Chapter 19: Ultra-Short Incantation

6 min read1,446 words

In the twilight mansion, the central courtyard.

In this small, circular courtyard surrounding the central tower, Rige, carrying his main weapon, a slender sword, walked out from the mansion and entered here.

Several towers stood side by side around the courtyard, causing the lighting to be less than ideal. Despite the obvious care given to the flowers and plants, which were thriving, the courtyard was still filled with shadows.

This made it seem as though it was still dark even though it was already daytime, leading one to doubt whether it was still night.

Fortunately, the courtyard was equipped with a small fountain and magic stone pillars, which emitted light from the magic stones, making it at least somewhat convenient.

Rige walked through the courtyard, all the way to a corner.

Suddenly, the sound of a blade cutting through the air echoed.

Rige stopped and looked in the direction of the sound.

In the next second, Rige saw the girl he had agreed to meet here.

The golden-haired doll-like girl was holding a bright silver military saber, training.

Her usually calm expression turned cold, and her transparent eyes became extremely sharp. Each time she swung her saber, it cut through the air sharply, creating flashes of silver light at an astonishing speed.

She stood in a corner of the lush green grass, continuously swinging her beloved sword as if there were enemies in front of her, or as if she was afraid of stagnation, performing an intense sword dance alone.

Seeing this, Rige did not interrupt her, nor did he do anything else. He stood quietly, his eyes bright and focused.

He was learning.

Learning Ais's sword techniques and trying to see the trajectory of her swings.

Unfortunately, Ais's sword was too fast, so fast that Rige couldn't keep up with her movements. All he could see were silver streaks dancing in the air, and nothing else.

Even so, Rige did not feel bored. He continued to watch with his eyes wide open, until the sunlight illuminated the entire courtyard.

"——"

Ais finally stopped.

She raised her sword and sheathed it with a "whoosh."

After finishing her training, Ais turned to face Rige.

"Sorry," Ais said, lowering her eyes slightly, with a hint of apology. "I kept you waiting."

"No," Rige shook his head and said calmly, "I should thank Miss Ais for letting me observe your training."

"Is that so?" Ais tilted her head, seemingly not quite understanding, and hesitated, "Was it helpful to you?"

"Of course," Rige paused, then nodded, "After all, as you can see, I, like you, use a sword."

Rige lifted his weapon, bringing it into Ais's view.

"Use a sword?" Ais was somewhat surprised, "You're really not a mage?"

"At least, I'm not a pure support mage," Rige thought for a moment and said, "I prefer to charge into the enemy's ranks and fight rather than stay in the back and use magic."

After all, that would be more exciting.

Rige silently thought to himself.

Ais, on the other hand, recalled Loki's words from yesterday.

"This kid is probably the same type as Ais, always eager to rush into the fray and slaughter monsters."

Thinking of this, Ais's eyes softened slightly when she looked at Rige.

She felt that this newcomer, highly praised by Loki, was very similar to herself in many ways.

Now, he even wanted to learn her magic.

Thinking about this, Ais couldn't help but feel a bit complicated.

"Can I ask you a question?"

Driven by these complex emotions, Ais asked Rige.

"Go ahead."

Rige seemed to have guessed what Ais was about to ask, and his expression didn't change at all.

"Why me?" Ais pondered her words but ultimately asked somewhat awkwardly, "Lefiya is also willing to teach you."

In other words, she was asking why Rige chose her to learn magic when the strongest mage in Orario, Lefiya, was willing to teach him.

"My magic doesn't have the powerful effects or wide range that Lefiya's or Raphi's do."

That's what Ais thought.

Rige also knew that if he wanted to learn powerful magic that fit the general perception of "magic," he should learn from Lefiya.

Her magic was famous for its firepower and could burn enemies of higher levels and even large areas around her.

In comparison, Ais's magic, while special, lacked that decisive power and firepower.

Therefore, under normal circumstances, one would prefer to learn Lefiya's magic.

However, Ais didn't know that Rige had his own plans.

"As I said yesterday, I believe Miss Ais's magic is the most suitable for me at this stage."

Rige looked directly at Ais and explained.

"As is well known, all magic has a common condition: the need to recite a fixed incantation."

Ais nodded in agreement.

Recitation is a necessary step in using magic.

It is the trigger for magic, the switch that activates the supernatural, and has the important effect of stabilizing one's mind, allowing magic to be released more smoothly.

This is true in both the original world and this world.

Therefore, generally speaking, the longer the incantation, the more time it takes to recite, the more powerful and effective the magic.

However, this does not mean that magic with a long incantation is necessarily a good thing.

"Magic with a long incantation is indeed very powerful, but the longer the incantation, the longer it takes to cast, which can cause many problems."

That's what Rige thought.

"Regardless of interruptions or accidents during the casting process, having a long incantation is not good for the growth of one's abilities."

Magic that takes time to cast has many limitations in its use and is rarely used.

If the opportunity to use magic is rare, the growth of one's abilities will not be optimistic.

It's important to frequently use "magic" and other basic abilities like "strength," "endurance," "dexterity," and "agility" to improve them.

If there are no opportunities to use them, it means that the basic ability "magic" will be difficult to improve.

Because of this, many mages go to great lengths to find opportunities to use magic. However, magic is a supernatural force that can cause great destruction with a single strike, making it difficult to use in cities.

Even in the dungeon, facing monster attacks, it's uncertain whether mages can maintain their composure and successfully cast their spells.

Therefore, in the industry, it is generally recognized that improving the basic ability "magic" is much more difficult than other abilities.

However, once this ability is improved, it directly and significantly enhances the power and effects of one's magic.

Rige chose Ais's magic because, in his view, among all the magic in Loki's family, Ais's was the easiest to use.

"If I'm not mistaken, Miss Ais's magic should be of the ultra-short incantation type, right?"

Rige's question was met with Ais's confirmation.

Generally, magic is divided into ultra-short incantation, short incantation, long incantation, and ultra-long incantation.

The longer the incantation, the more powerful the magic, but the less convenient and slower it is to use.

Conversely, the shorter the incantation, the weaker the magic, but the more convenient and faster it is to cast.

Therefore,

"Ultra-short incantation magic is the easiest to use."

Rige stated his purpose.

"I want to learn easy-to-use magic that can be used frequently, so I can improve my 'magic' ability." Rige smiled calmly and continued, "Once 'magic' is improved, the scale and effectiveness of the magic will also increase. When I learn other magic in the future, their power and effects will not be limited by low 'magic' ability, and may even become more powerful due to the improved 'magic' ability."

Therefore, Rige had already decided that his first magic must be of the ultra-short incantation type.

Only by mastering ultra-short incantation magic first can his future magical abilities be guaranteed to grow.

Of course, this would inevitably lead to a problem.

That is, the magic Rige learns will not be very powerful or effective.

However, this problem does not exist with the female swordsman's magic.

Because the only magic Ais possesses, which is classified as ultra-short incantation, is actually of an unconventional type.

Its effects are not weak but are recognized as strong.

How strong?

Strong enough that even though Ais is only level 5, with level 6 and 7 figures above her, she still stands out as the strongest female swordsman in everyone's eyes.

Therefore,

"Can you use your magic?"

Rige made his request.

After a moment of silence, Ais responded.

"Awaken (Tempest)."

The wind began to swirl.
