Chapter 1

Why did it come to this?

While looking at the bandits in front of me—no, the members of the knight squadron—I thought to myself.

This place is deep in the forest. There, I had been hunting monsters non-stop. This was the mission of our Enoch Second Expeditionary Unit.

"Alright, how many have we killed now?"

The captain asked the deputy captain, Berrie.

"Captain Roodtink has killed twenty, I've killed seven, Gar has eleven, and Urgas has five."

"At this rate, we'll be done by tomorrow. Hey, wild rabbit, keep track of the numbers."

The bearded, stern-looking giant man gave me an order. He is the leader of the bandits... no, the captain of the Enoch Second Expeditionary Unit.

With a heavy sigh, I wrote down the number of monsters killed in my notebook.

"Wild rabbit, you're really slacking off."

"My name is not wild rabbit, it's Mel. My family name is Lisris."

"Whatever, you're a wild rabbit."

Saying that, Captain Roodtink flicked my long ears with his fingertips.

"Ouch! Stop it!"

Seeing me resist, he laughed heartily.

I wanted to yell, "What the hell is this perverted bandit doing!" but I held back because he is my superior.

Still, I think he is an insensitive man. I had heard that the long, pointed ears, a characteristic of Forest Elves, are highly sensitive.

They are not there for mischief but have evolved to help us live in the forest, allowing us to detect the presence of animals and monsters and distinguish distant sounds.

"Long ears are proof of being a rabbit."

"That's not true! I am a Forest Elf!"

I glared at him, but he was completely unfazed. I was so frustrated.

Captain Roodtink patted my head and turned away.

Someday, I will get my revenge. My heart was burning with determination.

Why is a Forest Elf, who lives in a village deep in the forest, part of the knight squadron? It's because my family is a large one and, moreover, very poor.

Just the other day, I was told to break off my engagement with the person I was supposed to marry, which was arranged to strengthen the ties between our families.

The reason was our family's abject poverty and my lack of beauty and magical power.

Indeed, I am not particularly attractive among the Forest Elves, who are called "beautiful forest fairies," and my magical power is virtually non-existent. Moreover, I am not good at hunting.

While hunting large game like boars is generally a man's job, women are expected to catch small prey like rabbits and birds. I often returned with my basket full of herbs instead of game, even after spending the whole day hunting.

Given these circumstances, it was no surprise that no one wanted to marry me, a poor, unattractive, and powerless Forest Elf. It was utterly disheartening.

Fortunately, my younger sisters were cute. Maybe it's just a biased view of a family member, but they were.

They were also good at hunting and had high magical power. So, I wanted to do something to help with our poverty. That's why I came to the capital to work.

I thought I would easily find a job in cooking, washing, and cleaning, but it turned out to be a tough battle.

Apparently, noble households with high salaries do not hire anyone without a recommendation. I didn't know that.

Even when I applied for jobs in restaurants, I was turned down as soon as they saw my pointed ears.

A kind old lady told me that elves are known to have high self-esteem and are difficult to handle as workers.

That's not true.

Most elves don't come down to human settlements. Those who do are probably oddballs.

I resent the ancestors who gave elves a bad reputation.

The kind old lady introduced me to a job that suited me. It was the Enoch Kingdom Knight Squadron.

They accept any race and give equal work. Moreover, the pay is high.

I eagerly went to the interview and the test.

Since I am good at calculations, I believed I would be assigned to an administrative department.

However, I was assigned to the Enoch Second Expeditionary Unit, a team with only four members.

My unfortunate position was that of a medic. Despite being a Forest Elf, I desperately argued that I couldn't use healing magic, but just mentioning that I had some knowledge of herbs got me assigned to this terrible unit.

The expeditionary unit is dispatched to various places to hunt monsters and provide disaster relief.

When I realized that the job required long hours on horseback, I almost fainted.

I was not good at riding horses.

Moreover, I was surprised by the people in my unit.

Captain Crow Roodtink, a towering figure with a thick gray beard covering his face and glowing purple eyes, looked like the leader of a bandit gang. He carried an enormous sword on his back, and he didn't look like a knight at all. If he introduced himself as a bandit, I would have believed him.

Deputy Captain Berrie was a young woman with short black hair and blue eyes, a slender swordsman. She was very kind to me when I first arrived in the capital.

Urgas, a young man around my age, was friendly and reminded me of a dog I used to have.

Finally, Gar, a wolf-like beastman of unknown age, was taciturn and larger than the bandit captain. His red fur was beautiful, and he reminded me of a dog from my family.

Without any explanation of the job, I was taken on an expedition with this group.

Today's mission was to hunt a large number of monsters in a forest not far from the capital.

I was ordered to mount a horse with my luggage and was given a large, new helmet that was too big for my head.

"During the battle, wear this and tremble on the side, wild rabbit."

"Huh!?"

The bandit captain pointed at my long, pointed ears and called me a wild rabbit.

I was determined not to let him get away with it.

I was not only surprised by the bandit-like appearance of the group.

The bandit captain, wielding a greatsword, was incredibly strong, cutting monsters in half with a single stroke.

Deputy Captain Berrie, a dual swordsman, moved like a dancer, slicing through the necks of monsters with precision.

Urgas, the young knight, took advantage of the openings to shoot arrows that pierced the heads of monsters.

Gar, the wolf beastman, skewered monsters with each strike. Despite his large size, he moved surprisingly quickly.

They were undoubtedly a small but elite team of skilled knights.

However, after the battle, they looked like bandits, covered in blood.

I wished they would act more knightly, perhaps making the sign of the cross before the corpses.

Instead, I offered my prayers to the gods.

"Hey, wild rabbit, don't dawdle."

The bandit leader called out, and I responded loudly.

That's how I worked with this group of bandits—no, the Enoch Second Expeditionary Unit.

In the end, the monster hunting continued until evening.

Since night travel was considered dangerous, we would camp out today.

I had never camped before.

I gathered firewood and started a fire.

I couldn't eat lunch because I had seen too many monster corpses. My stomach was growling, so I hoped I could eat dinner.

"Here, Medic Lisris."

"Ah, thank you."

Deputy Captain Berrie gave me bread and dried meat, along with a leather bag of water.

I offered my prayers to the gods and began to eat.

First, the dried meat.
