The dirt road was unusually sticky due to the rain that had fallen the previous day. Late at night, a man wearing a black cloak, who was walking on a familiar path relying on the bright moonlight, stepped on the doorstep of the mansion, leaving a muddy trail of walkers.
There was a young child with blond hair in his arms. A four-year-old child with a large cloak around his body without wearing proper clothes.
Bruce, the butler of Count Barker, who was looking around the mansion with a lantern, ran out quickly when he found the man. The butler recognized the man even though he was wrapped in a black robe.
The young master of the Barker family, ‘Terrence Barker’.
“Master! I was worried! Where have you been all this time and now you’re here!”
“…….”
Terrence didn’t say anything.
It was ten days ago that he left the mansion.
Ten days ago, he headed to Etleton, where the land of the Baron is located, to attend the succession ceremony of the minor baron ‘Roberto’, that he was acquainted with.
A day of celebration and historicity. As soon as Roberto was crowned Baron, a mysterious attack killed Roberto, his parents, and his sister.
So, the Baron family disappeared in vain.
And now, ten days later, Terrence, whom they have not heard from for a long time, has returned to his house. With a little child in his arms.
“That child…? Please come in first. You should go in first and report to the Count that you are back.”
Bruce hurried him inside. Whatever happened for those ten days, his face was as terrible as a bum in a slum. He didn’t give a comment about it in front of him, and there was no bad odor.
“But… who is that kid?”
It was not until Terrence entered the mansion and took off his robe that Bruce asked about the child. The little child in his arms was asleep in oblivion.
Fair skin with rosy cheeks and glossy blond hair. At a glance, it must have been a precious young lady of any house.
“Who is the child? The one that the young master brought…….”
“… ‘Rachel Palmer.’”
“…What?”
His voice cracked. Bruce asked again, as if he had misheard.
“That’s… What…….”
“…I am tired so I want to rest now.”
The man held the child and stepped on the stairs towards the second floor where his room was. He headed to his room with the child, leaving a message to the servant who bowed his head toward him to serve warm water.
Rachel Palmer, a four year old child. That’s how the child came to live with the Barker family.
Three days later, Rachel still wouldn’t wake up. Nevertheless, Terrence settled the child on the bed in his room and took care of her with utmost care.
Since she couldn’t chew the food over, he would hand over soft rice to her throat, and when she sweated, he would wipe her body with a towel soaked in lukewarm water.
The employees of the Barker family were confused. Why would the young master bring a girl he doesn’t know and take care of her with all his heart?
The question soon faded away.
The young master is always a sweet person, so they thought he picked up a poor child from somewhere.
One time, an employee went in to clean up his room, and when she saw Razzle, who was lying in the middle of the bed, she clicked her tongue and pinched the cheeks of the child.
“Tsk, I don’t know where this kid came from, but my young master is suffering because of you.”
At that time, a familiar but strange voice was heard from behind.
“…What are you doing?”
It was a voice that was pleasant to the ear. The voice felt like the sound of an animal that was about to bite the back of her neck right away. Unfortunately, Terrence, who was entering the room, caught her straight away.
Terrence pulled out the sword he was wearing around his waist and aimed it at the employee’s neck without hesitation.
“You must have gone mad that you really wanted to die. You dare put your hand on someone’s body.”
“Y-young master……!”
“Do you think no one will know because no one is watching?”
Terrence scanned his quiet room.
“If I cut your throat in a place where no one sees you, no one will know about it… It might not be a bad idea.”
The employee’s face turned white when he looked down with a terrifying look. When he gestured outside the open door, the employee crawled out of the room on all fous, shaking as if she had been waiting for it.
The rumor spread quickly inside the mansion.
“The young master tried to kill one of the employees, right?”
“Oh, my God, that sweet young master!”
“I heard you tried to bully a young child, so wouldn’t it be natural?”
“But that’s right, he pulled out his sword! …Ack, sir!”
“What are you doing here? Go back to work!”
People’s opinions were divided in half, but everyone seemed to have no idea that he would do things like that.
Since then, when passing by his room, the employees have raised their tiptoes and walked carefully so that they do not even make a sound of footsteps. unwilling to even go near it.
This kind of talk went around, that if you pass by the young master’s room at 9 p.m., he is reading a novel aloud.
What on earth is that kid? Why is the young master so fond of the child?
Due to rumors that were growing out of control, the Count, Zairo, eventually summoned Terrence. His face was covered with fatigue. He seemed very disappointed that his son, who had never had any trouble, was the topic of the rumor that made the mansion cluttered.
“Should a man who will become the next Count not manage even one of the employees properly? It’s very disappointing for me as a father and for the Barker family.”
After much consideration, Terrence brought another person. A middle-aged woman whose hair is just starting to turn gray.
That’s how ‘Ena Obern’ came to Barker Street.
Ena, dressed fresh from the countryside, came to the mansion with a very confused expression, clutching the letter Terrence sent.
Terrence served her with great care. The moment she was taken to her room, the employees noticed that she was the girl’s nanny.
He shut the door.
Terrence pointed to the bed to Ena, and she approached the child with trembling legs.
“Oh, my God… Aahh…!”
Ena, whose legs became weak, managed to crawl on all fours to get to the bed.
The woman’s lips trembled as soon as she saw the child’s face. She carefully wrapped the child’s cheek in a thrilled manner.
Her small, shabby shoulders trembled ceaselessly.
He could tell from behind. It was obvious that she was crying now.
“Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Thank you…. Oh, my God….”
The woman held Rachel in her arms and cried continuously.
After that, Ena took good care of Rachel. Although she hasn’t opened her eyes yet, she did her best as a nanny.
After Ena entered the mansion, Terrence began his management class in earnest to succeed the Count. His mind became impatient. He had to become a Count as soon as possible. That way, he will be able to protect his people more perfectly.
He didn’t want to repeat the same mistake again.
“Terrence, you go out as a representative. That way, your prestige will be higher.”
It was the outbreak of the Imperial War.
It would take months at the shortest and years at the longest to return home after the war. In the meantime, he can’t see Razzle.
“…I’ll leave.”
However, there was no other shortcut like this on the way to being the Count.
In front of the Count’s house, there were many knights flying the flag of the empire. Terrence made his final remarks to Celia, his mother and the Countess, and to Zairo, his father and the Count, on a black horse that resembled the color of his hair.
With the dozens of employees behind them, Ena was holding Razzle among them.
Terrence nodded toward Ena. Ena, who didn’t know the meaning, also held Razzle and nodded with a determined expression.
Razzle was still asleep. He looked at Rachel helplessly in Ena’s arms with bitter eyes.
‘It’s already been more than ten days……. in the end… I still can’t see your eyes and leave like this. Razzle…’
Did heaven respond to Terrence’s desperation? At that moment, Razzle, who was in Ena’s arms, wriggled. Ena looked down at Razzle with surprised eyes at the movement felt in her arms. Terrence also looked at the two with his eyes wide open and breathless.
“Uhh…”
Rachel’s eyelids trembled and her clear green eyes were revealed.
Terrence immediately jumped off his black horse.
The knights and employees who did not know the situation were puzzled by his actions.
Zairo and Celia also seemed embarrassed by the way he strode between them.
“Terrence! What are you doing?”
“Wait, wait… Wait a minute, Father.”
Terrence, who was walking with blank eyes staring at Razzle, stopped in front of Ena. Terrance’s eyes reddened with tears as he blinked to see clearly.
Rachel’s fresh green eyes stopped at Terrence’s black hair. The long, rich gold eyelashes like a doll blinked slowly.
“Rachel…”
Terrence brought Rachel, who was in Ena’s arms, into his arms and hugged her as hard as she could, burying her face. His hands and voice trembled.
“Ah… Rachel…….”
The mysterious man embracing him puzzled Rachel. Nevertheless, he knew he was crying in his arms, so she patted his black hair with a small hand like it was a fern. Pat- pat-
The man burst out laughing at Rachel’s little consolation. As he looked up at Rachel, the embarrassed Razzle looked away with her green eyes, munching on her red and small lips, and smiled at him.
“Thank you… Thank you……. I’m so glad I could see your eyes before I go, Rachel.”
How much he wanted to see those eyes.
She didn’t understand what he meant, but he laughed at her anyway, so it would mean a good thing.
Terrence had a hard time getting Razle out of his arms. But it was time to go. He took Rachel back in Ena’s arms and turned around and climbed on his horse.
He looked one last time at Rachel and marched around.
The soft and hot warmth of the child that he felt in his arms still seemed to remain.
He wanted to hug Rachel again before the warmth disappeared.
***
Rachel was particularly timid. She always held onto Ena’s skirt.
The toddling blonde white child was like a well-made ceramic doll. The employees, who looked at the child curiously for the first time, quickly opened their hearts to Rachel.
The bulging cheeks swelled to the point where they thought it would burst when she would put a lot of snacks in her mouth, and when she was curious, her big eyes sparkled like green leaves under the sunlight. She didn’t know how lovely she was to have those white and soft rosy cheeks when she held a candy in her hand.
In particular, Rachel liked Ena to read books. She also liked to look at Ena, who slowly read a fairy tale in a low voice. In this spacious mansion, Ena was the only guardian, nanny, and large tree-like creature for Rachel.
Rachel also liked to talk to Celia, the Countess.
“Today I saw a butterfly flying in the garden and sitting on a flower.”
“I see – The butterfly must have been really beautiful.”
Celia looked pleased at Rachel, who was moving her small lips, wiggling her hands. Celia, who had only her son Terrence, looked at Rachel and thought, ‘Would she have been this lovely if she had a daughter?’
The soft blond hair fluttered like a wave when she ran around the garden. If there was a golden lake that reflected the sunlight and sparkled, she thought it would be as beautiful as Rachel’s hair.
That’s how lovely Rachel was.
After putting Rachel to sleep, Ena went into a room right next to her and wrote on a parchment.
She stamped black ink on the white quilt pen and left what happened today in writing.
After a week’s worth of records were collected, it was folded finely, placed in a letter envelope, and sent to Terrence on the battlefield.
14 July 421.
She had a very good lunch today. The chef was happy to see her eat all the vegetables without being picky.
After eating, lemon tart was served as a snack. Lemon tart, which you often eat, must be difficult for a young lady because it’s sour. Eventually, she removed all the fillings inside and ate only the tart.
In the evening, the lady went up to bed with a book. She hasn’t learned to read yet, so she made a story by pointing out the illustrations in the book one by one with her small finger.
She was reading the book for about thirty minutes and just fell asleep. She’d been well again today.
For Terrence, the letter was like a ray of light reflected in a rough battlefield.
Throughout the day, he continued to smell the blood without letting go of the tension, day and night, and wielding a cold and sharp knife.
His mind could have been exhausted, but his heart quickly warmed up when he saw the letter from Ena.
Rumors began to circulate among the knights and young masters, who fought as aristocratic representatives, that he had begun dating.
As he kept the letter he received in his arms all day long, it was enough for anyone to misunderstand.
“Sir Terrence, are you in a relationship or something? From which family are you so happy about?”
When asked, Terrence simply smiled at the corner of his mouth and did not answer. It’s a frustrating situation for his fellow soldiers.
Between them, whether you are a noble or a commoner, everyone can freely speak with each other. All sorts of scandals began to circulate.
Terrence didn’t know about it either. His right-hand man, Dekirne, had secretly spread these words.
But he did not bother to explain. He just let the rumors spread. Only Dekirne’s insides were burning.
Terrence’s mother, Celia, was particularly fond of Rachel. At the end of lunch time, she called Rachel and had a tea time together in the middle of the garden full of flowers.
Rachel was still young, so she usually enjoyed eating warm milk and cookies instead of tea.
“What does the lady drink?”
“This is called tea.”
When the teacup with red water was contained in a teacup with pretty flowers, Rachel looked at the black tea across her with sparkling eyes.
There was no way she couldn’t understand the eyes of Rachel looking at it while stomping her feet.
She wanted to give it to her if she wanted, but the young Rachel cannot drink it yet. Celia, who was agonizing, gestured to the maid standing next to her.
“Hey, can you come over here?”
“Yes, madam.”
“In the future tea time, I’ll have the same milk as Rachel.”
“Yes?”
Celia then drank warm milk with Rachel. It wasn’t much to give up the tea when she could be with Rachel.
“Rachel, have you tried the macarons?”
“No, I’ve never tried it.”
Rachel’s soft cheeks shook slightly with the head that was moving from side to side.
“Try it, Rachel, you’ll like it… I asked for a special favor that I think you would like.”
Celia handed Rachel a pink macaron at the top of the three-story afternoon tea tray.
“Wow… It’s like a jewel!”
The round and shiny macarons were perfect for catching Razzle’s eyes. When she opened her small mouth wide and put it in one bite, the fresh raspberry scent and sweet chocolate filling filled her mouth.
“It’s good! It’s weally dewicious!” (T/N: Her mouth was full while talking so the words are not clear.)
“Hoo, I knew you’d like it.”
Hi! I’m finally back to translating sorry for stopping the other webnovels because I became busy with studies. This is a short R19 novel with 8 chapters. I’m not sure if there will be a lot of sexy scenes but the comments said it was such a warm story (despite the age gap lol).
I decided to cut the chapters into three parts because one chapter is too long (28 pages when I translated the whole chapter)
