Chapter 35

With more people gathering in front of the statue of the goddess, we left the area as if to make way for them.
The red brick warehouse—rather, the slave merchant's office—was just a stone's throw away.
Carrot and I entered the slave merchant's office together.
"Welcome, oh, Carrot... Are you done already?"
The one who spoke was a woman in her forties, wearing a long skirt and long hair, exuding a seductive aura. She was smoking something that resembled a kiseru. Unlike regular cigarettes, it had a very sweet smell, but I didn't seem to like that scent.
"We're back, Madame Quince."
"Who is that person?"
"They helped us when the adventurers we had contracted with were about to die."
"...I see. Carrot, go back to your room. I'll handle them."
Carrot left as Quince instructed, and the farewell was rather indifferent.
Well, I just helped her on my own, so it's probably not right to expect thanks.
"Sorry, that girl has lost all hope of living."
Quince said, exhaling smoke. Lost all hope of living. I remembered that she had asked me to kill her.
"It's the fourth group, the adventurers who went out with her and were all wiped out. Even if they weren't all wiped out, the number of deaths would be in the double digits."
"...What do you mean?"
"She has a unique class."
"Unique class?"
Hearing the unfamiliar name, I tilted my head, and Hal explained.
A unique class is a class that a person is born with.
"Famous examples include heroes, demons, royalty, and nobility. As the saying goes, 'Nobility is a birthright,' and no matter how hard we commoners try, we can never become nobles. There are also a few classes that only specific people can attain, regardless of their level, whether it's innate or acquired. And a unique class cannot easily change to another class and has unique skills that can only be used within that class."
"So that's what a unique class is..."
A class that only specific people can attain. Come to think of it, among the divine blessings offered by the goddess—Koshomare-sama—there was one that allowed me to become a hero.
"Seducer... that's the girl's class."
"Seducer? It seems like a class that has nothing to do with Carrot."
"At night, or in places where the sun doesn't reach, she releases a specific pheromone from her body that attracts monsters. That's what the class is about. When she was 14, her unique class suddenly appeared and became fixed to her."
"Fixed?"
Again, I repeated the unfamiliar word. I felt bad for interrupting her explanation.
"It means she can't change classes at a normal temple. Some classes can only be changed by someone of a higher rank than a bishop."
I understood from Hal's explanation.
"At night, or in places where the sun doesn't reach, like a dungeon. Once she enters, she attracts all the monsters around her... However, the monsters attracted by her never attack her. That's the amazing part of being a Seducer. According to literature, if a Seducer harms a monster they've lured, the hypnotic state is broken, and even the Seducer can be attacked."
"So, those adventurers buried Carrot in the ground to lure the monsters..."
"Yeah, apparently there was a high-priced request for brown bear fur. Since brown bears rarely appear in areas with people during this season, they must have tried to use her power... Even when buried in the ground, the pheromones still leak out through the air holes."
Quince stood up and said,
"Because of that power, she has to sleep in a room where no air can escape at night, which is quite troublesome, but even so, there's a high demand for her as a rental. She's very useful if used correctly. Thanks to you bringing her back, she doesn't seem to be injured, so here's a thank you."
Saying that, Quince took out a small bag that likely contained coins.
"...Thank you..."
I took the money from the small bag and bowed. I didn't help her for the money, but I thought this was Quince's pure gratitude.
Then, we left the merchant's office.
"Master—maybe with Master's power..."
"...Maybe I can change Carrot's class... But—"
I glanced at a man passing by.
[Builder: Lv17]
I wished to change that man's class to a commoner. But—his class didn't change. I had tried this before, and I could only change the classes of my companions. Therefore, I couldn't secretly change other people's classes.
There was a way to change Carrot's class by renting her. But, what would happen if I did that?
There was a high possibility that my class-changing skill would be known to Quince. If that were the case, the only way to change Carrot's class without anyone else knowing would be to adopt her.
That wouldn't be a bad thing. It would solve Carrot's problems. But, if the same thing happened again, would I keep buying slaves? And would I have to tell everyone my secret?
I was afraid of that.
"...Besides, I don't have the means to adopt Carrot. Let's go to the adventurer's guild."
"Yeah, brown bear fur should sell for a good price right now."
Hal didn't ask any more about Carrot's class and followed me.
I don't have any money.
I need to earn some.
