Prologue
December 31. The Hall of Culture.
Fitting its name, a tall and splendid building modeled after the Temple of Athena in Greece was the gathering place for numerous prominent figures.
It was the day of the highest cultural awards ceremony in South Korea.
Despite the sharp, cold wind blowing from the nearby Han River, the area under the bright lights was bustling with excitement.
The night sky, heavy with dark clouds, was almost invisible due to the dazzling lights.
And the actors entering the Hall of Culture shone just as brightly as those lights.
Directors, writers, producers, and investors who wielded influence over the entire South Korean cultural industry were all present.
No one was unimportant, and the security around the red carpet and the entrance was extremely tight.
Security guards in black suits kept a watchful eye on the fans screaming and the journalists swarming to take photos.
‘Chairman Baek Jeong-han of SG Group has arrived.’
‘Chairman Baek Jeong-han of SG Group has arrived.’
The tension in the security guards' expressions increased at the voice transmitted through their radios.
While protecting actors was one of their duties, guarding VVIPs like these was also a significant responsibility.
Moreover, Chairman Baek Jeong-han of SG Group could be considered the true star of the evening.
SG Group was a leading force in South Korea's cultural industry.
They owned film production companies, drama production companies, and one of the three major broadcasting networks in Korea.
Today's awards ceremony was also hosted and primarily sponsored by SG Group.
A spotless, gleaming black limousine stopped, and Chairman Baek Jeong-han entered through a different entrance from where the actors were entering.
Not only the security guards responsible for the ceremony but also the secretary and two private security guards accompanying the chairman protected him.
However, the chairman, a towering figure over 180cm tall and weighing more than 90kg, was robust enough that he might not have needed protection.
Though it might be a prejudice, his appearance was such that he could have been mistaken for a gangster, making it surprising that he led the 'culture and arts' industry.
Just as Chairman Baek Jeong-han was about to reach the entrance, a single raindrop fell from the sky.
Though only a single drop landed on his furrowed brow, he reacted quickly, furrowing his thick eyebrows.
Chairman Baek Jeong-han looked up at the sky with annoyance.
The secretary quickly opened an umbrella, so the chairman faced the inside of a black umbrella.
Above, unseen by Chairman Baek Jeong-han, on the rooftop of the building, stood his son, Kang Do-joon.
