Chapter 10

Without counting the tail, the large rat was half the length of an adult's palm, now firmly clamped in the jaws of a long-handled tongs.
The reinforced long-handled tongs, with anti-slip and anti-drop features, had a strong grip. The large rat struggled fiercely after being clamped but couldn't break free, only managing to squeal loudly.
Feng Yi wasn't in a hurry to leave in his car. He walked over to the property management office with the rat still clamped.
The property management was responsible for handling rats caught by residents, whether dead or alive, to prevent the spread of bacteria and viruses that could cause greater harm.
Not far from Feng Yi's parking spot, a person in a parked car stared with wide eyes, his jaw almost hitting the ground. He whispered, "Holy crap!"
He took out his phone and sent a voice message: "Honey, let me tell you, there's a real pro in our neighborhood! Just now, I saw him walking around his car with a long-handled tongs, and then he suddenly stomped and made a move! Whoosh! A rat was caught!"
"It was just like... like that... yeah, like when snakes hunt rats in the animal world, lightning-fast, whoosh! It was caught! It gave me goosebumps!"
"I've never seen anyone act so smoothly, even better than the professionals from the pest control companies mentioned in the group!!"
"What's this called? A master's skill! Effortless, easy, and a one-hit kill!"
While excitedly sending voice messages, he mimicked Feng Yi's move with his hand.
"It's a shame I didn't take a video. Otherwise, I could show you how that fat rat struggled in the tongs! So satisfying!!"
The phone quickly received a reply: "What are you waiting for! Go ask him for help! The pest control company's queue is who knows how long. It's rare to have such a person in our neighborhood, go ask him to help!"
This reminder brought him back to his senses from his excitement. He hurriedly got out of the car and ran after Feng Yi.
At this time, there weren't many people at the property management office.
A young female staff member was on duty. Seeing Feng Yi walk over from the garage entrance with a rat clamped in his long-handled tongs, her face turned pale. She quickly ran over, took out a mouse bag, and opened it.
"Throw it in here!"
After Feng Yi threw the rat into the bag, the young staff member skillfully tied it up. Without looking at the struggling rat in the bag, she nervously asked Feng Yi, "Did you catch it in the garage?"
"Yes. It was under my car," Feng Yi replied.
The young staff member became even more nervous, "Are you in a hurry to leave? We'll send someone to check your car to see if there's any damage to the wiring!"
What scared her wasn't the large rat. If she was really afraid of rats, she wouldn't have taken this job. She was worried about the residents' cars!
With so much management fee collected every month for the garage, if something happened, the residents would definitely think they were just taking money without doing their job, and then complaints, reports, and calls to the mayor's hotline would follow.
The property management office received a message yesterday that a car in another neighborhood had its wiring chewed by rats, causing a breakdown halfway through a drive. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but it was a close call. So, the community notified all property management offices to handle rat control in the garages.
They had thoroughly cleaned the garage yesterday, set up barriers at the entrances and exits, checked all the pipes and vents, and the garage surveillance was working continuously. They didn't expect another rat to hide under a car after just one night!
If one appeared, there might be more. They needed to conduct another inspection. With the recent increase in rat activity, they needed to prevent any unnecessary accidents.
So, she was nervous!
If something happened, the property management would be held responsible!
"I'm not in a hurry to leave," Feng Yi said.
"Alright, please wait a moment!" The staff member said and made a call.
The property management office quickly sent someone to check Feng Yi's car.
"There are bite marks, but they're not severe. There are also some food residues; the rat was hiding food here," one person said.
When the property management cleaned the garage yesterday, they only cleaned the ground under the cars. Without the owners' consent, they couldn't thoroughly check under every car, or people might think they were up to something.
While the property management checked the car, Feng Yi waited nearby. The long-handled tongs were cleaned and disinfected by the property management and then put back in the trunk.
While waiting, a slightly overweight figure suddenly appeared beside him.
"Hey, hello! I'm a resident of Building 5, my surname is Hu. I saw you catch that rat just now! Amazing! Are you a professional?" the person asked.
"No," Feng Yi replied.
"Ah, I see. Then... can you help me? Rats have entered my house, but I can't catch them!"
"The property management tried once, but they came back. Now, they don't have the manpower, and the pest control company is fully booked! My family, including the elderly and children, have been staying away for a few days. My wife and I are being driven crazy by the rats, unable to catch them, and we're almost suffering from insomnia. Can you help me?"
Feng Yi felt a bit taken aback: "I'm not very professional, so I might not be able to help."
"No problem! You're much better than me! I can't find anyone to help. When you're free, can you come to my place and take a look?"
"I've never done this before. The last time rats entered my house, I lured them out with an egg," Feng Yi said.
"You didn't have the tools last time! Your move just now was as good as any professional!"
Saying this, the person clasped his hands together and bowed: "Please help me!"
Seeing his manner and tone, Feng Yi knew that his persistence was unmatched. If he refused, the person might even cry in front of him.
Thinking that he had nothing major to do today, he could go and check, and also verify a certain suspicion. So, Feng Yi didn't refuse.
"I can come and take a look, but I can't guarantee I can solve the problem," Feng Yi said.
"Thank you, thank you! You're a lifesaver! When are you free? I'm Hu Yi, 2102 in Building 5. Should we exchange contact information?"
"I'm 3002 in Building 1, and I'm also in the residents' group," Feng Yi said.
"Great! We're both on the second floor, what a coincidence!"
Feng Yi: "I'll be going out for a while. After dinner, I'll have time. Is it convenient for you?"
"Very convenient! I won't go anywhere after dinner; I'll wait at home!" He clasped his hands together again to show his gratitude.
While they were talking, Feng Yi's car was checked.
"Nothing serious, just some bite marks. There are also some food residues; the rat was hiding food here," the property management said.
"There's nothing to worry about. We'll conduct another cleaning in the garage later. We've also notified the residents' group, so car owners can check their cars or contact us."
With nothing else to do, Feng Yi left and drove to the supermarket to buy some daily necessities, as well as some rice, flour, oil, and other essentials.
Dumplings, beef, eggs, fruits, and vegetables, and two packs of pancakes.
After leaving the supermarket, he went to the pharmacy next door to buy a box of masks as a backup.
He bought a lot, but Feng Yi knew he really needed it.
His constitution had changed.
Just like in the garage, he had used a long-handled tongs to catch rats before, but it was never so easy and quick.
It seemed he had gained some new perception abilities.
In the past, he wouldn't have noticed a rat under his car, nor would he have acted so quickly and accurately.
During this shopping trip, Feng Yi could also perceive the movements in small, hard-to-notice corners.
The supermarket and pharmacy were relatively clean, clearly having been thoroughly cleaned and regularly pest-controlled. Other places were different.
Tonight, he would go to the resident's house in Building 5 to see how far his perception abilities had developed and how wide the range was.
At home, he hadn't paid attention to it. If the rat under the car hadn't been so close, he wouldn't have noticed this new ability.
Back home, Feng Yi took the long-handled tongs from the trunk and put it in a narrow box to avoid attracting attention when he went out.
After dinner, it was dark.
Most households were in their post-dinner activity time.
Feng Yi arrived at 2102 in Building 5, where Mr. Hu and his wife had been waiting for a long time.
"Do you have shoe covers?" Feng Yi asked.
"Oh, no need, no need, just come in!" Hu Yi thought, if he wore shoe covers, he might not be able to catch the rats.
The floor could be mopped, but if the rats weren't caught, they would have to endure for a few more days! Mopping the floor 80 times wouldn't help!
Feng Yi wiped the dust off his shoes on the doormat and walked in.
"Go wherever you think there's a problem, even the bedroom," Hu Yi said.
After returning home, the couple had tidied up the house to make it easier for Feng Yi to move around.
Because they had heard from the residents' group that rats could understand some short phrases after living with humans for a long time, they didn't dare to speak loudly.
Hu Yi watched as Feng Yi walked from the kitchen to the living room and then to the bedroom.
Feng Yi stopped, opened the box, and took out the long-handled tongs.
Seeing this, the couple became nervous.
Hu Yi gave his wife a look: Here it comes! The rat-catching stomp!
He also took out his phone to record.
Feng Yi didn't pay attention to the couple's exchange and walked into one of the rooms.
Hu Yi's wife whispered, "This room is where the elderly live. The rat problem has been going on for a while. A few days ago, the rats chewed through the window screen, scaring the child and keeping everyone awake at night. The elderly and the child have temporarily moved back to their hometown, planning to return after the problem is solved. The door to this room has been closed."
In the couple's original guess, the rats were likely in the kitchen, where there were many pipes, and they could hear movement at night but couldn't catch them. Feng Yi stopping at the elderly's room door was unexpected.
Feng Yi nodded to show he understood and then walked into the room.
"Open the wardrobe door," Feng Yi said.
The couple's faces twitched.
"Is it... inside?"
Hu Yi and his wife were a bit afraid of rats. The recent stories about rats in the groups had made their already small courage even smaller.
Nudged by his wife, Hu Yi took a deep breath and opened the wardrobe door.
There was nothing, only the elderly's neatly hung clothes.
"Open the bottom drawer," Feng Yi said.
Hu Yi, with a stiffened face, pulled the drawer open forcefully.
A figure darted out.
At the same time, there was a scream from the wife.
But the scream didn't last long because she saw the rat, which had just darted out of the drawer and hadn't even landed, was caught by Feng Yi's long-handled tongs.
Hu Yi, regaining his senses, quickly took out the mouse bag he had prepared.
Feng Yi threw the caught rat into the bag.
This rat wasn't as fat as the one in the garage, possibly because it had been trapped in the room and starved.
Hu Yi, now more confident, even felt a sense of revenge and satisfaction!
He looked at Feng Yi as if he were a newly risen savior.
Awesome!
A master!
With such a master around, why look for a pest control company!
