into the world, nor he would go fight [for things] either; the invitation for Chang Ge this time was only just currying favour in front of Shen Qing Yi, since the other person’s very powerful and was of the neutral faction, there would always be times one needed help.
Chang Ge was not willing to go. After entering the secret territory, he would not be able see Shen Qing Yi, and could only wait until the next time the secret territory opened to return. Even though he was clearly already an of-age youth, he was still like a child who liked to hang by Shen Qing Yi’s side, talk on and on with the other person and throw childish tempers around.
This time, Shen Qing Yi did not agree, and only coaxed him to go by himself to the secret territory in a few days like before, “You have already been by my side for about ten years, but have not yet ever head towards the secret territory alone. What would you do if you were to encounter danger later on? You should be at ease. Your Teacher will wait for your safe return at the entrance of the secret territory.
After having received the other person’s pledge over and over again, Chang Ge then very unwillingly agreed to it.
There was also a reason why he did not want to go- Qian mountain was located near the Wang residence. If he were to go this time, he would definitely see a person he did not want to see.
But he was usually reluctant to go against Shen Qing Yi’s wishes, and this time, was also the same.
After a few days, Shen Qing Yi followed him together to head towards Qian mountain. As the secret territory’s entrance did not open yet, everyone filled up the restaurants, and the Wang residence who had long already heard the news invited the teacher and disciple to reside at the residence. When they were at the entrance, Chang Ge and Shen Qing Yi bumped into Wang Rui who just came back. The youth who had not been seen for a long time had also grown tall a long time ago- the other person also wore a suit of red, the face of the youth that looked to be still tender bore a smile, and the fan in his hand closed and was randomly placed back at the waist, “Big brother, how is it that you’ve come back but not even let me know.”
At this moment, when he and Wang Rui stood together, there were quite a few similarities [between them] that if an outsider were to look, they would not be able to differentiate who was who in such a short time. Chang Ge’s hand that held his magical weapon secretly tightened, his eyes turned dark, but the smile on his face did not get reduced, “This time, the secret territory is to open, so Teacher and I have come early to prepare to see its outcome.”
“No wonder I saw so many people at those restaurants.” Wang Rui brightly laughed, and made a slight display of courtesy towards Shen Qing Yi, “It has been a long time, our family’s big brother had been under Mr. Immortal’s care.”
“En.”
Shen Qing Yi only indifferently replied, but Chang Ge sensitively perceived that after the other person’s gaze fell upon the youth, it stopped for a moment. This person would usually have no one in his eyes, and did not give the secular world a single glance, so at what time would he have his own gaze stop at another person’s being even for a little bit?
At this moment, Chang Ge felt as though some precious thing of his was getting quietly taken away by someone. He looked at Wang Rui’s unsuspecting smile, and the smile on the corners of his mouth weakened a lot more. He only followed behind neither fast nor slow, with his slightly dark eyes looking to be scheming something.
It’s not a problem. Just be like usual, then it will be alright. No one will be able to take Teacher away.
[1] 长歌- here, we come across to the origins of Chang Ge’s name. The term itself can be used to describe a song which is played back far and wide, or a lengthy poem (that would talk about the many various deeds one has done).
[2] 本命法宝- a common concept in (weapon type) cultivation novels in which one would take their favourite weapon of choice and ‘tie’ it to their lives (although they don’t actually die if the weapon is broken, but take on heavy damage)
[3] 百味- literally, a hundred flavours. This is likely a reference on how a human experiences ‘four flavours’ in their lives that correspond to the experiences they will encounter- sweetness (happiness), sour (sadness, misery) , bitter (hardship, pain) and spicy (excitement). Hence, one hundred flavours, one hundred (or many) experiences.
[4] Quick lesson on Chinese opera roles. Qing yi, 青衣, is also the name of a (female) role within a play, characterized not only by their verdant coloured garments, but also their trait of being chaste, faithful. Also called 正旦, but it would obviously be harder to make the connection between the role and Shen Qing Yi the person. In contrast, the hua dan (花旦) is a role more lively, bold, and liberal (or a more stronger word, licentious). Makes you think back to the previous arc and how befitting Shen Qing Yi is in playing a role of a qing yi.
